12. Dressing Room

I stood outside the dressing room Harry was in, waiting for him to try on the shirts he had picked, a white one and a blue one. The sales assistant had thrown herself all over him the minute we had walked in the store and she was now glaring at me, probably thinking what the hell did Harry Styles was doing with a girl like me. When she finally turned away, I moved closer to the dressing room curtain and asked him, ‘Have you tried on anything?’

Harry opened the curtain. He was wearing the white shirt. ‘What do you think?’ he asked with his arms open and looking at me.

He looked pretty much like an angel but of course I didn’t tell him that. ‘You look nice,’ I said, smiling. ‘Won’t you try the blue one, too?’

Harry smirked and before I could react, he got my hand, pulled me inside the dressing room and closed the curtain. He then put his hands on my waist and pushed up against the mirror. I froze. We were in the dressing room of a high profile store, the evil sales assistant was right outside and on top of that I was supposed to be Liam Payne’s new girlfriend. I opened my mouth to go on a little rant but Harry kissed me. At first, I felt as if he was sucking the life from me but then his kiss became really soft and hypnotizing. When he slowly pulled away, I realized that I had forgotten what I wanted to say. His mouth was almost touching my forehead when he said in a deep voice, ‘Help me change.’

I swallowed with difficulty and unbuttoned his shirt while he grabbed my butt. I stared at his torso in appreciation for a moment, chewing on my lower lip.

‘Are the shirts any good, Mr. Styles?’ the sales assistant asked from outside.

‘Yes. Thank you,’ Harry replied, always looking at me and smiling.

‘Do you need any help, maybe?’ she then asked, clearly dying to get inside the dressing room.

‘No, I’m fine,’ Harry said curtly. The sales assistant sighed and went away. ‘Where were we?’ he then asked with a cheeky grin and looking down my blouse.

Almost every girl on the planet wanted to be with him and I sighed, thinking about how long this would actually last for me. I wasn’t the first girl Harry had wooed and I knew I wouldn’t be the last.

‘What are you thinking about?’ Harry asked and I lied, ‘Nothing.’

His phone vibrated in his black jeans’ pocket. He answered. It was Liam. ‘Yeah, mate. I’ll be there in about half an hour,’ he told him and hung up. He looked a little guilty as he put the phone away. ‘I think I’ll buy both shirts,’ he said while putting on his own white t-shirt. Both shirts cost about 200 pounds each but I guess that wasn’t an issue for Harry Styles anymore.

My stomach had turned into a knot. Something was awfully wrong. ‘You’ll look great in both,’ I said.

Harry chuckled and gave me a quick kiss on the forehead. ‘Thank you,’ he said, typically, and walked out of the dressing room. I followed him to the cashier. He paid and we left the store. In the street, a couple of photographers followed us and one of them was pretty rude.

‘What are you doing with your best mate’s gal, Harry?’ he shouted and when Harry ignored him, he went on, ‘Does Liam know you two are just good friends?’

Harry unlocked his car and I climbed inside. He drove away and he was silent for a while. ‘I’ll drop you off at your flat,’ he finally said. He was frowning and was holding the gear stick so tightly that his knuckles were very white.

I touched his hand. ‘Harry, what’s wrong?’ I asked.

‘We’re leaving for the US tonight,’ he said, looking straight ahead.

It took me a minute to process that. ‘Tonight!?’ I asked, squeaking a little.

Harry nodded, still not looking at me. He knew he was in a lot of trouble.

‘Why didn’t you tell me?’ I asked, taking my hand away from his.

‘Last night was really great,’ Harry replied. ‘I didn’t want to ruin it by dropping that on you.’

‘Were you planning on telling me from the plane tonight then?’ I asked, ironically.

‘Bess, come on, it’s no big deal. We’ll be back in a month,’ Harry said. His calm tone only made things worse.

‘In a month!?’ I complained, squeaking again.

Harry parked outside my block of flats and turned to me. ‘The boys are all packing and are waiting for me,’ he said. ‘Come see me before we leave for the airport, okay? I’ll be at Louis’.’

I pouted and crossed my arms across my chest. I didn’t want him to go. I was afraid he’d forget all about me the minute he’d set foot in the US. ‘Fine,’ I finally said and got out of the car when he tried to kiss me.

As Harry drove away, I saw him wiping away a tear. Maybe something had gotten into his eye. I mean, he wouldn’t cry for me, would he?

Louis’ front door was open again but I knocked anyway.

‘Come on in,’ Zayn said from the sofa. He was watching a football match with their bodyguard, Paul. Paul had his big arms folded and his one leg over the other. He was a pretty tough guy.

‘Is this Bess?’ Paul asked Zayn, scanning me head to toe with his eyes. He had to make sure I wasn’t a threat to the boys.

‘Yeah,’ Zayn replied. ‘Hot, isn’t she?’

Paul flashed a little grin and didn’t answer that. He winked at me though before he turned his focus back on the telly. Niall waved at me from the kitchen. He was sitting on a stool, eating a sandwich. He looked lonely and for a moment I wondered what had happened between him and that fan.

‘Hey babe,’ Louis called, appearing from the corridor that led to the bedrooms. ‘Can I talk to you for a moment?’ he asked.

‘Sure,’ I told him.

‘Harry told me what happened between the two of you in his car,’ Louis said. ‘Harry may look calm and cool but he’s always bummed out when he has to go away from the people he loves.’

I didn’t know what to say. Did he mean that I was one of the people Harry actually loved?

‘He’s in my bedroom,’ Louis then said. ‘Go talk to him, yeah?’

I nodded and went into the bedroom. Liam was there too. The two boys were sitting on the bed, talking and laughing about something. When Harry saw me, he turned serious.

‘I am suddenly very thirsty,’ Liam said, getting up. I smiled at him but Harry still had a grave look on his face. ‘Okay then,’ Liam said and left.

I sat on the bed next to Harry and stared at my knees when I told him, ‘I’m sorry about before.’

Harry was silent for a moment before he said, ‘I don’t want you to see anybody else while I’m gone. And I’ll need to talk to you every night until I come back.’ He then looked at me from under furrowed eyebrows and with his lips pursed. I couldn’t help it but put my hands on his neck and kiss him. Harry gently grabbed a fistful of my hair with his one hand and trailed his fingertips down my spine with his other. I shivered and gasped a little.

‘It’s time to go, Haz,’ Zayn shouted from the living room.

Harry sighed. He took my hand and kissed it and I tried not to sob. It was so hard saying goodbye to him. ‘I’ll talk to you tomorrow night then, yeah?’ he asked and I nodded, simply hoping that he wouldn’t find someone to replace me within his first five minutes in the US.
