The Waiting Game

COMPLETED: Harry Potter one-shot. Set in-between Deathly Hallows and the epilogue. Ron and Hermione desperately want a child.

1. Chapter One

The waiting room had seen better days. Narrow chairs were lined up along three of the four walls, the yellowed plastic salient against the green-tinged walls behind. Leaflets lay scattered across low tables full of useless information. A faint smell of bleach and urine permeated the air.

Hermione sat still, muscles tensed, jaw locked into position. In contrast, Ron sat beside her continuously moving restlessly. Her eyes would frequently flick up towards the clock on the wall and back down again. Hands moved from lap, elbows to arm rests and then back to lap.

The worst part was always waiting. Always waiting.

The minutes ticked by slower than ever. Every time the door opened both of them would jump in apprehension. Nurses and doctors bustled patients in and out. Cleaners swamped the floor around them in a murky grey liquid sending fresh waves of disinfectant and human excrement tainted air their way,

Hermione knew she had to relax. There would always be next time. She repeated the mantra over and over in her head until it felt like a buzzing sound beneath her skull instead of words. She had to make herself believe that if this attempt had not worked there would always be time for another chance. She was always the level headed one in the relationship and she had to remain strong for Ron.

The door opened a final time and a short, stout woman stepped out. If her figure was decidedly matronly, her demeanour was not. She had seen the couple here on several occasions and had seen them emerge from the doctor's office multiple times, looking even more crestfallen with each time that passed. She spoke to them in a calm and reassuring tone.

"Mr and Mrs Weasley? Dr Morgan is ready to see you now."

The couple stood silently and followed the nurse down a brightly lit corridor and into the office of the waiting doctor. They sat down wearily in the designated chairs, both eyeing the doctor.

With barely a word the doctor opened the folder and his eyes scanned across the information.

Ron fiddled with the hem of his shirt, pulling it around and around his finger until it was stretched completely from its original shape. He prayed that this time would work. Hermione has been distraught for weeks after last time and he didn't know if her body could physically or emotionally handle another attempt. But then again, he had to make himself believe.

He looked over at Hermione. She was staring morosely at the edge of the desk before them. Her eyes had glazed over and there was no colour in her cheeks. He reached over and squeezed her hand with as much reassurance as he could muster.

The doctor had finished reading the file. Hermione's head shot up to look at him. Her dark eyes burned into his, begging, pleading with him.

"Say yes, please say yes," she whispered, her voice breaking as she spoke.

Ron's hand gripped the edge of the arm rests of the chair in suspense. Too scared to breathe, he waited for the doctor's response.

"The test came out positive. Congratulations! You're going to be parents."

The tears that threatened to leak out of Hermione's eyes now flowed freely.

She was going to be a mother at last.

Hermione and Ron stood looking down at their tiny baby girl.

Rose sighed in her sleep and her eyelids flickered slightly underneath her pale lavender eyelids. Her mouth gaped slightly as she made small suckling noises.

Mother and Father smiled, and exited the room, hand in hand, as silently as possible, not wanting to wake their sleeping child.
