The House Next Door [One Direction]

COMPLETED: One Direction: Harry Styles/OC - Victoria lives next door to her best-friend Jeremy. Jeremy lives with his friends Dan and Gemma. Gemma's brother comes to visit with his friends. Having nine people crowded into two houses was never going to be easy, but it was always preferable to the alternative.

3. I take it you're a fan

The next morning, Victoria awoke early to find that the house was devoid of any human life, other than her own self.

Taking advantage of the peace and quiet, she settled herself on the couch with a freshly brewed cup of tea. Warm cup tightly clenched in her hands, she was about to take a sip when there were several loud thuds that seemed to be emanating from the wall that separated her house from the house that Jeremy, Gemma and Gemma’s boyfriend were usually residing.

Victoria had half a mind to go and tell them to keep the noise down, in no uncertain terms, however, the noise stopped as quickly as it had started.

Sinking back down into the softness of the couch, she flicked on the television and attempted to find something worth watching on this dreary Saturday morning. However, her serenity was destroyed once more when the thunderous noises resumed once more on the other side of the brickwork.

Making sure she was adequately dressed, Victoria pulled her coat over her clothes and marched out her front door, around the dividing fence and through the gate of Gemma’s house.

Knocking furiously on the door, she waited with as much patience as she could muster, for the door to open.

After a minute or so with no response, she knocked again. A faint voice could be heard from inside, one which she recognised to be Gemma’s boyfriend, Dan.

“Did anyone else hear anything?”

Taking advantage of the auditory lull, Victoria knocked yet again, but with more ferocity.

“I’ll grab it.”

The door swung open and Victoria was greeted with the smiling face of Jem.

“Hey, babe. What’s up?”

Victoria raised one eyebrow at him.

“So, this is where you’ve been all morning? Besides, I told you to stop calling me ‘babe’. It makes people think we’re together, and we’re not.”

“You know you love it. The lads invited me round for a bit of fun. Wanna come in? I’ll introduce you...”

Jeremy twisted his head to shout over his shoulder to the other occupants of the house.

“Harry put some pants on, we’ve got a guest!”

Hearing a voice mumble somewhere in the distance, Victoria peeked past Jem into what was the lounge room. Lounging casually in various parts of the room, in various states of dress, were the members of One Direction.

Jem walked Victoria over and pointed to each of the lads as he introduced them.

“That’s Liam vs. Zayn on the Wii....Harry! I told you to put pants on!.... Louis is the one on his phone...where’d Niall go?”

Jem’s head swivelled on his neck rapidly, looking for the blonde Irishman while Zayn and Liam diverted their attention from the game for long enough to shout a quick hello to Victoria.

“Kitchen,” replied Louis finally looking up from his phone.

“He’d better not have found my stash...” mumbled Jem before racing off towards the back of the house, leaving Victoria alone with the boys.

“Hi,” she said in a voice that sounded like it was barely above a whisper.

“It’s nice to meet you,” replied Louis, pocketing the phone and getting up for a proper hello.

“I take it you’re a fan,” said Harry with a smirk, as he too made his way over to Victoria.

Victoria smiled helplessly in response.

“You would think that I would be a little more normal considering I am in constant contact with your family, Harry.”

“Nah, it’s alright. I’ve gotten much worse.”

“How horrible!”

“No, not really. But what is horrible is you having to share a house with Jeremy while we’re here,” replied Harry with a wink.

“What are you saying about me?” laughed Jeremy as he re-entered the room, arms full of a large assortment of chocolates and sweets.

“We’re apologising for taking over your place, and subsequently Victoria’s,” replied Louis.

“It’s alright,” asserted Victoria. “It gives us a chance to spend some quality time together. We’ve both been so busy lately, we haven’t’ had the chance-”

“Are you together then?” asked Harry suddenly from his new position on the edge of the arm rest of the nearest couch. There was an urgency in his voice that Victoria had never picked up on before, either on the radio, TV or in their current conversation.

Not knowing what to say, Victoria let Jeremy answer for her.

“Nope, we’re not together, but we like to give the impression that we are, don’t we?”

“You might,” snorted Victoria.

“Don’t listen to Toto,” cooed Jem, “she knows she loves it.”

He looked over to Victoria who was currently looking at Harry with the most peculiar expression on her face.

The remainder of the morning was spent playing video games, eating cold pizza and making fun of Jem’s nickname for Victoria.

In fact, by lunchtime, even Gemma was calling Victoria, Toto.

“I thought you were on my side!” cried Victoria the first time Gemma had used the diminutive.

Gemma merely shrugged.

“You have a very pretty name, sweetie, but Toto is easier to say.”

“I agree,” came Harry’s voice from underneath a cushion that Louis was calmly mashing into his face.

“You agree? Victoria is not that difficult to say, Harry.”

Harry’s arm reached up from his side, and snatched away the cushion, successfully allowing him to breathe normally once more.

“Actually I was agreeing that Victoria is a pretty name, but yeah, Gemma’s also right. Toto is much easier to say.”

He looked away just in time to cover his own blush, but he did not miss the bright pink that was creeping onto Victoria’s face.

Despite himself, he looked out the corner of his eye to where she was sitting, eyes glued to the TV, but still flushed.

“What?” he mouthed when he turned back to Louis, who was giving him an odd look.

Louis only shook his head and smiled at his friend.
