Too Close ~ (One Direction Not Famous)

Sophie and Niall have been best friends for years. But at the start of year 11, Sophie sees something different in him. Not only must Sophie cope with her own runaway feelings but she also has to try to keep up with the crazy lives of her other friends.

Will anything ever be simple?

10. Someone Like You

I was slowly becoming immune to Niall and Gemma’s relationship. That doesn’t mean I was happy about it, not by a long stretch. But, if Niall was happy, I would have to deal with it. So, when I walked into the common room one lunchtime a week or so later and Niall wasn’t there, I didn’t bat an eyelid. I went and took my usual place with Lucy to my right and Anna opposite. They all seemed deep in conversation.

“What’s going on?” I asked. “Well, Niall’s birthday is coming up next week…” “DAMN I totally forgot!” I cried. Everyone laughed, I was well known for my terrible memory when it came to birthdays. “Anyways” continued Millie “Louis has a free house so we are going to throw him a surprise party” she squealed, practically bursting with excitement.

“Yeah why not? We gotta live while we’re young right?” grinned Louis. I had only just noticed he was sat with us. “Oh hey Louis” I said “Where’s Hannah?” I asked. He usually spent his lunchtimes with her. As I said Hannah’s name, I noticed Millie tense up a little. Louis simply shrugged before turning to Millie and asking her opinion on carrots.

It suddenly struck me that I had nothing to wear to this party. It was next Friday which meant that I only had 7 days to plan a whole outfit. Stressful times. I turned to Lucy who was sat just staring into space and said “Do you fancy going into town tomorrow?” I asked. “Yeah that would be fab!” she said. But just then, Zayn walked in and made straight for Lucy. He kissed her, which meant I lost what little of her attention I had in the first place. “O-K I guess I will text you deets later then?” I tried, not really expecting much of response. She gave me the thumbs up, still attached to Zayn’s face.

I laughed and turned to Anna to see if she wanted in on our shopping trip. We had just gotten into an animated conversation about which shops would give us the best chance of getting a great outfit when in strolled Harry and George, the guy from tutor. They were laughing hysterically about something or other. Clearly they were already getting on really well.

They saw Anna and me and grinned before making their way over. Harry pulled Anna into a bear hug and tickled her violently. She pushed him off her and slapped him playfully. O why didn’t they just get together and put us out of our misery?

George laughed at their display before coming over and telling me to “budge up”, winking. “What if I don’t want to?” I asked, defiantly crossing my arms. “Then I will make you” he returned, an evil glint forming in his eyes. “I‘d like to see you try…” I started, trying to sound threatening. The effect was somewhat ruined though when George picked me up, sat down where I had been and plonked me down on his lap. I tried to act annoyed but gave in when he started bumping me up and down by moving his legs. At this point I had to laugh. “Stop…. Stop!” I giggled but he continued, cackling like a witch. Finally I stood up with a triumphant “HA!” but that didn’t last long either as I soon realised I was stood in the middle of our group with nowhere to sit. George snorted before grudgingly sliding over a little creating a small area for me to perch.

“Cheers” I said, wiggling into the gap. “So what were you ladies discussing before you were interrupted by two rather handsome lads?” asked George. “What two handsome lads?” I asked, innocently looking around. He stuck his tongue out at me. I laughed and told him “We are going shopping tomorrow for outfits for next Friday” “Why? What’s going on next Friday?” he asked.

“Party. My place. Be there or be square” interjected Louis in some bizarre voice. 2Louis, what on earth was that?” asked Zayn, laughing. “That was my nerd voice” said Louis as if it were the most obvious thing in the world. Millie was in fits of giggles but everyone else just eyed him strangely.

“Yeah… O-k” Said Liam. “Anyways George, it’s a surprise party for Niall’s B-Day so don’t say anything!” added Alice, sternly. George mimed zipping his lips and throwing away the zip. “Good” said Alice, satisfied.

The rest of lunch was pretty similar. Anna and Harry were getting on like a house on fire and Louis had Millie in constant fits of giggles. That is he did, until Katie scurried in and demanded that Louis went to see Hannah immediately. She made a point of glaring at us all before stalking off. Louis followed behind her, mimicking her ridiculous walk and making us all laugh until Katie span around and eyed us suspiciously, at which point we laughed even harder. She stormed off, Louis at her heels. Just before the door shut behind him, he gave us a cheeky salute and winked at Millie. She blushed scarlet and hung her head. However, she soon realised that Louis’ departure left her in a couple sandwich: Lucy and Zayn on one side, Alice and Liam on the other. She looked more than a little uncomfortable. I beckoned to her to come and join me and George. “Thanks” she whispered gratefully to me as she pulled up a chair.

Before we knew it, lunch time was over and we all trooped off towards our various lessons. George reminded me to text him before giving me a parting hug.

For the rest of the day I kept half an ear on what my teacher was saying whilst the back of my mind was filled with thoughts of Niall, Gemma, the party and, oddly enough, George. Apart from Niall, I had never become such good friends with someone in such a short time. It was odd but, when I was with him, all thoughts of Niall became secondary. They were still there but everything seemed less doom and gloom and George made me feel like there was a light at the end of the tunnel. I didn’t have feelings for him or anything; it’s just that there was something different about him. And I liked it.
