36. Moonlight Reveals A Dark Knight (pt 2)

Disbelief filled me as I continued to watch Nathaniel, Christian and Lucas talk to each other. Was Lucas the culprit all along in these murders and were the Watson’s covering for him? Did Lucas realize he was behind the killings? My head began to spin with all of the possibilities that would explain why the Watson’s would cover for Lucas. I placed my fingertips on the glass trying to get a better look, a tiny gasp escaped my lips as I finally accepted what I was seeing was real.

Unexpectedly, Christian whipped his head around and looked in my direction, causing me to jump back in fear. I returned to the bed, hopping in and covering myself in the sheets. I knew I only had a matter of seconds to compose myself before he came to check on me. I prayed that he didn't see me. Sure enough, about fifteen seconds later, Christian knocked on the door.

“Come in.” I whispered.

Christian creaked open the door, peeking inside first then stepped in. I stared at him, nervous but determined to find out the truth about Lucas. He held my gaze as he tried to decide where to position himself, he finally decided to stand next the window where I myself stood moments ago. I clasped my hands in my lap, thinking on how to proceed in my questioning. I prayed that my suspicions were incorrect and that it hadn’t been Lucas involved in the homicides. I hoped that I knew the Watson family as much I thought I did.

“It’s moments like this, I wish I could hear what you’re thinking about.” Christian told me a hint of irritation in his voice.

“Please tell me what I saw wasn’t real. Tell me that the animal that attacked me months ago wasn’t Lucas. Tell me he’s not behind the attacks and that your family isn’t protecting him.” I pleaded, desperate for him to calm my fears.

“I can’t tell you everything…but I can tell you that Lucas isn’t behind the murders. Anything else you will have to ask him, his secrets aren’t mine to tell.” Christian told me.

"Was he the one that attacked me in the woods?" I asked him, tensed.

Christian sighed before nodding his head. I lost it.

“He tried to kill me or have you forgotten? He nearly killed you! All this time you've known about him, and all this time he's done nothing but smile in my face as if he was my friend. You've kept quiet this whole time and never said a word! Tell me what he is right now!”

“I can’t say, all I can say is that Lucas is a good guy despite his abnormal condition. He’s still the Lucas that played basketball with us, and he is still a brother to me. I know that you are upset about this but trust me, he wouldn't have killed you or me, that night he was curious and things escalated. Please hold off before you mention anything. He knows that you saw him tonight, he will come forward when he‘s ready. If you trust me then you can trust him. ” Christian said.

"And I do trust you, but now I'm questioning myself why. You kept this from me Christian. All this time you've known my fears of this creature...of Lucas and you never said a word." I told him, hurt.

"I only wanted to keep you safe, if I told you, I feared that you would-"

"Run off and tell someone?" I finished for him, bitterly.

"No, that you wouldn't give him a chance. To get to know the real him. I know I screwed up, and I'll make it up to you but for now please trust me." He pleaded.

"Okay but no more keeping me in the dark. With holding something as crucial as this is just like lying." I gave in. I didn't like the fact he withheld this information from me but I knew his heart was in the right place. The look on my face showed Christian I wasn't fooling around, he nodded his head in agreement.

"How are you feeling now?” He asked me, the moonlight highlighting his pale face.

“I’m fine. I can see why a vampire’s bite would be addicting. I've never felt like that in my life. I noticed how your appearance changed when you drank my blood.” I told him.

“Yes, human blood does that to my kind…” He muttered distracted.

"You look younger than you usually do."

"Yes, it is amazing what human blood does. Physically, mentally it does help. But it strengthens the beast within and anytime that beast can take over. Its why I stick mostly to animals, helps keep the monster at bay." He muttered once more. I knew the subject was making him uncomfortable.

“Is the link broken?" I asked him.

“Nathaniel thinks so. It'll basically be a waiting game. If we can have physical contact overtime and not lose energy like we did we'll know for sure. Nathaniel will observe us and make sure. But we have to make sure to tell him if we have symptoms again. I'm glad that we fixed this problem before anything serious happened.” Christian told me.

“Did I taste good?” I blurted out.

Christian's mouth twitched, “Very much. More than I planned for it was hard for me to stop I wanted every drop of you but then I realized if I did that then I would lose you, losing you would be the death of me. I would have nothing to live for if I ever lost you.”

His words held such tender passion in them and before I could say anything back to him, he was leaning over me. He planted a soft kiss on my forehead and I went back to sleep.
