19. Jogging and The Call

It had been two weeks since the morning Harry had told me we should take a break and the boys had even flown to Spain and back in the meantime. I had accepted that it was all over with Harry but that didn’t stop Liam and me from talking through texts almost every minute of every day. This boy was turning out to be my best friend really. One morning, Liam convinced me to go jogging with him and I regretted it the minute I started running. I literally only ran for five minutes before I began gasping for breath.

‘Liam, I cannot run anymore,’ I cried desperately with my hands on my knees. ‘It’s physically impossible!’

‘Oh, come on, you lazy girl,’ Liam smiled, leisurely jogging in circles around me. He was wearing a blue t-shirt, a grey pair of shorts and white trainers.

Hey,’ I complained, standing up straight. I pointed my forefinger at him and said, ‘I am not lazy.’ Of course I was but I had to defend myself, right?

‘What’s this then?’ he asked, poking my belly and slapping my butt.

Did he just spank me!? I stared at him, blinking and he half smiled. He was still jogging at the spot. ‘Are you calling me fat?’ I asked and unconsciously pouted. I had a couple of extra pounds and it hurt when a boy, especially if that boy was Liam, pointed it out.

‘No,’ he said, shaking his head back and forth. ‘I actually love your butt,’ he completed and winked.

I blushed and turned away. ‘Well, good,’ I said, looking at the lake. The park where Liam jogged every morning was pretty much empty except for a few others who jogged as well. Liam slapped my butt again and I turned to him, squealing, ‘Liam! Stop that!’

‘Why?’ Liam asked with a wicked smile playing on his lips.

‘Well, for one thing, it’s inappropriate,’ I scolded.

‘What? This?’ he asked and slapped me again.

‘Okay, that’s it, I’m going home and I’m going on a diet,’ I said and turned to leave.

‘No more cupcakes for you then, eh?’ Liam asked, still jogging. I gasped, turning round.

‘Why are you being so mean?’ I cried, hitting him on the shoulder. Liam now stopped and grabbed my wrist. We were very close to each other.

‘It killed me every time Harry held you or kissed you,’ Liam softly confessed and I swallowed hard, facing his neck.

‘What about Danielle?’ I asked, lifting my eyes up to his.

‘She already found a new boyfriend,’ Liam said, shrugging, but I knew that that must have actually stung, a lot.

‘I’m sorry,’ I told him. ‘Since we’re on the subject, how’s Harry?’

‘Harry?’ Liam asked, lifting his eyebrows and looking away from me. He is hiding something, I thought. ‘Harry’s fine,’ he finally replied, shrugging.

I put my hand on his chest and asked, ‘What are you not telling me?’

Liam looked at me, thinking for a moment, before he spilled the beans, ‘Harry hooked up with a fan in Madrid.’

That felt as if an arrow was driven through my heart. ‘Ouch,’ I simply said with my other hand in a fist against my chest. That really hurt.

‘Forget about him, Bess,’ Liam said, stroking my hair. ‘He’s my mate but he was daft enough to let you go.’

No matter what Liam said, the only thing I could think of right now was that Harry had really moved on while I still missed him like hell. My phone buzzed in the pocket of my sweatpants. It was Mike from the record company and he told me he wanted me to go to work at 7 that morning. It was nearly 6 now. I hung up and panicked, ‘I’ll never make it back to my flat to get ready and then go to work.’

‘You can take a bath at my flat,’ Liam suggested.

‘But I have no clothes or shoes or underwear,’ I cried.

‘Don’t worry, love,’ Liam said, taking my hand. ‘Trust me, yeah?’

As we walked out of the park, Liam scrolled through his mobile phone contacts and pressed on a number.

‘Who are you calling?’ I asked.

‘Caroline, our stylist,’ Liam replied and when Caroline answered, he said, ‘Hey, love, I have a favor to ask.’

I took a shower, put on a bathrobe and walked into Liam’s bedroom. On the bed, there were a white shirt, a grey pencil skirt and black underwear, and on the floor, there was a box with a pair of black high heels. I stared at the outfit with my mouth hanging open. Every item was from a different designer brand and Liam must have paid at least a thousand pounds for all of them. I went into the living room. Liam was sitting on an armchair, eating a bowl of cereal. When he saw me, he put the bowl on the coffee table and got up. He ran his eyes all over me, gulped and cleared his throat, probably trying not to think that I was naked underneath the bathrobe.

‘Didn’t you like the clothes?’ he asked worried.

‘They are perfect,’ I said.

‘What’s wrong then?’ he asked, coming closer.

‘Everything’s too expensive, Liam. It’ll take me ages to pay you back.’

Liam took my face in both his hands and said, looking into my eyes, ‘I don’t want you to pay me back. Consider everything as a gift.’

‘I’m sorry but I can’t accept it,’ I insisted.

‘Fine. You want to repay me? Cook me dinner tonight,’ Liam suggested.

‘A dinner will only cost me 10 quid,’ I argued.

‘Cook me dinner every night then until we leave for New York in a week,’ he said.

I chewed my lower lip, looking at him and considering his offer. ‘That sounds fair,’ I said after a moment and extended my hand. ‘Shake on it?’

Liam shook my hand, smiling. ‘We should stop making deals the two of us. We always end up in a lot of trouble when we do,’ he said, still holding my hand.

‘Maybe this one won’t cause us any trouble,’ I said and I knew that was doubtful. ‘Anyway, I should go get dressed.’

‘Oh, God, please do,’ Liam breathed, relieved. ‘You just standing here in the bathrobe … it’s killing me.’

I smiled, grabbed his t-shirt, pulled him to me and kissed him on the cheek. ‘I’ll be right back,’ I said and hurried into the bedroom. I put on the lovely clothes and went back into the living room. Liam was standing where I had left him with a grin on his face.

‘The skirt’s a little tight,’ I said, sucking my belly in. ‘I think I’ll go on a diet as of tomorrow.’

Liam put his hands on my hips and said, ‘Don’t be silly. You’re perfect.’ His phone rang and he answered. ‘It’s Louis,’ he told me and I nodded, gathering my things. I had half an hour to get to work now and I had to hurry. ‘What do you mean Harry’s in the hospital?’ Liam shouted. ‘What happened? Which hospital?’

I froze.

‘Yeah, yeah, I’ll go right away,’ he said and hung up.

‘What happened?’ I asked with a shaky voice.

‘Harry had a car accident,’ Liam replied in disbelief.

My heart was in my throat and I felt sick inside. ‘Is he going to be okay?’

‘I don’t know,’ Liam replied, grabbing his jacket.

‘You don’t know!?’ I squealed a little.

‘He was by himself. The boys are headed to the hospital now.’

‘Can I come?’ I asked.

‘Of course you can come,’ Liam told me and we left the flat.
