46. You've Given Me a Reason to Stay

I awoke the next morning to the smell of something burning, I jumped up with a start to find the bed empty. I hopped out of bed and ran down the stairs, pass the living room and down the tiny hall to enter the kitchen. I strained to see through the tiny cloud of smoke to see Christian standing in front of the stove with a spatula in his hand, trying to disperse the smoke.
“What the heck are you doing?” I managed to choke out, inhaling a bit of smoke.

“Madison? Get back it's smoky in here! Let me clear it out for a moment.” He told me, swinging the air trying to get rid of the smoke.

I shook my head amused by the sight of Christian with a cooking tool in his hand and headed back up the stairs to brush my teeth and take a shower. The bruises from last night were turning darker and the puncture wounds on my neck were nothing but scabs now, the pain completely gone. When I emerged from the bathroom thirty minutes later, Christian sat on the bed and next to him was a plate of eggs, sausage and toast waiting for me.

“I wanted to make you breakfast in bed, but I smoked you out before I could bring it up the first time apparently. Thought I’d try it a second time, it's been a while since I’ve cooked human food.” He explained, his eyes were a light blue which matched his dark blue shirt he wore today with black pants.

His face was rosy and his skin glowed like it did last night. His hair was untidy as usual but to me he was a perfect image of perfection, I smiled at him appreciating his gesture.

“Thank you, everything looks and smells wonderful!” I gushed, taking a seat next to him picking up the plate of food. I waited for him to look away so I could eat but I realized he was waiting for me to take the first bite, I did and as I thought it would, it tasted wonderful.

“I guess cooking runs in your family. First, Elizabeth and now you, if I continue to eat with your family I’m going to get fat. Is that your guys’ plan, fatten me up then eat me?” I joked.

“Not funny.” He said frowning.

“Oops, eating and shutting up now.” I said, which earned me Christian turning the frown upside down.

“I stepped out this morning and went to the local grocery store. Nathanial says that if we are going to do any blood donating for these next two days then I need to keep replenishing your energy levels and give you nutrients.” Christian explained.

"I'm not leaving for New York, I'm staying here?" I asked, innocently. Though I had the sneaking suspicion that Christian knew I'd planned on never going to New York anyway.

"Yes. I don't believe Katherine will be able to find you here."

"Why not? She could track my scent and kill me easily."

"If this was a normal house then yes she could but this ground is sacred. My cottage and Emilia's cottages are encased in a protective fields. These fields were done by a Hoodoo Priest when we moved here. Katherine is familiar in Hoodoo but it would take her a long time to pierce it and find your location." He explained to me.

"Okay, good news to hear. Penny for your thoughts?” I asked him.

“Oh, it's nothing. Does the food taste good?”

“Yes, thanks again. So is this what a girl has to do to get delicious breakfast in bed? Donate some blood?” I joked once again. Christian smiled at me, shaking his head.

“I don’t know what I must’ve done to deserve such a wonderful girlfriend.” Christian whispered tucking a piece of damp hair behind my ear and planting a kiss on my forehead. I nearly choked on my food I was startled by his expression of affection, I smiled brightly at him.

“Not trying to ruin this perfect moment but we only have a couple days before you face Katherine I think you’re going to have to feed off of me more than once over these next two days.”

“Madison-” Christian started to say but hesitated and sighed before continuing, “You’re right, I am but how about you call your mother first? She called you last night, I answered and told her that you were sleeping but you’d call her today.”

“Okay, fine.” I agreed. He left me to retrieve my cell phone. My mother answered her cell phone on the first ring.

“Are you okay? Where are you?” She demanded.

“Hi, I’m fine. Sorry about last night, I’m upset and not sure if I will come home. I only wanted to tell you that and I won’t be phoning or answering your phone call for a while until I can come to terms with the situation. Love you, bye.” I hung up on her, regretfully.

That was my last intention to cause my mother any more pain but in case there was one of Katherine’s goonies eavesdropping I had to keep myself distanced from my mother in order to keep her safe. Looking at Christian’s clenched jaw, and tensed facial expression it didn’t take much to figure out he didn’t want to start the blood donating. He sat on the edge of the bed next to me, I reached out turning his face to face me.

Christian's blue eyes did a long sweep over my body, which made me blush and feel overexposed, since I wore only a tank top with boy shorts. My breathing increased as my heart beat sped up, his eyes continued to glance over my body before settling on my eyes. We stared at each other, uncertainty clung in the air as we both contemplated on how to proceed. We didn’t have to wait very long before sheer desire managed to bring our lips together and natural chemistry pushed us closer together. As usual I wound up being on the bottom as Christian kissed me, trailing his kisses towards my neck before planting gentle kisses on the scabs.

As I predicted he bite me hard, pressing my hands deeper into the bed as the feeling of euphoria spread along my body. Delirious with pleasure, I escaped his death grips on my hands and tangled them in his hair. Christian tore his mouth from my neck and ran his hands underneath my shirt. My back arched and my leg wrapped around his torso locking him against me. His hand ran down my thigh, making me gasp for air. Not thinking I searched for his mouth with my own, tasting the coppery and salt elements that clung to his lips but I did not care. He tried to pull away but I held his head in place kissing him.

I broke our kiss, intent on removing his shirt which to my surprise he’d let me. Christian, once again, turned his attention to my neck, and began to feed. Stronger waves of euphoria rode through me, heightening my senses and giving me energy I never experienced before.
Christian broke from feeding once more to stare at me, sitting on top of me staring at my body his eyes lingering on me. My chest rose up and down due to the excitement building up in my body. My eyes also lingered on him as his chest muscles glistened lightly from a light sweat-that must’ve been from the heat coming from my blood. A rosy pink color covered his body, everything about him had more color to him than I’d seen ever since I’d met him. His skin was flawless, not a single wrinkle or crease. Everything about him was perfect and…he was all mine I thought possessively. I smiled cockily, and triumphantly.

After a few moments he was full and spent, and so was I. We both laid on the bed next to each other unable to move, both of us covered in a light coating of sweat. My breathing struggled to return to normal as I shook off the last ripples of ecstasy, when I regained control of myself I turned on my side to face Christian. He laid still as if he were a statue. I scooted closer to him, planting a gentle kiss on his chest, he raised his arm over my head pulling me in closer on him. My head rested on his warm chest.

“Why are you here? I mean you could be with anyone, or anywhere in the world. Why do you stay in Maple Falls?”

“I once thought of this place as home but now you're my home and you've given me a reason to stay. You've given me the only reason to stay.” He told me squeezing my shoulders. I smiled at him.

“We are almost the same body temperature.” I commented.

“Yes, almost, are you okay love?”

I raised my head to stare at Christian and gasped.

“What?” Christian asked alarmed.

“Your eyes…they’re not blue or brown anymore. They’re sliver…like…Katherine’s." I sputtered in shock.

“Impossible.” He told me dismissively.

“Go look if you don’t flipping believe me.” I challenged.

Christian shook his head in doubt but did as I said going into the bathroom to stare in the mirror. I followed him as he stared in the mirror horror stricken, his face transformed into one of anger. He let out one of his infamous snarls catching me off guard.

I jumped back in fear, “What the heck is wrong with you?” I demanded.
“Damn it, I’m sorry.” He told me and before I knew it he was sitting back on the bed. I was used to Christian being able to move faster than myself but he moved in less time it would take a person to blink. I'd never seen him move that fast, in fact I barely saw him move.

“I’m not comprehending what the problem is Christian.”

“I have silver eyes, that’s the problem. Katherine has silver eyes…do you know why? Because she’s powerful from feeding off of human blood for many years, I’ve only had your blood for a few days yet I’m as powerful as she is. Something isn’t right…how can I be this powerful from only drinking your blood?” He questioned.

Personally I didn’t understand what the big deal was, or why he was upset in the first place. This was good news to me.
“Who cares?! You’re powerful and that is all that matters.” I told him.

“I’m drinking too much, that’s the only logical explanation. Nathanial can’t be right, I’m drinking too much from you.” He mumbled almost incoherently. Was he going crazy I began to wonder, could vampires even turn crazy?

I tried again to talk sense into him, “It’s okay, I feel fine. You can’t be drinking too much, this is good news it means you’re nearly ready.”

Christian thought long and hard going over any more reasons to doubt me before slumping his shoulders defeated, “You’re right love, sorry for the scare.”

I smiled at him, and wrapped my arms around him, “Let’s get out of here. We’ve been in this house too long, we’re getting cabin fever or something let’s go into town and do a bit of shopping. I know- I know how can I think of shopping at a time like this?”

“No, you’re right, we’re been wound up tightly about everything. It’s been one problem after another let’s be semi-normal teenagers today. We’ll go into town and pick up a couple of things…maybe a tiny television? If you’re going to be here for a while I need to keep you entertained.” He suggested.

I sighed happily. Shopping turned out to be a nice temporarily cure to relieve some our stress levels. Much to my delight Christian did keep to his word by purchasing a television for the living room. We decided to stop by his parents house before returning back to his cottage. Nathanial and Elizabeth were shocked to see Christian's silver eyes but understood the necessity of the situation. However, Emilia on the other hand, appeared more disgusted with the sight of Christian and me than I’d ever seen her. Even Lucas didn’t appear to be keen on the idea of me donating blood to Christian but I didn’t care what they thought.

I only cared that Christian was stronger. I ate dinner there finally getting to taste those yummy tacos Elizabeth made for me, while Christian and Nathanial went up to his study and talked. Christian didn’t say a word about what he discussed with Nathanial as we drove back to the cottage and in order not to ruin our good time I didn’t bother to ask. I finished unpacking the rest of my things, and walked downstairs to find Christian nowhere in sight. I tried to sense his whereabouts but for the first time I couldn’t make out where he was. It was almost as a veil was being pulled over my eyes all, I could see was the darkness. He must’ve went outside to the car I thought, I went out the front door, stepping out into the night.

The weather was cold as light snowflakes fell from the sky, I stood outside staring up at the moonlit sky. The moon appeared to be close to Earth, so close that if I’d climbed the tallest tree I was positive I would be able to touch its surface. Standing captivated by it’s beauty I never noticed him behind me until I felt his arms wrap around my waist, I twisted to get a better look at Christian. He took my breath away as he often seemed to do, his silver eyes sparkled in the moonlights rays.

I wanted to be wrapped in his arms forever and never break from his embrace. I raised my head and stood on my tip toes meeting Christian half way for a kiss. He kissed me softly, I shouldn’t have gotten myself carried away but I did. The taste of copper and salt filled my mouth before I felt the pain, I let out a small cry. Christian pushed me hard back towards the house, causing me to stumble over myself and fall to the ground. Before fully comprehending what had just happened, Christian yanked me from the ground, his eyes wild I let out a gasp in shock. His icy silver eyes blazed with fury.
