Twelve-year-old Heather Anderson is the richest, most popular girl in the seventh grade. But when Heather's home is robbed one night, the Andersons are forced to leave their life of luxury and enter an entirely different world.

15. Saying Goodbye

Heather shoved her hands into her furry pockets. She frowned as her father stacked the last suitcase in the trunk. She cringed as he slammed the door shut. "Come on sweetie," her mother waved her over to the car. Heather stood her ground. "Honey?", her mother waved her over again. She gave up and walked as slowly as she could. "Heather Paige Anderson, come," her father said through his lazer-whitened teeth. Oh, no...the full name! Heather sighed and walked to the car. Just as she wrapped her hand around the car door handle, someone tapped her shoulder. Heather turned on the heel of her Ugg to see Dustin smiling. His hands were in his jean pockets. " goodbye?", he grinned sheepishly. Heather couldn't help it. She raised herself to her tippy-toes and kissed him. Quickly, though, in case her parents saw. She lowered herself and stared into his dark, brown eyes. "Goodbye, Heather," Dustin blushed. Heather felt a glob in her throat forming. "Let's not say goodbye...let's say 'see ya later", she forced a smile. "Agreed," he stuck out his nicely-tanned hand. Heather rolled her eyes. She chuckled and shook his hand enthusiastically. There was something in his hand. Something soft. Something velvety. She crinkled her eyebrows and pulled out what ever was in his hand. It was a rose.
