20. My Dreams

"So what are you going to sing for your audition?" Alex asked with her eyes dancing with excitement.

"You'll see," I said with a giggle. My mom and Alex smiled and laughed with me.

Everything in my entire life led up to this moment. Whatever happened with Niall. Whatever happened with Missy. That didn't matter anymore. I was moving on. I would get over this. Someday, I would be somebody. I was going to be there. I was going to live in a big city. I was going to make music. This audition was going to change not only my life, but so many others.

"Are you ready?"

No. I felt like I was going to vomit. I felt like I was going to pass out. My hands were literally shaking a bit and I could barely breathe. On a scale of 1-10, how prepared was I? Negative 23847829374. Before, I was so confident, so ready. Hit backstage, it vanished.

"I hope so," I responded honestly. I earned a round of laughter from the four people around. Three of who came with me on the trip to London. The other laugh came from Dermot O'Leary. Yes, I repeat. DERMOT O'LEARY. In case you have no television set like a normal family, Dermot O'Leary was the presenter of the X Factor.

"She's got it. You're going to blow them away, Bri," Alex cheered. Alex and my parents. The three people who joined me to the O2 Arena to support me for my hopeful attempt at landing a spot in this season of X Factor. I was glad I chose them to come although I would've loved to have Jonathan, Jason, and Bella with me as well but they wished me the best of luck.

"You're coming up, love," Dermot smiled warmly at me. In the time we had together, I took a liking to Dermot. He was a good presenter and he really knew how to calm my nerves when the cameras weren't in front of us. He knew exactly how to relieve the butterflies roaring in my stomach. A beep was heard from Dermot, "Ah. There you are."

"You have this in the bag, sweetheart. Good luck," My dad said, pressing his lips to my forehead in a sweet kiss. He stroked my hair and smiled reassuringly at me. My mom gave me a tight hug as Alex hugged me next. They wished me the best of luck as Dermot walked me to the side stage and wished me luck as I headed off. I grabbed the microphone from the crew member and it felt ten times heavier than it normally weighs.

The second I walked onto stage, I felt all eyes on me. I was the center of attention. The lights shone into my eyes and I forced a smile onto my lips. I looked towards the judges' table and my heart quickened. These four people in front of me would decide my future. As I reached center stage, I clicked my heels together, smiling at the judges with something that seemed so genuine.

"Hello love," Louis Walsh greeted me with a friendly smile.

"Hi," I responded shyly with a smile. They all smiled at me as if they've known me forever.

"What's your name?" Tulisa Contostavlos asked with a smile in my direction.

"Briana Hill," I replied. I found myself relaxing a bit before the thought hit me. I wasn't here to have a friendly conversation with them. I was here to sing my heart out to make it onto this show. I was here to take a shot at the future I dreamed of.

"How old are you, Bri?" Kelly Rowland inquired. They were all smiles and it relaxed my heartbeat a bit, because it kind of reassured me that they wouldn't crush my dreams. They would do it much gentler.

"I'm 18," I informed.

"Alright and what are you going to be singing for us today?" Louis questioned, tapping his pen on the table.

"Uh, I am going to be singing Hey Soul Sister by Train." With no response back, I removed the microphone from the vicinity of my lips to clear my throat gently. I bit my lip gently, glancing into the crowd, seeing cameras and people's gazes glued to me. The beat of the song began and it felt like slow motion as I lifted the microphone up to my lips.

"Your lipstick stains, on the front lobe of my left side brain. I knew I wouldn't forget you and so I went and let you blow my mind," A smile had made its way on my lips as I let the music take over me. As my voice got some applause, I felt my butterflies vanish. It was only me and the music.

"Your sweet moonbeam, the smell of you in every single dream I dream. I knew it, we collided, you're the one I have decided who's one of my kind. Hey soul sister. Ain't that mister mister on the radio, stereo, the way you move ain't fair, you know. Hey soul sister, I don't wanna miss a single thing you do....." I sang. As I gazed into the crowd once again, I felt the realization that I just sang in front of cameras that would put this on television, that people back home would see me, that this could be it. "Tonight."

With the last word of my audition, the crowd burst into applause and I smiled as I lowered the microphone from my lips, smiling gently and looking at the judges who were writing things down. I saw Gary whispering into Kelly's ear. The first person to start clapping was Louis who smiled at me as he joined the rest of the crowd who seemed to not stop their cheering. I was overwhelmed. These people were standing up for me. Of all people… me. I looked around the entire arena, seeing people standing up in their seats.

"Bri-" Louis stopped with the echoes of the screams of the crowd. He chuckled and they began to quiet down, "Briana. Wow. Your voice," The crowd screamed again and my hand wound its way to the back of my neck as I felt my knees bump into each other, one of my feet beginning to kick up, "That right there is exactly how I'm feeling! Your voice is beautiful. You are amazingly talented."

"Thank you," I said into the microphone gently. The crowd cheered as my view went to the rest of the judges curiously.

"Briana, I am in awe of how gorgeous of a voice you have. You were phenomenal. You came out here and it was like that crowd came here for you. They didn't come here to see auditions, they came to see you, Briana Hill, perform. I bet you could sell this entire arena out if you had the chance!" Tulisa commented with a nod as the crowd cheered. The smile on my face seemed permanent, never leaving, "You could stand right there with nothing but a microphone stand and still have the crowd in awe. You're amazing."

"Thank you so much," I laughed as the crowd cheered. I felt my insides churning.

"Kelly?" Gary suggested. My eyes fell to Kelly who smiled at me as she heard her name.

"Sweetie, you have one of the most amazing voices I have ever heard," She admitted and the cheer responded happily. I laughed, smiling brightly, biting my lip so hard, I tasted blood, "You came out here unsure if you were going to make it and like you didn't know you had that kind of voice, but Briana... you have it," The crowd went wild and I laughed, in awe of this moment. I had dreams of this stuff and here it was. I had Kelly Rowland telling me I had a voice, "You are a beautiful and talented girl. Never let anyone tell you otherwise."

As the crowd cheered, Gary chuckled at the noise and smiled up at me after glancing over his shoulder at the crowd, "The crowd already loves you as do all four of us, I suppose. Sweetheart, you were fantastic. You are, by far, the best performer we've seen all night. You're talented, you're beautiful, you're sweet, and you’re lovable. We are here trying to find someone who will be able to sell records and sell out arenas and Briana Hill… you are the one."

Tears of joy filled my eyes and I blinked them back, smiling as I raised the microphone up to my lips, "Thank you all so much." I was overwhelmed. Thank you seemed to be the one thing I even understood what to say.

"Alright, we're gonna vote now. Louis," Gary stated.

"A massive yes for me," Louis announced and the crowd cheered as I smiled, putting both of my hands to my lips. I felt the tears that I tried to blink back return as I tried to control my heart that was beating out of my chest.

"Complete 100% yes," Tulisa nodded. Again the crowd cheered. I could picture everyone backstage, everyone at home jumping up and down in excitement. I pictured my mom and Alex jumping all around. I could see the tears in my mother's eyes. I could see that smile on my dad's face. I could see Alex throwing her arms around Dermot in excitement.

"We shouldn't even have to vote. Yes all the way," Kelly said, slamming her hands onto the table with a wide smile. My breath caught in my throat. Even if Gary said no, I would've still made it through. I would've made it on. I would slowly be getting there.

"Briana Hill," Gary stated. My heart stopped as I looked at him curiously. He looked so serious. Like he was about to break my heart or tell me that he stole my childhood toy, "Four yeses. Congratulations."

Relief filled my heart. As the crowd began cheering even louder, as the judges began clapping and smiling, as the tears threatened to fall down my face, as I put my face in my hands, bending over, it all felt unreal. It felt like this wasn't happening. This was happening though. I thanked the judges before heading off the stage, quickly moving to get backstage.
