14. Friends Don't Kiss

ROSE’S POV

That morning when I went downstairs in my clothes for work I was surprised to see my dad. He was in his suit, getting ready to leave. When he saw me, he smiled brightly and gave me a huge hug and

“Happy 17th birthday, Rose! I made sure to take a late morning today so I could say hi,” he said. It made my entire day that my dad would take time off for me, knowing how hard it was for him to get that time.

“Thanks dad, I love you,” I answered, sitting down in the kitchen.

“I’m gonna get going, see you later tonight,” he grabbed his coffee and rushed out the back door. That was the last time I saw my dad.

Soon, Cheryl came downstairs while I was eating breakfast. I wasn’t planning on saying anything to her, and of course she wasn’t going to wish me a happy birthday. I was surprised to hear her say, “are you going out today?” as if I went out every day.

“Why would I go out? You don’t allow me to!” I sneered.

“You can go out today, and preferably don’t come home,” she wasn’t looking right at me, making her seem suspicious.

“Um…okay,” at this point, her phone rang. When she looked at who it was, her face turned white and she quickly answered. While she was whispering into her phone, her perfume got into my breakfast and my appetite was ruined. I was going to go upstairs to grab my phone but I decided not to, and sat on the stairs just so I could hear Cheryl’s hushed conversation with whoever was on the other end of the phone.

“Yeah, I’m sure he’s gone,” was all I could hear from her. She was definitely talking about my dad.

I heard the back door creak open, and then I heard a man’s voice. A man that was not my dad. I almost gasped, but I caught myself. If Cheryl found me eavesdropping, I would definitely be dead.

“Do you have the stuff?” I heard the man’s deep voice say. After that, I only heard whispers and shuffles. Something was going on, something weird.

Then, I heard Julia come into the kitchen from the TV room probably.

“Hey, Jules,” I heard the man say. How did this man know Julia?! I was beyond creeped out, my hands were shaking, and I absolutely could not wait to get out of this house. I tried so hard not to get up and walk in there, and ruin their “private time”.

I almost flinched when I heard Shannon beep in the driveway. Right when the man and Cheryl heard me coming, it was completely silent in the kitchen. I decided to not tell Shannon about what was going on at my house. I didn’t know what it meant yet, but when I did, I would probably tell her. She gave me a huge huge and said happy birthday, and then she told me that the boys wanted us to come over after work, I almost argued with her, but she would probably make me go anyways.

When we were about to leave Starbucks, Shannon stopped me.

“We can’t see them looking like this! I brought you a change of clothes!” I rolled my eyes at her, but gratefully accepted the outfit and changed in the Starbucks bathroom. It was a tight fitting skirt with tribal patterns on it, but Shannon knew my situation with my arm being in a sling and packed me a loose sweater to wear with it.  Of course I had nothing to wear underneath but a bra, and the sweater had little holes in it. Shannon probably did this on purpose, but there was nothing I could do about it now.

HARRY’S POV

Everything was going according to plan, the room was filled with people hiding behind couches, and even Eleanor and Louis made it. Ava and Niall did an amazing job of cleaning the house and inviting friends. I got a text from Shannon saying they were almost at the flat, so I told everyone to get in their  places and be ready.

Rose’s face when we surprised her was priceless! She had no idea whatsoever about this party, and it was all perfect. She looked absolutely gorgeous, I told Shannon to dress her up nice for me. The boys and I surrounded her and said hi. She looked overwhelmed, but also excited. We all hugged her but I made sure my hug was the longest.

ROSE’S POV

Soon, I found myself with a drink in my hand, sitting on the couch, talking to Liam and Shannon. I met Eleanor, she was beautiful and sweet, but her and Louis were ALREADY nowhere to be seen. I almost felt out of place at this party, there were a couple of people that I didn’t know and Harry was talking to a group of guys I had never seen before. Whoever set up this room made a nice dance floor in the middle, by moving the TV out and putting the couches up against the wall. Ava and Niall, along with all of the other guests looked like they were having a good time, but I just felt awkward and alone. I couldn’t stop thinking about Cheryl and whatever she was up to.

Finally, Harry came over and put his hand out to me. I grabbed it with my only functional arm and he pulled me up off of the couch. I had to admit, he looked really hot, his hair in perfect curls and his button down shirt.

“Happy birthday, beautiful,” he whispered in my ear, and took me over to where everyone else was dancing.

“Friends don’t call friends beautiful, Harry,” I answered, but he didn’t even seem to notice. He was too busy wrapping his arms around my waist. He took the hand he was holding and put it around his neck. “Harry….”

“What? Friends are allowed to dance with friends, am I wrong?” We were so close that his cheek was touching my cheek, and my head was practically resting on his shoulder. I was so nervous that Harry could probably feel my heart beating through my chest. My nose filled with the smells of his cologne, and I got chills from his warm breath on my neck. Instead of arguing with him, I tried to enjoy the moment, swaying back and forth.

All of a sudden, I heard yelling from the other side of the room. Harry and I both looked up, confused. He pulled away and turned around, realizing what it was. Two of the boys that Harry was talking with earlier were screaming over something, their faces red with anger, looking like they wanted to hurt each other. Harry motioned for me to stay where I was, and he went up to the to see what was going on. Niall was over there as well, already trying to break the guys up before somebody threw a punch. When Harry got over there, he was clearly pissed.

“I MADE YOU GUYS PROMISE YOU WOULDN’T DO THIS! YOU’RE RUINING HER BIRTHDAY! STOP IT OR LEAVE!” This was the first time I had ever seen Harry this mad. The guys stopped arguing, but they still looked so angry. A couple words were said that I couldn’t hear, and from my understanding Harry kicked the guys out. When he came back over to me, he just looked normal like nothing had even happened.

“I told them they couldn’t come if they were going to ruin your birthday!” He said, looking disappointed.

                “Harry, I promise it’s fine. I don’t even care.”

“No! It’s not fine! Everything is messed up now,” he put his hand on my arm.

“I promise, I’m having a great time, don’t worry about it,” it was clear that Harry really cared about making this day special for me, which was really sweet.  The night progressed, and as it did, the music started to get louder and people started to get drunker. Shannon and Liam were back to what they were doing a week ago, making out. Ava and Niall were nowhere to be seen, probably somewhere joking around. Zayn and Griffen were in the kitchen, talking and laughing. I was happy, even though I wanted Harry and I couldn’t have him.

At around 10 o’clock, Harry told me he wanted me to come outside with him. He grasped my hand and lead me out to the back porch.

“I have to give you my present,” he said. We were the only people on the porch, there were a couple people scattered around the backyard, but other than that we were completely alone. The summer air was cool, stars twinkling in the black sky. I was really distracted by the fact that his dress shirt was now unbuttoned, and you could see his abs through his tank top.

“Harry, you didn’t have to get me a present,” I started to say but he cut me off. He pulled a light blue box out of his pocket. I was smiling ear to ear. Inside the box was a silver necklace with a heart charm, and another charm with a small “R” on it. He motioned for me to turn around, and he moved my hair, carefully putting the necklace on me.

“Thank you so much Harry! It’s gorgeous!” He pulled me closer to him, smiling, His arms were around my waist again, his nose almost touching mine.

“Can I kiss you?” He asked, completely breaking the ‘just friends’ rule. I didn’t answer, I just crashed my lips into his, wanting him more than anything.

I didn’t want to be over, but when it was, all I could manage was, “friends don’t kiss,” he giggled and stroked my cheek with his thumb.

“Now they do,” he answered, right when he was leaning in for another one, Ava whipped open the door, looking worried, holding my phone in one hand.

“Sorry to ruin the moment out here, but I found your phone buzzing like crazy, Rose. Julia called you like four times, and look at her text,” she reached out my phone to me, and I pulled away from Harry.

My heart completely stopped when I read the words from Julia on the screen.

come to the hospital asap. if you wanna say goodbye to your dad.
