14. The Fight

"I'm broken. Do you hear me? I'm blinded... cause you are everything I see?" Yes. No. Maybe. That might possibly be my boyfriend. It's only a possibility. The handsome, amazing guy sitting beside me might not be my boyfriend. I mean, he could be some stranger on the street or some insane music producer who still my song. Just kidding, it's my boyfriend.

"Sounds perfect," I smiled at Niall as I wrote down the new line of lyrics on my music sheet. I felt his eyes follow me as I bent over the sheet, writing with the pencil I had found on the piano keys when I came in to work today.

"It's nothing compared to the lyrics in the other songs you wrote," Niall scoffed in laughter. I rolled my eyes, turning to him as I stuck the pencil in my mouth, flipping my natural waves over my shoulder, running my fingers through them and leaving them there, glancing from his blue eyes to the sheet of music.

"Coming from my boyfriend who's in a band who just finished recording their fifth song on their album," I mocked, plucking the pencil from my mouth and jabbing his stomach with it. He chuckled, wrapping his arms around me and pulling me towards him. I curled into his arms, letting my head rest on his chest. He kissed the top of my head gently, running his fingers down my arm.

"How did I get so lucky?" Niall whispered against my temple.

"You didn't. You're unlucky 'cause you're stuck with me!" I corrected with a giggle, looking up at him. He smiled small, leaning down and pecking my lips.

"That's a lie because I think I'm the luckiest guy in the entire world for getting you. I have two things I was blessed with. Music and a beautiful girlfriend," He smiled. I giggled, placing a kiss on his lips.

"Sucking up, I see. What do you want, Horan?" I questioned teasingly.

"Nothing, but now that you're asking about my wants… I wouldn't mind another kiss," He suggested.

"Oh, you little," I said as I leaned in, kissing his lips. He smiled into the kiss, deepening it. I suddenly pulled away and a pout took over his lips as I smiled, pecking his lips again, standing up, "I'm going to get something to drink. Do you want something?"

"Soda would be nice," He nodded. I ruffled his hair as I got up, walking down stairs to the kitchen. I hummed the tune to the song I was writing, grabbing a water bottle for myself and a soda for Niall. I headed back up the stairs, hearing Niall's voice. My eyebrows knitted together in confusion. I walked into the music room, seeing him on the phone. His head turned to me, eyes locking on me before he spoke, "I have to go. Bye."

"Who was that?" I asked, confused by his quick, sudden actions.

"No one," He responded quickly. I looked at him in confusion before nodding, pretending to believe him but the pit in the bottom of my stomach told me otherwise. I shook it off, handing him his soda with a smile, not pressing the subject. I took a sip of water, "So what else should we put in this song of yours?"

It wasn't the first time this happened. Lately, Niall would be on his phone when I wasn't around and when I came around, he would hang up suddenly, telling the person he had to leave. Yeah, it worried me. But I didn't want Niall to think I doubted our relationship. I had learned that mistake a few years back with one of my ex-boyfriends.

"What do you mean he just hung up?" Alex asked as we sat in a tiny cafe down the street from the shopping center. She was sipping on a mocha cappuccino as I stirred my tea in its cup, watching the steam roll up in clouds in white, silvery wisps. I shrugged.

"He was on the phone when I was walking back upstairs, Al. I don't know. It was just... weird. I shouldn't even be worried about it. It was probably his mum or his brother or something, but he's just always on the phone and when I walk in, it's like I can't know who he's talking to," I shrugged.

"You shouldn't be so paranoid, Bri. You trust him, don't you?"

"Of course I do ,Al! What kind of question is that? He's my boyfriend, for crying out loud!"

"Just because he's your boyfriend doesn't mean you trust him. A lot of couples have trust issues."

"Me and Niall don't have trust issues..." I corrected, looking into her eyes in shock.

"I'm not saying you do, Bri," Alex sighed, taking a sip of her cappuccino and looking at me with a shrug, "I don't know. Just ask him about it. Press him about it if you really want to know."

"I don't know. I guess I'll just wait to see..."

And with that, I did. I waited two days after having that talk with Alex to see if maybe Niall would be on the phone again and tell me who it was he was talking to, but he never did. Even one of the times we hung out, he got up from the couch and left me there to watch the movie by myself for about ten minutes as he went to talk on the phone. Was I mad? Furious. Then he would just tell me it was no one important.

"Hi love," I was greeted with a kiss on the lips and a Horan hug. Niall smiled lovingly at me, blue eyes searching my own.

"Hi," I responded. Was my anger starting to show? I suppose. It wasn't what I planned, but if Niall refused to show me any kind of trust and tell me who he was on the phone with, maybe it would be different.

"What's wrong?" He asked, his eyebrows knitting together in confusion and worry. I shrugged, continuing to wash the dishes my mother had ordered me to do as my daily chore.

"Nothing."

"Nothing? Briana, you're obviously mad about something. What's going on, babe?"

"Nothing's going on, Niall!" I snapped. Phase two. I start to snap at him. Lovely.

"Bri..." His eyes were soft. Weak. Full of concern. I slapped the sink off, my hand shoving the metal down and then continued to put my hands on the counter, looking at the soapy water, seeing the rainbow reflecting on the bubbles of the dish soap. I shook my head, "Briana, what's wrong? Just please tell me."

"What's wrong, Niall, is that you're constantly on the phone. Always on that phone. If it rings, you leave me to answer it. If I walk in, you hang up. When I ask who it is, it's nobody," I retorted, spinning on my heel to face him. I looked him straight in the eye as I spoke. I felt bold and I felt broken. This was leading towards something we both didn't want.

"Bri, are you serious right now?" Niall sighed.

"AM I SERIOUS? Niall, don't make me sound like I'm being ridiculous! Or that I'm a psychotic jealous girlfriend! I shouldn't have to be. I shouldn't have to question my boyfriend's trust in a relationship. What is so wrong with telling me who you're talking to?" I questioned angrily.

"You're questioning my trust? My trust, Bri? Are you joking? Of course you should trust me. We're in a relationship! That is based off of trust"

"SO WHY CAN'T YOU TELL ME? HMMMMM? Why can't you tell me who you've been talking to? Are you cheating on me? Is that it? Is that why you always come back with that stupid smile on your face?" I shouted.

"I would never cheat on you, Briana! I would never do that to you!" Niall defended.

"You said you wouldn't do a lot of things, Niall! That one day in Liam's room, you told me that you would never do anything to hurt me. That you cared about me. Well if you care so much about me and you don't want to hurt me, then why are you? Why are you hurting me right now? Why am I questioning your trust?" I asked furiously.

"I don't know, Bri! I don't know why you're questioning my trust! You have no reason to be! I'm loyal to you. You are my girlfriend. I care about you more than I ever have about anyone else. Why can't you accept the fact I don't want to tell you who I'm talking to?" He asked just as angrily.

"Because I can't help but thinking you're going against your word. That you’re doing things behind my back. I shouldn't feel like that. I shouldn't have to go through that feeling."

"No, you shouldn't have to! So stop feeling that way! I'm not doing anything, Bri! I'm faithful to you."

"Me alone? No one else? Just me?"

"Just you." He nodded in agreement. His eyes were softer. The sweet, cute Niall I knew had returned from the scary, angry Niall who I had just had an argument with, "I'm sorry I hurt you, baby. I shouldn't have yelled at you like that."

"No. I'm sorry"

"Don't apologize for something that's my fault," Niall warned, wrapping his arms around me. I buried my face into his shoulder, finding my comfortable position in his arms. He kissed the top of my head, "I'm sorry."

"Apology accepted," I murmured into his chest. He smiled and I looked up at him. He bent down, pressing his lips to mine, "I like you. You're cute."

"I like you too. You're pretty," He whispered, nuzzling his nose against mine, causing me to giggle.

And from there, everything seemed to be fine... for a while.
