4. Harry Styles to the Rescue

At work, I spent two whole hours photocopying stuff for Mike. I hated that guy. I really did. In the meantime, I blocked every thought I had about Liam. What happened between us was unreal. I didn’t expect anything from him and anyway I knew it wouldn’t last.

Bess,’ Mike barked from the hallway. He was standing by his office’s open door. ‘Three cups of tea. My office. Now,’ he ordered gruffly and slammed the door when he went back inside.

‘Wanker,’ I breathed, fixing a tray with what he had asked. I knocked on the door, went inside, and nearly dropped the tray when I saw a smiling Harry and a smirking Louis sitting on the chairs opposite Mike’s desk. How did the two of them sneak in here without causing any mayhem?

‘I’m sorry to interrupt,’ I said timidly and placed a cup of hot tea in front of each man. Mike was serious and was staring at me, as always.

‘Are you done with copying?’ Mike asked and I nodded. ‘Good,’ he said, handing me three massive paper folders. ‘Now, sort this out by noon.’

‘But – ‘ I made to complain, but Mike cut me off.

‘You’ll need a really good recommendation letter if you want an actual job in this company. So, I suggest you do whatever I tell you to do with no complain. Am I clear, love?’ Mike advised, harshly, and I nodded, holding my tongue.

‘I think she deserves to be treated better than this,’ Harry interfered and I froze to the spot.

‘Excuse me?’ Mike asked dangerously calm.

Louis laughed and patted Harry on the back. ‘Harry’s very sensitive with this kind of things,’ Louis said, clearly lying. ‘Wherever we go he makes such a massive deal about how employees must be treated fairly and such. What can you do, yeah? He used to work in a bakery.’

Mike was amused with Louis’ little performance. ‘Bess knows I do what I think is best for her, don’t you, darling?’

Again, I nodded. ‘Can I go now?’ I asked. I was annoyed with Harry and avoided meeting his eyes. Mike told me that I could. Furious, I went to the little kitchen and threw the paper folders on the counter. I reached for the depression pills. I was ready to take the first one.

‘Why do you let him treat you like that?’ Harry demanded from behind me.

I spun round, hiding the pills behind my back. ‘Are you trying to get me kicked out of here?’ I asked him, pretty pissed.

‘He was being a proper prick to you,’ Harry insisted, raising his voice. A vein popped on his neck. I wanted to kiss it.

‘That’s my problem, not yours, Mr. Big Shot!’ I said, immaturely.

‘I wasn’t always famous, you know,’ Harry said, somewhat hurt.

‘I don’t care!’ I shouted for no reason at all. Well, I did care, but anyway.

He looked at me for a moment before he asked, ‘What are you hiding behind your back?’

Shit. ‘Nothing …’

‘Is it a cigarette?’ he asked, trying to peek. ‘Zayn used to smoke and we got him to quit.’

‘I don’t get why you’re doing all this.’

‘Is it a cigarette?’ he insisted.

‘It’s none of your – ‘ I began, but before I could finish the sentence, he had already grabbed the pills. He read the label on the plastic bottle.

He asked, frowning, ‘What are you doing with this?’

‘Give it back,’ I demanded.

‘You don’t need this,’ he said.

‘You don’t know me,’ I cried, holding back tears that stung my eyes.

‘Bess …’ he whispered, moving closer.

‘My dad fucking died,’ I shouted and Harry turned very serious.

‘I’m sorry,’ he said softly and when he tried to hold me, I pushed him back.

‘I don’t need you to save me,’ I said. ‘I just need you to leave me alone!’ Did I fool him? No. He saw right through me.

‘I really am sorry,’ he repeated. He wrapped his arms around me and pulled me against him. I protested, but as he wouldn’t let go, I clutched his white t-shirt, buried my face in his neck, and sobbed like a little girl. He hugged me tighter, breathing into my hair.

‘I knew there was something about you,’ he said. ‘Liam always was a good judge of character.’

I swallowed with difficulty and slowly stepped away from him. I had totally forgotten about Liam and the kiss. Harry’s white t-shirt was now stained with my black mascara and tears.

‘I ruined your t-shirt,’ I said and sniffed. ‘I’m sorry.’

He half smiled and a deep dimple popped on his cheek. He put his big hands on my face and wiped the tears away with his thumbs. ‘You have such a lovely face,’ he said and leaned towards me.

I turned away from him, regretting it immediately. ‘Liam and I kissed,’ I confessed.

Harry dropped his hands to his sides and put them in his jeans’ pockets. ‘He kissed you?’ he asked, calmly.

‘And I kissed him back,’ I replied, feeling like a horrible person all of a sudden.

‘You know you’re just the rebound girl to him, so, why are you doing this to yourself?’ he asked, angry.

‘Because I like him,’ I said, stubbornly.

‘Do you like him more than you like me?’ Harry asked, coming closer again. I looked into his bright green eyes. I couldn’t lie to him.

‘I have to go, I’m sorry, if Mike finds out about this …’ I said, gathering the paper folders. I made to leave, but Harry blocked my way, and he wouldn’t budge.

‘Don’t go,’ he asked and my heart ached to say no to him.

‘That’s really not fair,’ I complained. ‘I’m not a toy. Leave me alone,’ I cried, pushing him aside.

Louis was outside the kitchen and my exit took him by surprise. Was he eavesdropping!?

‘Oh, hey, babe,’ he said, smiling. His hands were crossed across his chest and he was leaning against the wall. Harry came out in the hallway, too.

‘What I have with Liam doesn’t concern you at all,’ I told him, coldly, and having acted like a total ice bitch, I ran off like the coward that I was.
