27. My fiancé

Harry and Louis were playing Ninja Fruit in the living room while I was packing Harry’s suitcase in the bedroom. The time had come for their performance in Madison Square Garden and so the boys were flying to the US tomorrow. But since Harry had a fiancée now, yes, that was me, I couldn’t quite grasp it yet, he thought that he could sit back, relax and do nothing!

Tonight was also the night that Liam went on a date with Danielle. He had told her to meet him at 7. It was 8 now. I kept looking at my watch, thinking about what they might be doing or saying every second of their date. I just didn’t want him to get hurt again. I was putting a few shirts in the suitcase when Louis shouted, ‘Oh, come on! That was so close!’ I rolled my eyes and walked to the living room. I stood in front of them with my arms folded.

‘Baby,’ I began. ‘Don’t you think you should help me pack your things?’

‘Yes, love, of course,’ Harry replied without lifting his head up, totally focused on the game. Really, now? I thought. My phone buzzed in my pocket. It was a text from Liam. I hesitated before opening it.

Liam Cuddly Bear: Danielle didn’t show up. When I called her, she told me it was a mistake saying yes in the first place.

‘I have to go,’ I said, reaching for my coat.

‘NO,’ Harry protested, putting his phone away. He jumped up from the sofa, saying, ‘I’m ready to pack now!’

‘But I have to go,’ I repeated, thinking about Liam. ‘I’ll be back in a while.’

Harry grabbed my wrist. He was suspicious now. ‘Who texted you?’ he asked.

‘Liam,’ Louis replied for me. ‘He texted me, too. Danielle didn’t show up for their dinner.’

Harry sighed. ‘Bess, you can’t go running to him every time he has a problem.’

‘Liam’s a big boy, love,’ Louis said. ‘He can handle it himself.’

But I have to comfort him, I thought. He needs me … I huffed and then ironically asked my fiancé, ‘Am I at least allowed to text him?’

That you’re allowed to do,’ Louis replied for Harry, laughing, but when I shot him a tiny glare, he got up, saying, ‘I’d better go. I’ll call it an early night. Big day tomorrow.’

Harry and Louis talked for a while by the open front door while I texted Liam back. I wrote: I’m sorry … Remember though, what’s meant to be will always find a way.

When Louis left, Harry came up behind me and I hit send before he could read what I had written over my shoulder.

‘Can we go pack now?’ I asked. I was a little angry with him for not letting me go see Liam. But Harry had a mischievous grin on. My eyes widened when I understood what he wanted. I scolded, ‘Harry, no! You have to pack!’

Harry shrugged before he put one arm behind my back, the other under my knees and picked me up. I opened my mouth to complain but he shut me up with a kiss and carried me to the bedroom.

I was sitting with Mina and Sophie on the sofa, watching an interview of the boys on telly. It had been a week since they flew to the US. They were coming back tomorrow night.

‘Honestly, it should be illegal how good these boys look in suits,’ Sophie said, stuffing a handful of popcorn in her mouth. I hugged a cushion, stupidly smiling that one of them was actually mine.

‘Who’s single in One Direction?’ the interviewer asked and the boys all smiled, looking at each other. They were asked this question in almost every interview. Liam and Niall put their hands up. Harry didn’t and he cheekily grinned.

‘Zayn and I have girlfriends,’ Louis replied.

‘What about you, Harry?’ the interviewer asked.

‘I’m engaged, actually,’ Harry announced and I choked on popcorn. We had agreed not to tell anyone, not even our moms, until after he returned to the UK. Every fan in the audience gasped and a dead silence followed.

‘You didn’t expect that, did you?’ Louis joked and the rest of the boys chuckled uncomfortably.

‘Are you serious?’ the TV host asked in disbelief.

‘Yes, I am,’ Harry replied with a big happy smile on his face.

At that, some fans started sobbing while a girl ran away, crying, ‘I don’t want to live on this planet anymore!’

‘You got engaged!?’ Sophie screeched and my eardrum actually hurt.

‘Why didn’t you tell us?’ Mina asked, turning the telly off. I was sitting in the middle and both of them stared at me. I opened my mouth, not really knowing what to say, but the two of them began talking instead.

‘You’re both too young, Bess,’ Mina said, judging.

‘And do you honestly think he won’t cheat?’ Sophie asked, shaking her head.

‘Don’t throw your life away like that,’ Mina completed.

My phone buzzed. Harry was calling me. I got up and answered, going to my room.

How are you, beautiful?’ Harry asked in a raspy voice. He had caught a cold.

I sighed. ‘I miss you.’

Did you watch the interview?’

I was quiet for a moment. ‘I did,’ I replied.

I wanted the whole world to know.’

‘Apparently,’ I said.

Are you angry at me?’

‘I’m not. I miss you so much.’

I miss you, too, beautiful.’ He coughed a few times. ‘I need a cup of tea,’ he groaned, sniffing. ‘Lou, fix me a cup of tea, please,’ he shouted and then coughed louder. ‘I’m ill and I need you,’ he told me before he asked, ‘What color underwear are you wearing?’

I laughed. ‘Red,’ I replied and Harry groaned again but for a different reason this time.

Please come to the airport tomorrow,’ he said. ‘I want to see your face the minute I walk out of the arrivals hall.’

I dreaded all the publicity I was getting myself into but I shoved the thought at the back of my head and said, ‘Okay.’

‘Bess,’ Sophie called, opening the door. ‘You have to see something,’ she said. She looked worried.

‘Baby, I’ll call you right back, okay?’ I told him.

I’ll think of you in your red underwear while I wait,’ Harry said and I was sure he was grinning. I smiled and hung up.

‘What is it?’ I asked, following Sophie in the living room.

‘Keep calm, okay?’ she told me over her shoulder. The balcony door was open and Mina was standing outside. Sophie went there too. I was starting to panic now.

‘We hate you, Bess Boone!’ I heard someone shouting. Oh, that was what was going on, I thought, going to the balcony. Two girls were standing outside the block of flats. They had probably come to protest about what Harry had said in the interview. When the two girls saw me, they looked at each other. ‘Oh my God, that’s her,’ the one said and the other shouted, ‘You don’t deserve him!’

‘I know,’ I shouted back. They were taken aback. These girls only knew my name, they didn’t know me.

‘Well, good,’ one of them retorted. ‘Stay away from him! Harry’s ours!’

I shook my head and went back inside. Mina followed.

‘Stop going after other girls’ boyfriends,’ Sophie shouted at them before she came inside too, closing the balcony door. The two fans kept shouting stuff for a while longer before they finally went away.

‘Don’t listen to them, Bess,’ Mina said. ‘They’re just hurt and jealous.’

‘I know,’ I replied.

‘You totally deserve Harry,’ Sophie added.

Did I though? I forced myself to smile at them before I went in my room. I lied on my side on the bed with my phone next to my face. I stared at it until I fell asleep. I never called Harry back that night.
