Will anything ever be simple?

13. A Night to Remember

The next few days seemed to fly by. What with all the excitement for Friday night, there wasn’t a spare moment where I wasn’t thinking of how to do my hair or what lipstick to wear. I don’t know why, it wasn’t like I had anyone to impress. But no matter how little I wanted to admit it or how stupid it seemed, there was still a little part of me hoping that there was still a chance of Niall falling for me…

I had also tried to change the way I acted around George. Discovering that he may like me had shocked me and my main priority was not to hurt him. The problem was, when I was with him, I kind of forgot and started acting like an idiot. And then every day, I would go home, kicking myself for giving in too easily. I just couldn’t help it. There was something about him that bought it out in me.

Anyway, Friday drew nearer and me and the girls arranged to go over to Alice’s pre-party. My mum was going to drive me there for five and then we would head to Louis’ for about 7 ready for Niall’s arrival at 7:30. He would go to the cinema with Liam and Zayn beforehand. The cover story was that Harry, George, Liam, Zayn, Louis and Niall were going to have a night in. To be honest, I was surprised Niall hadn’t found out, it was all anyone had spoken about for a week!

I had bought Niall’s present a few days ago – tickets to see Justin Bieber on tour! I wouldn’t usually spend that much on someone but Niall was the exception, and he had a proper man crush on the Biebs! So anyway, I had bought him two tickets so he could take someone with him. Of course I hoped he would take me but by now, I was used to disappointment.

It was finally Friday evening and I was waiting for my Mum to drive me to Alice’s. “Mum!” I called. “Coming” came her reply. It was already 5:05 but luckily, Alice only lived a few minutes down the road so I wouldn’t be too late. I was still stood waiting in the hallway waiting for Mum so I glanced in the mirror to see what needed to be done. It was going to take a lot of makeup to sort that out… I groaned.

My mum came skidding out of the kitchen, pulling her coat on and clutching the car keys. I rolled my eyes, she was never on time! “Got everything?” she asked. I did a mental checklist. Dress? Check. Niall’s card with Bieber tickets? Check. Overnight stuff (we were all staying at Alice’s afterwards too)? Check. I grabbed my stuff and headed out into the cold night air.

I climbed into the car and my mum reversed out into the road. Finally we were on the way! “So whose party is it again?” asked mum. I rolled my eyes. She was the kind of parent who would give me the third degree every single time I went out. “It’s Louis house and it’s a surprise party for Niall because it’s his birthday” I told her or the billionth time. “So there will be boys there?” “No mum, we are kicking Louis out of his own house and Niall is not actually going to be at his own party” I replied sarcastically. “All right I get the point!” she said. “Will Louis parents be there?” ok now we were on dangerous ground… “Er… there will be adults there” I answered, not totally lying. Louis’ 19 year old neighbour who had known since birth would be there and he was technically an adult. I thought it was best to leave out the bit about him supplying the alcohol.

My mum seemed satisfied and the rest of the journey passed in silence. Before I knew it, we were pulling up outside Alice’s house and I jumped out the car, party vibes kicking in. “Thanks mum!” I called. “No problem love. Enjoy yourself!” she said, “but not too much” she added. I rolled my eyes jokingly. “Bye mum” I said and she waved as she drove off.

I walked up to the door and knocked, hoping someone would answer quickly as it was near freezing out here. Thankfully, it was only a matter of seconds before the door opened and Alice’s mum poked her head round the door, smiling. “Hey Sophie! Come on in” she said, stepping aside. A huge outburst of hysterical laughter erupted from somewhere above our heads.  Alice’s mum laughed. “In case it’s not obvious enough, they’re upstairs!” I laughed and thanked her before climbing the stairs to Alice’s room.

I opened the door and was hit by a wall of perfume and hairspray. I coughed as it hit my lungs. Call Me Maybe was blasting from the speakers and my friends were singing and dancing along like maniacs! I could tell it was going to be a good night.

“Hey guys!” I called, announcing my presence. “Soph!” they all squealed, hugging me. “Let’s get this party started!” I joked before joining in with the chorus.

About two hours later, we pulled up at Louis house, all as crazy as… well, something really crazy. We all thanked Alice’s mum as we climbed out of the car. She gave us one last “Be sensible!” before telling us to have a good time and driving off.

We walked up the path already able to hear the music blaring out. Anna stopped and did the robot, causing us all to laugh. After ringing the doorbell, it wasn’t long until the door opened to reveal Louis with his arm around Hannah. Millie’s giggles subsided abruptly and her gaze fell to the floor. I threw her a “You’ll be fine” look and squeezed her hand reassuringly.

“Well hello ladies! How are we all this fine evening?” he asked in what I recognised as hid ‘nerd’ voice. “We’re all good thanks! Now let us in before we die of cold!!” I answered. “All right, all right. Keep your hair on!” said Louis, winking and standing to the side. Hannah continued deliberately ignoring us and looking at her obviously fake nails. I sighed at her immaturity before quickly getting inside away from the cold.

I looked to the living room to see a load of people from our year, the year below and the year above dancing whilst others sat around talking. I recognised Katie who was shamelessly flirting with some guy, I think his name was Jack, and he was lapping it up. I also noticed Gemma stood laughing with a group of girls from her year. Her ‘friend’ Becca was sat on the sofa, glued to her phone. “Here you go” said Louis, appearing with a tray of shots. “Do we have to?” I moaned. Vodka was my worst enemy. “Yep” said Louis, pushing the tray closer to me. “Fine” I sighed, taking a deep breath as the fiery liquid burned my throat. I put the glass back on the tray to see my friends all coughing as they too downed a shot. Tonight could get messy… “YAY!” said Louis, putting the tray down and clapping. “Drinks are in the kitchen. Now, if you don’t mind, the dance floor is calling me!” he said, running into the living room and dancing like a loon. We all laughed and headed to the kitchen to get a drink. I went for Malibu and Coke.

I was just putting the lid back on the bottle of Coke when a pair of hands clasped over my eyes. I squealed in shock and tried to prize them of my face but whoever it was was strong. “Guess who!” came a familiar voice. “George!” I whined, “Get off me!” I said. He laughed and released me. I saw Harry jumping on Anna and her turning and yelling “Oi! If my hair is messed up Styles, you are a dead man!”. “Ohh I am quaking!” laughed Harry causing Anna to chase after him. They disappeared into the living room, laughing. If something didn’t happen between them tonight, I would eat my metaphorical hat.

I met my friends eyes to see they were all thinking exactly the same. Then they all nudged each other and said “Bye Soph!” before making a speedy exit. What on earth? Then I realised. They were trying to leave me alone with George. Wonderful. I turned to him to ask if he wanted to go to the living room or something but was stopped short when I realised he was staring at me. I felt the blood rush to my cheeks as I asked “What are you looking at?”. “Nothing. I mean, you look really gorgeous tonight” he said, slightly awkwardly. A voice at the back of my head told me I should ignore this, try to discourage him. But whether it was the already drunk glass of Malibu and Coke or something else, I couldn’t do anything but stand there and blush even redder. I muttered a thanks, scared to make eye contact.

Fortunately enough, Louis chose this moment to turn the music off and hush everybody down. We went out into the hall to hear better. “Ok, everyone listen up!” he shouted. “Zayn just texted me and they are just around the corner so… EVERYBODY HIDE!!”. Cue utter mayhem. Everyone dashed to-and-fro, crouching down behind sofas, pulling curtains in front of them and wiggling underneath tables. There were muffled giggles coming from all over the place. “Now remember, when you hear me say CARROTS, you all jump out and yell surprise” he instructed. “Er Louis, if you don’t mind me asking, why carrots?” I asked, not yet hidden. “I’m sorry Sophie, is it a crime for a boy to like carrots” he asked. More laughter came from random furniture around the ground floor. “Now hide yourself” he ordered.

I looked around, desperately trying to find a hiding place. I was suddenly grabbed around the waist and pulled into a small cupboard under the stairs. “Hey” came George’s voice cheekily in my ear. I giggled as his breath tickled my neck. He was stood a little too close to comfort but there wasn’t exactly a lot of room to manoeuvre so I stayed put. His hands were on my waist, keeping me close to him. Despite my brain yelling at me to resist, my heart raced and my pulse quickened at his close proximity.

I heard the front door open and the sound of the three guys trooping in. “Hey boys, how was the movie?” asked Louis, greeting them. “It was good thanks but I am starving” said the distinct Irish voice that belonged to Niall. “Mate you had a whole large bag of popcorn!” laughed Zayn. “I know, but it takes more than that to fill me up!” trust Niall to still be hungry. “Well I am glad you have room because I have prepared a delicious meal of CARROTS” – this was our cue!
