Make A Wish

Madeleine and Abby are best friends who have gone through the best and the worst together. Abby had already found the one, but Madeleine was still searching via blind dates. When Abby picks out ONE MORE date, she finally falls in love with Harry Styles. Through heartbreak, tears, and coming back stronger than ever, the girls realize love takes fighting, even when the boy of your dreams is already yours. On Madeleine's 18th birthday, she only has one wish- but is what she wants really what she needs?

14. Leaving

I smiled to myself as Abby duct-taped the last box shut. A tear rolled down her cheek. "I feel so awful," she said. "Don't!" I consoled. She sighed. "I hate leaving you. I mean, what are you going to do? I really, really, really don't want to loose you, Big Bird," she said, starting to cry harder. She sometimes called me Big Bird because once for Halloween she was Oscar the Grouch and I was Big Bird. "Loose me? You'll never loose me. You're kind of stuck with me." She smiled. "Now, come on. Stop crying and take this box out to the car. You and Niall are going to have the best time of your lives. I don't want to stand in your way." I picked up a box and so did she. We put them in the car and slammed the trunk. I got into the passenger seat and shut the door. She started driving to Niall's flat. I was so happy for her, but also, as I hate to admit, a little mad. I didn't want her to leave. So maybe I wasn't mad, but I was upset. I needed my best friend here! What would I do without her? I wasn't sure. "Hey, Madeleine?" she said. I looked up at her. "You'll always be my little sister, okay?" I technically WAS her "little sister", even though we weren't sisters, and I was only two weeks younger. "Okay. I promise that no matter what, I'll always be here. No matter where you live or who you live with. Forever," I said, fingering the BFF bracelet on my wrist she'd gotten me for our 5th Friendaversary. "You mean that?" she said, pulling into the parking lot outside the complex where Niall's flat was. "Of course I do. Come on, let's bring this stuff in." We piled up two boxes each and I slung her duffle bag over my shoulder. I knocked on the door to the flat with my forehead. "Hey!" Niall said. "Welcome home," he said, taking a box from Abby and placing it on the kitchen table. "This is so incredible," Abby said. "What? You've been here before," Niall said. "Yeah, but never as ours," Niall smiled so wide. "I love that." he said. "Love what?" she asked. "Ours. It's the best word in the world," I mouthed the word- just to be sure. It fit. She hugged him for a long time, and I stood there, watching. Standing on the outside- the fringe of the situation... But it didn't matter. I was used to that. When they finally broke apart, Abby turned to me. Her lip quivered. I was going to say something, but she cut me off and just hugged me. I hugged her back. "Hey, please don't cry," she whispered. "I won't," I said, my voice breaking. "I mean... I'll try. Abby, please try your hardest not to feel sorry for me." "Sorry?" she said, taking a step back. "I don't feel sorry for you. Did you want me to take pity on you because you weren't moving in with your boyfriend?" "No- that's not what I meant. You know that! But... I... I mean, w-why do you always have to be so much better than me?" Well that was certainly more than I planned on saying.... "What?!"  she said. "Me! Better than you?" "Well, yeah!" I screamed. "The one with the perfect boyfriend! The older one! Captain of the softball team! Six time Wakefield Idol champion! Need I go on?" "You make it sound like I treat you like crap while I go charm the world with my various skills and my face that can launch a thousand ships!" "Maybe you do!" I screamed. "And- and I can't believe you were ever my friend! I hate you!" As soon as the last word left my mouth, I instantly regretted them. She stood there for a moment, hands shaking, lip quivering, tears falling. Then she turned around and ran down the hallway, slamming the bedroom door behind her. Niall ran after her, knocking softly on the door and pleading for her to come out. I ran out the door, crying hard. I drove home as fast as I could. I opened up the medicine cabinet with my epilepsy medicine in it and dumped it into my hand. I crumpled into a ball on my bathroom floor, hands clammy and shaky, filled with powerful pills. I balanced life and death in my hand. I opened my mouth, ready to swallow all of them. I had swalloed four when the door burst open. "Madeleine? Madeleine!" someone said. I could barely make out Harry's blurry face. "How many did you take? Madeleine! Madeleine! Talk to me! Please, please!" Then everything was dark.
