12. Harry and Arianna- In the Middle of Nowhere

“Harry! I told you to fill up the gas tank before we left!” I yelled around the car to him.

“I’m sorry okay? I forgot...” I sighed and walked around to meet him.

“It’s alright... but now what are we supposed to do? We’re stuck out in the middle of nowhere!” I gestured to the cold landscape surrounding us. Harry and I had been dating for almost 4 months now and had decided to take a weekend vacation up to his uncles cabin. We had everything packed and ready to go, except the gas. Now we were stranded on the side of the barren, barely-used highway where no cars were likely to pass by anytime soon.

“I saw a station about 8 miles back...” I slapped his arm.

“Harry! We’re not walking friggin’ 8 miles! It’s almost dark!” I said crossing my arms around my winter vest, which happened to be the warmest thing that I had packed. We watched our breath frost in the air for a while until he finally sighed and looked back to the red truck.

“Arianna!” He imitated my voice amusingly, “We could stay in here tonight, then walk tomorrow,” his voice low in thought- trying to figure out any other options.

“Well how far is the cabin?”

“Not too far I guess... it was about 20 minutes drive away... maybe 2 hours walk then.”

“It’s too dark already, and then we would have to walk back.” I pouted and leaned defeated against the old, paint-chipped automobile.

“Well I’ll be with you, so nothing bad will happen... and we can call a tow truck to pick up the car tomorrow.” I guess he had a good point. I sighed and nodded slowly.

“Just as long as we walk fast, I can’t wait to be in a nice, warm bed.” With that we both let out small chuckles and I fetched my backpack out of the back seat which had my toiletries and clothes in it. Harry clutched his and slung it around his shoulder. The trek along the highway would be a long, chilly one... I just couldn’t wait for it to be over.

An hour, 2 beers, an ignorant car (the first we had seen all night), and a scare from a “Sasquatch” later, we turned onto the long driveway that would lead to the log cabin. I sighed, finally happy that we would be somewhere cozy that didn’t have wolves and hyena’s, or whatever they had out here in the wilderness.  I followed Harry up the front steps that creaked with our footsteps. It looked overrun, but at this point I didn’t care- it was shelter.

“Arianna, it might take a while for the place to heat up since it’s been vacant for so long; but there are blankets and a fireplace that we can use.” I nodded enthusiastically, finding myself walking faster, however much my feet were aching. I nodded as he unlocked the door and walked in. It smelled musty, so I immediately opened a window in a vacant room where fresh air could flow through. The coat hanger was empty as Harry and I slung our vest-jackets onto it and I quickly made my way to the fireplace. Picking up a stick I glared at the uselessness of my own fire-making abilities.

“Harry! How do you make a fire?” I called. Harry’s shadow loomed over me a moment before he crouched down to see what I was doing.

“Well... you need a lighter first,” he laughed. I sighed sarcastically.

“I knew that...” So while he set up the fire I gathered a ton of blankets and piled all of them onto the rustic sofa, quickly climbing underneath all of them. We kept most of the lights off since it was late at night anyways, so that the fire was the greatest energy source at the moment. Harry stood back and watched the flames leap up and dance below the chimney. I smiled brightly as he turned around.

“See? Not so bad.” He quickly shuffled over to me and picked up the mound of blankets before shuffling under them. I adjusted myself so that I was leaning against him with his arms wrapped protectively behind my back.

“I never thought that getting stranded could be so much fun.” Harry responded with a short laugh.

“Especially when you fell into the one pile of snow along the entire stretch of highway.”

“Hey! It tripped me!” I said defiantly, with a hint of sarcasm.

“Yeah, sure.” I huffed and he laughed again. We sat in silence for a moment, watching the fire crackle in front of us.

“How could you have forgotten to fill up the gas tank?”

“I-I uh, just er....” Harry said and blushed. I looked at him quizzically, he only stuttered when he was nervous- what was going on?

“What happened?”

“This morning when you were packing I... got distracted... by you.”

“Oh so this is my fault?” I joked with him.

“Hey I was being serious! You looked so pretty when you woke up I totally forgot about the gas gauge.” My smile remained and a blush spread across my cheeks.

“I guess that’s a good excuse- you’re forgiven.” Harry smiled and rested his cheek onto my hair.

“I love you Arianna.”

“Love you too Haz,” I said right before he tilted my chin up and kissed me softly. I still felt the sparks every time he kissed me and made my knees go weak. When we finally broke apart I rested my head back onto his chest where my eyes closed happily with a wide grin on my face as we both fell asleep in front of the fireplace.
