Too Close ~ (One Direction Not Famous)

Sophie and Niall have been best friends for years. But at the start of year 11, Sophie sees something different in him. Not only must Sophie cope with her own runaway feelings but she also has to try to keep up with the crazy lives of her other friends.

Will anything ever be simple?

12. The Way the World Works

After trawling the shops for a good few hours, we had all found the perfect outfits! I wasn’t really one for short, tight stuff so I had chosen a red, lace skater dress and some black wedges. Anna, unlike me, had an incredible figure so had gone with a black and white striped skirt with an electric blue sleeveless shirt to wear with her matching blue heels that made my feet hurt just by looking at them. Alice had found the cutest flowery shorts and matching print crop top that went perfectly with her brown brogues. Lucy was pretty tall and thin so went with some black skinny jeans, a red check blouse and, even though she didn’t exactly need them, some huge leopard print heels. Millie had taken the longest to find something but eventually, she found a gorgeous cream and pink playsuit. I think it is safe to say that we were all pretty pleased with what we had bought so we headed to Starbucks for our usual celebratory Frappuccino. As we approached, we could see there was a massive queue but it was hardly surprising. It was always ridiculously busy. We pushed the doors open and stepped inside, embracing the warmth as it had become a bit chilly outside.

Alice and Anna went straight up the stairs to try and find us a seat leaving me, Millie and Lucy in the queue. We didn’t need to ask what they wanted; we all always had a caramel Frappuccino every single time we came here.

The queue crawled forward extremely slowly leaving me the chance to gossip with Mills and Lucy. “So how are things with Zayn?” I asked. “Great! He is just so incredible. You know the other week he asked me round and when I got there, he had cooked dinner and everything!” answered Lucy, a huge grin spreading across her face as she spoke. “If only we were all that lucky!” I laughed.

“Well Soph, I can think of someone who wouldn’t mind being your boyfriend! And I am pretty sure you wouldn’t say no either!” Millie said, winking. My heart skipped a beat. They weren’t talking about Niall were they? Anna was the only one I had told and she had promised to keep it to herself. Surely she wouldn’t have told them. I decided to act the innocent.

“Who?” I asked, using all of my minimal acting ability. “You honestly don’t know?” asked Lucy in disbelief. Ok, now I was really confused. I shrugged, indicating that they should elaborate. “We’re talking about George you idiot!” Millie said, rolling her eyes. Well I didn’t see that one coming.

“Oh come on Sophie!” said Lucy, noticing my confusion, “You must have noticed. The way he looks at you and acts around you, he is basically in love”. I didn’t really know what to say. I was totally speechless. Since when had he like me? And more importantly why? Oh god what if he thought I felt the same? I suddenly realised that the way I acted around him could be interpreted as flirting but I had never really thought of it as more than mucking around and banter. He knew that right?

I found myself faced with a massive problem. It was Niall I wanted, not George. But I didn’t want anyone’s feelings to get hurt. I considered George to be one of my best friends… Maybe a fling with George was what I need to get Niall off my mind. NO. That would be using George and I could never do that.

A hand waved in my face, pulling me out of my day dream. “Sophie! We’re almost at the front of the queue!” giggled Lucy. “Oh right, ok” I said, deciding to do my best to forget about this whole situation for now and enjoy the rest of the day.

Armed with our tray of frappuccinos, we ascended the stairs to find Anna and Alice. As we reached the landing, we heard two voices shouting “Guys over here! And surely enough, Anna and Alice had managed to get two of the big sofas and were waving manically. Chuckling to myself I made my way over to them, taking care not to go flying. I plonked myself down on one of the sofas and breathed a sigh of relief as the weight was finally taken off my feet. Alice came and sat next to me with a cry of “Ugh I am so exhausted!”. We all laughed and began to talk about the party.

We were just all laughing at the story about last time we were at a party and Anna had walked into a glass door thinking it was open when I spotted a familiar blonde head coming up the stairs. Great.  Just what I wanted. I was finally having a great day with my friends where I could just forget about Niall when BAM. The Irish wonder himself shows up and reduces my insides to jelly. Damn him.

I realised that no one else had noticed his appearance (probably because no one else was that bothered by it) so if figure that as long as I didn’t say anything, I could avoid having to talk to him and make an idiot of myself yet again.

I saw him look around for somewhere to sit. Just then his face lit up and he strolled to the centre of the room where he sat down opposite a girl. Oh wonderful, it was Gemma.

How did I not notice he had two drinks on his tray? To avoid the inevitable hurt I would feel if I saw them together. I turned back to my friends to see the conversation had turned to how much of a cow Hannah was (a topic that Millie seemed very passionate about). I was just about to throw in a comment about the copious amounts of makeup she shovelled on every day when Lucy said “Sophie, isn’t that Niall over there?” Oh bloody hell.

“Errrr… No. No I don’t see him anywhere” I said, trying to sound convincing. “Are you sure? Because that looks an awful lot like him and his girlfriend… what’s her name? Gemma right?” said Millie. I made a mental note to hit her later.

“Nope! I definitely don’t see Niall anywhere” I tried in a last ditch attempt to avoid an awkward convo with Niall and Gemma. As if I would have that kind of luck. “Well you must be blind because that is deffo him” piped up Alice. “OI NIALL” yelled Lucy. I felt like crying.

I looked up to see Anna shooting me a sympathetic look. At least I had someone on my side. By this time Niall had spun round, his romantic coffee break ruined. The initial confusion on his face gradually changed into a cheeky grin. He waved at us.

“Well I think we’re done here” I said, wanting to just leave as soon as possible. I stood up, perhaps a little too quickly as I got major head rush and ended up falling back down, much to the amusement of my friends. I glared at them, there was absolutely nothing funny about this situation.

“You’re right Soph, let’s go” said Alice, sighing as her laughter subsided. As we made our way to the stairs, I made the mistake of glancing over at Niall who beckoned to me. Well that was my speedy exit out the window. I put on my best smile and walked over. “Hey Niall, hey Gemma” I said, trying my hardest to sound cheery. “Hey” they replied in unison. They looked at each other, blushed and giggled. I really was not in the mood for their lovey dovey rubbish.

“So what were you guys doing in town?” Niall asked. Oh the things that accent did to me. “We were just buying our outfits for the party” I blurted. “What party?” Crap! I forgot he wasn’t supposed to know! “Errr… Well you know, in case anyone has a party any time soon. I am all about the organization!” I said, a little half-heartedly. He raised one eyebrow. Damn he was so sexy! Oh my god brain, shut up!!

“Well… I should get going” I said, gesturing in the direction of my friends who were waiting impatiently at the top of the stairs. “Ok. See ya Monday?” I nodded and waved before turning around and walking away. I hate my life.
