43. Haunted (pt 3)

I rose from the couch and walked through the kitchen to the basement door where Elizabeth stood there with a plate of food. She knew where I was going and put the food in the microwave for me for later. I opened the door and walked down the stairs careful not to fall down them. Along the descent of stairs I passed photographs of people from different time periods that he had encountered at some point in his life. Smiling faces of strangers who were dead now but remained alive in this moment, it made me wonder who they were and what happened to them. I made a mental note to ask him one day, if I ever had the chance.

“You think I’m a monster.” Christian stated, once I stood behind him as he stood before one of his oil paintings.

“No, maybe that’s what you were a long time ago. I don’t see any monster here I see an angel.” I told him quietly.

“It was a long time ago. I never wanted you to know that information, but it’s all true. I killed them, and I had a thirst for power and domination at some point but it was a dark and short time.” He told me.

“I know but how could you?” I asked him mystified, “Did you feel nothing for your victims?”

“Not at the time, but I did and I do. I carry that guilt everyday with me. Who do you think these people are in my photographs and in my paintings? I can still see their faces. Even if I do not dream I am haunted by their faces everyday!” His voice broke and immediately I hugged him from behind, but he pulled away from me.

“I’m sorry. I didn’t know…but you have to know I didn’t mean to flinch because nothing has changed for me. I am still in love with you, Katherine’s words and your past don’t change that.” I told him.

“It changes everything.” He muttered.

“Not for me.” I argued.

“I am a murderer. I am responsible for the deaths here now, if I would’ve sensed her earlier I could’ve prevented this! If I had died when I was supposed too, none of this would‘ve happened!” He bellowed in painful frustration, sinking to the floor in agony. His eyes blazed bright blue.

“No, you mustn’t think like that. Katherine is responsible for this and you will do those souls justice when you kill her! With her dead you can save others too.” I cried, falling to the floor wrapping my arms around him once more.

Christian wrapped his arms around my waist and buried his face in my shoulder. I held him for another minute before he released me and stared at me in the face.

“And what about the justice for my victims? Here I am alive, still young and in love. They are dead, forgotten from the world, where is the justice? Now do you see? I am a condemned man.” Christian whispered.

“Your remorse and regret is their justice. Look around you, you've tortured yourself for years. You’ve had these paintings a long time, staring at them day after day tearing yourself apart. You’ve been suffering all these years, given up your old ways, and have been on the road for redemption, even saving my life.” I whispered back.

He stared at me thinking hard, pondering over what I said.
“Do you truly believe that is enough? Did you mean what you said? Nothing changes?” He asked me softly.

“It's enough for now, there is nothing left you can do. I meant what I said, nothing changes for me. I knew what I was getting into maybe not in that much detail but I knew. Yet, here I am because of you and I love you.”

“As I love you, I never meant-”

“I know.” I told him, “Tell me the truth: is everyone going to walk away from this alive? How powerful is Katherine, is it really going to take all of you to kill her?”

“We will all walk away from this if we play our cards right. I know Lucas will ask his pack for help but I doubt they will, they really don’t like vampires. But we shall see I guess, the two men will be a challenge but I want Lucas and Emilia on Viktor. That will free up Nathanial and Elizabeth to take Lawrence and then…”

“Then you will go against Katherine…by yourself. That’s your whole plan isn’t it? Go up against her alone keep everyone out the way.” I finished for him, trying to be strong, but he wasn’t fooled. I let go of him standing up, staring down at him.

“It has to be me. My family or you shouldn’t have to die because of me.” He told me fiercely.

“Damn it, you can’t make that decision, your family would die for you and so would I!” I told him.

“I won’t allow that. Don’t talk that way, you have so much to live for-”

“And so do you!” I argued.

“I’ve lived long enough, I’ve never been this happy being with you has made my life complete and if I die, at least I die a happy man.”

“Don’t talk that way. Why? Why can’t they help? You know they aren’t going to stand by and let it just happen.” I told him.

“I know but they’ll be distracted. I am the only one that can kill Katherine, I know her better than my family which gives me an advantage. And I will not allow her to kill me without bringing her down to Hell with me. It has to be this way.” He insisted.

“No…I won’t allow you to do this.” I said, determined.

“Madison, please.” Christian begged me, his eyes locked with mine and I knew he was right, it had to be him but how could I agree to my boyfriend possible getting himself killed? I bit my lip trying to think-I had three days to try and prevent his death from happening. If Katherine sensed that Christian was more powerful than her than maybe she’d back off. She believed only she had the power to return him to his original strength, but there had to be another way. The only conclusion I knew popped in my head, but I had to make sure Christian and I were alone. I didn’t want his family to know about anything.

“Okay.” I said simply.

“Okay?” He asked me suspicious.

“I know you won’t die, promise me.” I demanded.

“Madison-” He started.

“Promise me you won’t die.” I repeated firmly.
He didn’t say another word before he squeezed my hand with his, “I promise.”

“Thank you. Do you think it’s okay enough if we go back to my house, I have to make sure my mother is safe. I'm sure by now Katherine knows where I live. I have to keep my mother safe from all of this.”

“Okay, so you will agree to leave? It’ll be like a little vacation and I will come get you when this is all over.” Christian promised.

“Where will I go?”

“New York, I have a friend there who I trust with my own life. She’s really nice and is also a um…vegetarian I guess you could call her.” He informed me, which I couldn’t help but feel a twinge of jealousy, I mean how many girls did he have as friends? I pushed the jealousy away, I wouldn’t be truly leaving Maple Falls anyway. For once, I was happy he couldn’t read my mind, some things were better left to be secret. I knew he’d be mad if he knew what I was planning but I wouldn’t let him take on Katherine by himself, and if he did, it would have to be over my dead body.
