2. Breakfast with Harry

I stood outside Liam’s door, breathing in and out, in and out. I was being a total coward. He had texted me last night, asking me to meet him at his flat at six in the morning. And here I was. I took another deep breath and finally knocked.

‘Come on in. It’s open,’ someone called. It was Harry. I swallowed hard and went inside.

‘Where do you keep the bathrobes, mate?’ Harry asked, walking stark naked and dripping wet in the living room. Too preoccupied wiping his hair to notice me, he added, ‘This place is huge.’

My eyes widened, my mouth hung open, and I shamelessly stared at a part of Harry Styles I never thought I’d see.

‘Oh, fuck,’ Harry cursed when he finally looked up. He wasn’t really bothered though. Wrapping the towel around his hips, he said, ‘Liam told me he invited someone over. I must have forgotten.’

I wanted to say something clever to him, or at least a ‘never mind’, but the only word which my brain and mouth were willing to produce was huge. Huge! So, instead, I laughed awkwardly, and tucked a lock of hair behind my ear.

‘I’ll go put some clothes on. Make yourself at home,’ he said and disappeared behind a wall. I bit my bottom lip, thinking that I really wouldn’t mind if he didn’t put any clothes on. When he returned, I was exactly where he had left me. I was standing like a statue in the middle of the living room. He had put on a woolen hoodie, a pair of shorts and flip flops.

‘This’ll be our dirty little secret, then, eh?’ he said, winking, and asked, walking to the kitchen, ‘Want some breakfast?’

I followed him and clumsily sat on a stool. ‘No, thanks,’ I replied, nervously looking around. There was only one word to describe Liam’s flat: Luxurious. What was I doing there? I didn’t belong.

Harry grinned, pouring milk in his cereal, ‘Nervous for meeting Liam?’

‘I don’t know why he asked me to come here,’ I said. ‘I mean, I know he’s still in love with Danielle even though they’ve broken up. The whole world knows that. ’

Harry looked at me with furrowed eyebrows. His beautiful green eyes were angry.

‘I guess it must suck not to have any privacy at all,’ I said, apologetically.

‘You have no idea,’ he said in a thick voice and ate a spoonful of cereal.

‘But I’m not saying that Liam wants to use me or anything …’

Harry put the bowl down. ‘He’s going through a really tough time right now,’ he said. ‘He’s acting a little weird lately, too.’

‘He’ll get over it.’ I realized as soon as I said it how cynical I sounded. ‘I mean, time heals everything, right?’ I added quickly.

Harry carefully studied my face, while eating his cereal, and I sat perfectly still, feeling completely uncomfortable. ‘You’re different,’ he finally said with his mouth full. ‘There’s something about you that – ’

I got up, stopping him right there. ‘Do you mind if I go for a fag out on the balcony?’ I asked, already reaching for my Marlboros.

‘You smoke!?’ Harry asked, surprised. Why was it such a big shock to these boys that I smoked? Not all of their fandom was as innocent as they thought them to be.

‘I kind of do,’ I replied with a pretty fake smile. ‘So, do you … mind?’

‘But Liam doesn’t like girls who smoke,’ Harry thought out loud.

‘Maybe he’s got everybody fooled,’ I said, ironically, but when I saw Harry’s worried face, I sighed, and said, ‘He just probably wants a girl that reminds him nothing of his ex right now.’

Harry frowned. ‘And you don’t mind that?’

I shrugged. I didn’t mind about the way people thought of me, or, treated me. Misery loved me and I had begun seeking it all around too. It was at times like this that I thought that maybe I should try those depression pills after all.

Harry waved a hand in front of my face, distracting me. I smiled at him.

‘Liam’s one of my best mates, but you really shouldn’t think of yourself in this way,’ he said and I felt as if he was trying to reach out to me somehow. It was cute that he thought he could save me. It really was.

‘Where is Liam anyway?’ I asked, changing the subject.

‘He jogs every morning at five,’ he replied, finishing his breakfast.

‘What!?’ I squeaked and Harry laughed loudly, throwing his head at the back. ‘Who does that!?’ I then asked, horrified, putting a cigarette between my lips.

Harry grabbed it and threw it in the trash. I made to complain, but he moved close and said, ‘It’s bad for you, Bess.’

He had remembered my name. I swallowed hard. I melted. My thoughts were racing, while my eyes stared into his. I could look at him for hours. He was so ridiculously handsome. Liam opened the door and Harry stepped away from me.
