26. Cabin in the Woods 2

Harry closed the door while I stared at the room. He had spread red rose petals all over the bed and floor. I had told him once that I loved red roses. They were my favorite flowers.

‘Do you like it?’ Harry asked, looking at me. He had a playful smile on and his dimples were showing off.

‘I love it,’ I breathed before I ran and jumped on the bed. I lied on my back, closed my eyes and took a deep breath, taking in the lovely scent. I heard Harry chuckle. He climbed on the bed.

‘Don’t open your eyes yet,’ Harry told me, his warm breath caressing my face. I giggled, biting my lower lip. He slipped his hand inside my top and ran his fingers from my stomach down to the beginning of my jeans. I quivered under his touch and when he gently kissed my bellybutton, I quietly moaned, curling my toes.

‘You’re being romantic again,’ I told him, feeling unbelievably happy.

‘Yes,’ Harry replied. ‘But I’m also proposing this time.’

My eyes flew open. He was kneeling next to me and I quickly kneeled too.

‘Bess …’ Harry began but paused. He was nervous. He cleared his throat and opened his mouth to go on.

I shook my head back and forth, thinking: Don’t say it, please, don’t say it … I wasn’t ready for this.

‘Bess,’ Harry said again, taking both my hands and staring right into my eyes. ‘Will you marry me?’

‘I-I …’ I stuttered, blinking. Harry was looking at me, patiently waiting for my answer. What was I supposed to say!? YES, I loved him, of course I loved him, more than I should, too, but I only knew him two months and I was only twenty. ‘I really need a smoke,’ I said, trying to get away.

‘Marry me, Bess,’ Harry begged, not letting me go. ‘Be my wife.’

‘Harry …’ I cried but said nothing more. I could never hurt him. Besides, I didn’t want to say no. ‘But we’re too young,’ I said after a while, trying to be the voice of reason.

Harry grabbed my face. Apparently, he wouldn’t take no for an answer. ‘I don’t care,’ he simply said. ‘I was attracted to you from the moment I first saw you and when I got to know you, I fell in love. I want to hold you, kiss you and make love to you, only you, for the rest of my life.’

Well, I melted. I winced before I complained, ‘Okay, stop! How am I supposed to think straight when you go and say things like that?’ Harry sweetly smiled and so it physically hurt when I told him, ‘Give me some time to think about it, yeah?’

Harry was taken aback. Rejection probably didn’t even cross his mind. He nodded with a furrowed brow and got up.

‘Where are you going?’ I asked. Suddenly, I was afraid that I might lose him.

‘I need a hot shower to clear my head,’ Harry replied over his shoulder. He was walking to the bathroom.

‘Can I join you?’ I asked, hoping.

‘Maybe another time, love,’ he dully replied and closed the bathroom door behind him.

I quickly got up and ran downstairs. Zayn and Perrie weren’t fighting anymore. They had made up and were kissing on the sofa now. Louis and Eleanor were sitting on the kitchen table, sharing a pizza. I grabbed a blanket, wrapped it around my shoulders and went outside on the veranda, where Liam and Niall were. They were both sitting in rocking chairs. Niall was playing his guitar and Liam was writing lyrics in his notepad.

I stood in front of Liam and told him, ‘I need to talk to you.’

He looked surprised but he nodded, turning to Niall. ‘Can you leave us alone for a moment, mate?’

The Irish one got up and went inside. I sat on the rocking chair and let out a deep sigh. I was quiet for a while but Liam didn’t press me to talk. ‘Harry proposed,’ I finally said, looking straight ahead. Saying it out loud didn’t make it sound any more real. I still couldn’t believe that he had actually proposed.

‘Wow…’ Liam said.

‘Yeah…’ I replied.

‘What did you say?’ he asked.

‘I told him that I need some time to think about it.’

‘Harry doesn’t like to be rejected,’ Liam said and I looked to him.

‘But I didn’t reject him,’ I said, whining a little. Then, I blurted out all my fears, ‘What if he gets bored of me? What if he stops caring?’

‘He won’t,’ Liam told me.

‘But what if he does?’ I cried.

‘He won’t,’ Liam repeated with a comforting smile, adding, ‘And if he does, I’ll make him regret it.’

I laughed a little and got up. He got up too. ‘Thank you,’ I told him, crashing into him. I hugged him as tightly as I possibly could and he sighed into my hair. We looked at each other for a moment and I knew he wanted to say something but he didn’t.

When I returned to the bedroom, Harry was still in the shower. I carefully opened the bathroom door and walked inside. Harry didn’t hear me. I took off all my clothes and went in the tub with him. I wrapped my arms around him from behind, kissed him between the shoulder blades and pressed my cheek against his skin. Harry chuckled, looking over his shoulder at me.

‘What is it, beautiful?’ he asked. ‘Have you missed me already?’ He was grinning.

‘Yes,’ I simply replied. Hot water was falling on us both. Harry rubbed soap on his torso. ‘I want to marry you,’ I told him and he dropped the soap. I could hear his heart racing. It brought tears to my eyes. Harry turned round. He swallowed with difficulty, looking at my face.

‘Are you sure?’ he asked in a hoarse voice and when I nodded, he smiled brightly and kissed me, holding my face.

Niall barged into the bathroom, shouting, ‘Liam and Danielle got back together!’

The tub had no curtain so Harry quickly hugged me, turning his back to Niall. ‘What the hell, mate!?’ Harry protested.

‘I didn’t know Bess was in here, too. Sorry,’ Niall said. I tilted my head to the side. His face was red hot and he was staring at the ground.

‘What do you mean Liam and Danielle got back together?’ I demanded.

Not lifting his head up, Niall replied, ‘Liam called her after you left the veranda. They talked for a while and when he asked her to have dinner with him tomorrow night, she said okay.’

Brilliant … That was just … brilliant.
