20. Phone Home

Abby's POV_

I didn't really ask to have feelings for Evan. I loved Niall with all of my heart and soul, so why was it so difficult to say that I'd take him over this guy I met at three in the morning somewhere off? It wasn't really, but I couldn't push down the fact that I had wanted to hold Evan's hand. "Hey there now. Listen, I'm sure it's nothing, and all you need is a hot bath, a cup of tea and season 3 of Pretty Little Liars, okay?" Madeleine soothed. "It's gonna be alright. I promise." I nodded and went into my room. I started to run a bath, pushing the lever all the way to hot. I shimmied out of my sweatpants and into a bathrobe, then squeezed oodles of vanilla bubblebath into the running water. Bubbles started forming in the tub, calling my name. I slipped out of my bathrobe and into the water. I pushed the lever with my toes and turned the water off. There was a knock at the door. "It's me," Madeleine said. I didn't even bother telling her to come in. She set a teacup on the table and told me to relax a bit, that everything would clear up. That 'My rainbow would come shining through' or some kind of Cinderella crap quote she probably got from my sister over the phone. "You know, you should really call Leandra." she set the home phone next to the cup. "No. Now way, absolutely not." She looked at me, her big blue eyes full of worry. "She'd know what to do, Abby. She always does." I knew she was right, but I didn't want to talk to her. She'd left me all alone after her boyfriend died in a car crash. She thought that was a good enough excuse to walk out on our family when she was 18, when I was only 14. So, three years later, I left home. Tried to find her. Couldn't. So Madeleine and I moved into a flat together and started a  new life that didn't involve my family, and mainly shut out hers. Her brothers, my sisters, completely left behind. All of it. Gone. "It's the best thing to do." I looked up at her, not wanting to give into them. "Fine." I picked up the phone and dialled her number, which I still knew by heart. It rang a few times, then I heard a voice. "Hello? Who is this?" Was that... Harrison?! "Hi, Harrison, this..." Madeleine looked surprised when I said his name. "This is Abby." There was silence on the other end. Harrison was Madeleine's older brother. But the question remained, why did he have Leandra's phone? "Uh, hi. Uhm, were you looking for Anndra?" he said. "Uh, depends. Who is 'Anndra'?" He cleared his throat. "Leandra. She started going by Anndra a few years ago. Are you looking for her?" I nodded, but then realized he couldn't see it. "Uh, yeah." I said quickly. He put his hand over the speaker. "Anndra, phone!" he screamed. "Hello?" Leandra said. "Hi, uhm, I..." "Oh my God. Abby? What... Why are you calling?" I took a deep breath. "I need your help." She stayed quiet, letting me know she was listening. "But, first, why does Harrison have your phone?" She hesistated. "We're engaged now." I smiled. "I knew that was gonna happen eventually!" she laughed, but not fully, like she used to laugh at all my jokes. I began to explain to her everything that happened in the past few years, and when I ended with 'Now I don't know what to do, and Niall's not even home yet, and Madeleine's here, and I'm sitting in a bathtub on the phone so confused and she told me to call you because you'd know what to do, and I just... I just need help', her first response was: "Madeleine's dating Harry Styles?" I started to cry. I knew she wouldn't help me! I knew it! "Hey, calm down. I'm here, okay? Look, I remember when I was in a situation kind of like this one. But... the other beau was Declan." I laughed out loud. "Declan?!" Declan was Madeleine's little brother, and Leandra chased him around when they were younger, giving him kisses on the cheek and teasing him, saying they were going to get married and have kids. He hated it, but it was so funny. "Yep. But... I asked myself, can I really imagine a future with... either of them?" I tried to imagine Leandra and Harrison, sitting on bleachers, watching their son play baseball, or watching their daughter play soccer. Then... it wasn't Leandra and Harrison. It was me... and... Niall. Not Evan. "So, you decided to choose Harrison because he was more like you?" I asked. "No. Harrison and I are polar opposites. We fight all the time, but we love each other. So much. It's worth it. I chose Harrison because... it's what my heart needed. I hope that helped. Tell Madeleine I said hi, okay? I have to go. Harrison has a hockey game, and I'm taking Chloe and Mia to watch." "He still plays hockey?" She sighed. "Religiously. Bye! Hey, Abbs? I love you." "Love you too." I hung up the phone and filled Madeleine in. "So... Who'd you choose?" "I know for sure now. I love Niall so, so, so, So much, but you know, Evan's so.... he's just got that... thing." "So? Who?!" "I'm 100% sure on this..."
