Twelve-year-old Heather Anderson is the richest, most popular girl in the seventh grade. But when Heather's home is robbed one night, the Andersons are forced to leave their life of luxury and enter an entirely different world.

11. A Different Feeling

Heather walks into the tiny dining room and freezes. He. Is. Here. Her heart beat races. Buh-Bum. Buh-bum. She can hear it in her ears. She smoothes down her yoga pants and squeezes into the seat across from Dustin. He looks up from his cereal, his hair in his eyes, "Hey, Anderson." Anderson?! That's what Trevor calls her! But this was different. Heather blushes and looks down at the wood table.  Mrs. Birk, which apparently is this family's last name, walks in and taps Madison's shoulder. "Hey, Maddy! Why don't you take Heather to that Christmas party you're going to? It will be tons of fun!", her brown eyes twinkle with warmth. Madison looks over to Heather, "Would you like to go? It's with my cheerleading team!", she squeals, and her emerald eyes widen. "Ummmm," Heather taps her chin. Just then, Mrs. Anderson walks in, smiling, "Heather would love that!"  Heather grits her teeth. "SURE," she says through her clenched teeth. Madison beams brightly. This is bad. This is bad. It could ruin her reputation. It could ruin her popularity. It could ruin her LIFE! She discreetly eyes Dustin as he scoops up his Cheerios and shoves it into his mouth. He looks up and grins at her. Heather blushes. "You know Madison, here," Mrs. Birk lays her bony hands on Madison's shoulders and talks to fill in the awkward silence, "Cheers for Dustin's football team. They are going, too."  "Really?!", Mrs. Anderson looks genuinely interested. It took some time to collect the information for Heather. Madison's cheerleading squad's party. Dustin is on the football team Madison cheers for. He's going. Trevor is on Dustin's team. He's going.  Oh-no.
