My Friend Mac.

Zayn Malik is a lonely, shy and bullied boy with no friends and not much of an aim in life either! Things only get worse when he finds out his Father joins the army and is posted to Afghanistan, one of the most dangerous war zones you could imagine. Zayn is absolutely heartbroken and worried for his Dad, but before leaving, his father decides that Zayn needs a friend and a companion, he decides to take Zayn to their local dog and cat rescue Shelter where Zayn finds a 3 year old mongeral who is due to be put down as no one seems to want a stray like him, he doesn't even have a name! Zayn however quite likes this dog and decides he can't bear to just leave the dog at the shelter to die so he takes him home and names him "Mac".

As time goes by, Mac and Zayn love eachother so much. But what happens when the family are forced to move away and leave Mac? Mac escapes and embarks on the long journey home. Will he make it? Will Zayn even recognise his dog?

Dog's POV (aka soon to be Mac!)

I was home in a cardboard box making a poor excuse for a bed, my owners hadn't come home for heaven knows how long!  It felt like years, but it was probably only maybe a weeks maximum.  I was tired, hungry, scared and lonely.  I'd never really liked this place, but then again I didn't really have much right to an opinion, I've been here since I was a Puppy.  I never knew who my Mummy or Daddy were, obviously other than my  human owners.  My doggie parents were never there for me, I don't remember a thing about them, who they were, what kind of dogs they were, whether they were nice or horrible.  Even my owners don't know a thing about them!  I'm what they call a "Mongrel" which is basically where the dog is more than one breed, but no one knows what breeds the parents were.  I didn't even have a name, my owners would always yell "Oi! Get here, mutt!" whenever they needed my prescence.

Bored, I decided to get out of my box and sniff around for any food or water.  The place was already filthy enough before my owners left, but when I was abandoned here, the house became horrendous, it reeked of my pees and poos everywhere, but that wasn't my fault as no one left the door open, so it was either go in the house, or don't go at all.

I tried my best to get those horrible smells out of my nose until eventually I came into the kitchen where I found that there was a massive metal box thing built in the kitchen worktop which was what my owners called "A sink" or "wash basin".  It was filty and had dirty plates in it, but it was better than nothing.  A heavenly feeling stroked my throat as they slimy and gooey but refreshing water ran into my mouth.  Once I'd had enough, I began searching the kitchen for any food that might be around.   My owners never cared what I did, so not having any manners, I jumped onto the counter and pushed the cupboards open with my right paw.  To start with, no luck.  That is until I reached the final cupboard which had some weird shaped but nice smelling things in a bag, the label said "Sweet Popcorn".  I threw the bag down onto the floor, jumped back down, ripped the bag open with my teeth and paws and got stuck in to my first supper in a long time.  The food tasted so good,  it was the best feeling I'd ever had in my life!

Suddenly, while I was halfway through my meal, I heard a voice.

'Hello?! Mike, RSPCA inspector here!  Is anyone in?!'  A human!  Maybe he could get me some proper food and water and toys!  I bounded over to the door and gave my best bark, a mixture of a bark and a howl.  'Hello there, fella!'  He greeted me in a friendly voice, I barked at him and wagged my tail, hoping he'd get me out of here.  'Hello there! Whassa good dog? eh?'  I whimpered and pawed at the door.  'Awh you poor thing, you look pretty filthy!'  Not surprising, I've been walking around in my dirt for who knows how long!  'Hey little doggy!  Don't worry, I'll get you out of there.'  He said and suddenly stopped speaking.  I yelped and ran to the window in the living room, only to see him leaving.  I barked at him, begging him not to leave me, all he did was give me a look of sympathy before getting in his car and leaving.  I whined and kept my head down as I walked back to where my meal was.  After finishing it, I was pretty tired so I went back to my box and settled into my usual uncomfortable sleep...

I was awoken to a whistling sound.

'Here, doggy, doggy!  Where are you then, eh?  You still alive in there?!'  I sat up, it was the man from yesterday, I did my howl again and bounded over to the door, yelping, whimpering and scratching and jumping at the door.  'Oh, there you are little fella!  Just hold on a minute!'  I heard him fiddling about with something and then there was a clank and the door opened.  Not even caring who he was, I ran straight outside, jumping on him and running in circles around him whining, my tail wagging like mad.  'Hey you!  Hey there!  Hey, come on, stay still so I can get a look at ya! There's a good boy!'  He praised me as I calmed down and stood in front of him, my tail still wagging.  'Come on then, boy!  You're coming with me!'  I immediatly followed him over to the white van where he gently guided me into a large cage.

They journey didn't last long, he soon got me out of the van and took me to another man who gently examined me and let me greet him.  He was very kind to me and I was too busy observing my new surroundings to listen to him.  I'd never been out before, apart from my garden, this was so exciting!  'Well then, big guy! You hungry?'  That got my attention, I barked and wagged my tail.  He just chuckled and beckoned me to follow him where I was lead to another large cage, even bigger than the one in the van!  He let me in and dissapeared for a while before coming back with two massive bowls, one of wet dog food and one of water.  I felt so great as I finally took in that fantastic taste of dog food once again.  As for the clean water, it refreshed me even more than that stinky water in the basin at home.

I was already happy here, there were loads of other dogs barking and saying hello, I barked and said hello back, wagging my tail like mad.  Oh yes, I was gonna be ok now...
