Ten Seconds to Fall

Lucy doesn't know what to do with herself after graduation. That is, until she stumbles upon The 10 Second Fiesta.

12. from now onward to forever

Lew's perspective:

My brother had always been a little bit of a complete idiot.

So, when Lucy fell into his life I figured she'd walk all over him.

But, she didn't.

She's been behind him from day one, pushing him forward. I could see very quickly how much Jude needed her, even before they started dating. And then, even though I hated to see Lucy hurting, I was happy to see that she needed my brother as much as he needed her.

She was a little bit cold, but she's warm with him.

And now, I'm watching my brother as he paces before a judge in this ancient courthouse. He's got on this powder blue suit I helped him find out of dad's old stuff. It's just a little bit short on his arms. Jude outgrew dad by the time he hit fifteen. And he's nervous and excited. I've never seen him pace before, but he's pacing. Waiting for her.

I can't help but be a little sad. It's just been me and Jude against the world for as long as I can remember. Someone else is going to be a part of us, officially. The end of an era.

He catches my eye.

"You okay, sis?" He quirks an eyebrow.

"I'm fine," I lie, but he grabs me by the shoulders and pulls me into a hug against his chest.

I feel incredibly small, but also very safe.

"We're still you and me, you know," he said. "Still family. I'm still your brother. No less of a brother. If anything, I'm probably a better brother for giving you a good sister."

I nod against his chest.

"Love you, Lew," he says.

I nod again.

A knock at the door to the Judge's office draws our attention. Kali cracks the door open and peeks inside.

"You guys ready? 'Cause we're ready," she says.

Jude's perspective:

I swallow down my nerves.

Kali opens the door wide and I see Lucy for the first time since we shared coffee earlier in the morning. She's in a white dress with a full skirt that comes down to her knees, a sweetheart neckline, and little cap sleeves. Her pink hair is pulled back in a simple low ponytail that spills over her shoulder in loose curls. She's holding a simple bouquet of white daisies. The most beautiful girl in the universe.

The judge clears his throat behind me.

"There's no aisle to walk down, miss," he says. "Care to come into the room and join us?"

She frowns a bit, but I just beam at her and her frown turns into a chuckle. She comes into the room and I take her free hand in mine.

"Let's get to it," the judge says. "We'll make it short and sweet. We're gathered here to join these two people together in marriage, and sacred and solemn Union. Do you both understand the commit you are making?"

He looks at us sternly.

We both nod and say "yes" in unison.

"Do you both promise to love each other, to honor each other, to care for each other in sickness and health, and to be loyal to each other?"

"Okay, Jude was it? Repeat after me: I Jude, take you..."

"Lucy," she whispered.

"Lucy to be my wedded wife. To love and to cherish, from this day forward."

I repeated the vow.

"Okay, girly, repeat after me: I Lucy take you Jude to be my wedded husband. To love and cherish, from this day forward."

Lucy looked up at me and repeated the words to me.

"Then, by the power vested in me by the state of Texas, I pronounce you man and wife. Kiss if you'd like."

I looked at the JP for a long minute before he realizes.

"Oh! The rings. Exchange the rings."

I quirk a smile and Lucy rolls her eyes and she reaches into a convenient pocket on her dress and pulls out a simple silver band. I take my mother's ring out of my breast pocket and take her left hand in mine.

I slide the ring, a delicate little vine of diamonds, and place it on her finger. She slides the silver band onto mine. We both look to the officiant.

"Go ahead," he says.

I lean my head down to hers and place a kiss on her lips.

"It's done," the Judge smiles for the first time in the whole proceeding. "Go celebrate."
