7. Class Fights and First Dates

The next day went by without much incident, though news had traveled around about how I turned down Eric Harding twice. Christian become more irritated in school than ever before, he reminded me of a volcano ready to erupt. Emilia continued to give me death looks whenever she could manage, and I was used to have a dirty look contest with her. Lillian had managed to get a hold of me by calling me on a blocked number and tried to explain why she never told me about her conversation with Christian. We came to the agreement that I didn’t need to know and that she was forgiven. However, our agreement didn't stop Jensen from being aggravated about the whole situation but otherwise excitement was building up within my friends about our trip on Saturday. Friday came faster than I had expected, which meant only one more day before our trip. Morning classes went by fast that I didn’t even realize it was almost lunch time.

I decided to go to my locker to place my books in there that way I wouldn’t have to carry them to lunch. I noticed Christian standing at his own locker down the hall from mine, waiting for his sister I assumed. I closed my locker only to see Eric Harding standing in front of me with his jock gang. I sighed, I was not in the mood for this type of drama today. The hallways were filled with kids getting out of class on their way to lunch which made me feel uneasy, whatever Eric had to say I didn’t want to hear in front of half of the school. I saw Dean, Jensen, Lilly, and Katie heading over to my locker to investigate what Eric was up to. I waited impatiently, tapping my foot waiting for Eric to say something. Eric eyes blazed with anticipation I was positive he wanted there to be an audience in whatever he was going to do. If it was a fight he wanted I wouldn’t back down, I’d seen Eric bully kids before and it would be a cold day in Hell before I become one of those kids. Eric smiled maliciously at me, people were stopping noticing the two of us.

“You think you’re hot stuff now because you put on a few pounds of makeup? Let me tell you something I was only interested in getting into your pants because I thought you’d be easier than Jocelyn. Now I realize that a girl like you is nothing but a tease Madison. You’re nothing but a sad virgin who wouldn't know how to handle a real man.” Eric sneered, behind him, Eric’s friends hollered with laughter.

My anger boiled to the surface, not only was Eric insulting me but he was insulting my best friend.

“Eric, you wish you were man enough to be with me or Jocelyn. The only shot you’ve ever had with me was in your dreams and the same goes for Jocelyn. So go screw yourself which I am sure you’re used to. As I hear it in the girls' locker room there isn't much to handle.” I spat out.

With that being said I tried to walk past him when he grabbed me roughly by the arm, spinning me around. Three things happened simultaneously: Dean and Jensen ran forward yelling at Eric angrier than I've seen them, someone pulled me out Eric’s grip and pushed me into the growing spectators. As I struggled to see who pulled me away, I saw Christian crushing Eric against the lockers. Christian had Eric in a death grip held up against the lockers while Dean and Jensen were facing Eric’s jock gang, ready to fight. My heart pounded I didn’t know what to do, somehow I was more worried about Eric’s safety than Christians‘. I stepped forward trying to get closer to Christian who had his arm under Eric’s throat. Christian’s face was contorted in rage but he wasn’t even breaking a sweat controlling Eric who was blue in the face trying to twist out of his grip.

“Don’t you ever come near Madison or her friends again, if you ever disrespect her again next time I promise you you’re going to wish you were never born. As for you ever being alone with Madison, forget it! You even think a dirty thought about her from now on and I promise that’ll be the last thought you ever have. Understood?” Christian hissed at Eric.

“Yes!” Eric managed to choke out.

Christian let Eric go, who slumped down the lockers onto the floor, clearly out of breathe and scared. I swallowed hard, everyone had their eyes on Christian and Eric, who was gasping for air. I turned my attention to Dean and Jensen who stood blocking Eric’s jock gang, slowly release their flank. The halls were silent as if time had frozen, until a loud bellow cracked through the air.

“What is going on here? For anyone not directly involved in this incident, move it or I will have you in detention so fast your heads will spin! Get to class right now!” Mr. Rinehart was racing down the halls, his veins bulging out of neck.

The crowd dispersed as fast as it had formed. Left standing there was only Christian, Jensen, Dean, Eric, and me. My mouth went dry ,I was not the type of student to get detention. I prayed for Eric to admit the truth, TELL HIM THE TRUTH ERIC! I yelled in my head, willing him to confess. I opened my mouth to speak when Eric spoke,

“It’s my fault, Mr. Rinehart I started a fight with Madison and grabbed her. Christian and the boys only came to defend her.” He confessed.

“Is this true?” Mr. Rinehart's gaze fell upon me.

I didn’t want to get Eric in trouble but I rather he did than me and my friends. “Yes sir, but I don’t want to go the Principal’s office or anything. It was a heated discussion that got out of hand."

“Okay fine. Here’s what’s going to happen Mr. Harding you come with me, you will receive detention with me today after school. No complaints you’re lucky I don’t report this to the Principal, come on. As for rest of you get to class or I will see to it that you join Mr. Harding.” Mr. Rinehart barked at us.

He waited for Eric to get up from the floor, then turned on his heel, stalking away. Eric looked at me, sighed, then left to follow behind Mr. Rinehart. I stared blankly at their retreating figures, not quite sure what to do with myself. I felt a hand on my shoulder to see Dean standing there next to me.

“You okay MJ?”

“Yeah, I’m fine. Thank you, I never expected Eric to be such an asshole that’s all.” I said.

“He better never come near you again, or Christian won’t be the only one to break his face.” He growled.

“Damn right!” Jensen agreed.
The mention of Christian’s name made us turn our attention to him. Christian stared back at us, unsure of himself.

“No man should ever put his hands on a woman. Ever.” He stated.

“Man you had him in a death grip. You learn that off of Ultimate Championship Fighting or something?” Jensen asked, impressed.

“Something like that.” Christian replied.

“I figured, or some of those moves from-” Jensen started to say.

“Maybe we should get to lunch guys.” Dean suggested.

“Okay, fine. Let’s go, Mr. Rinehart will be looking for all of us later on anyway to make sure we’re in class. I never seen him that pissed off before.” Jensen said.

“You guys go on. I’ll be there in a minute.” I said to my friends.

Dean glanced at me and Christian, I gave him a quick nod of the head signaling that I’d be okay. That was one thing I loved about Dean, he always looked out for my well being. I watched my friends leave, as soon as Christian and I were alone, I broke the silence.

“Thank you.” I said, gratefully.

“You’re welcome.” Christian said.

“Why did you do that Christian? You could’ve got expelled, or worse.”

“I couldn’t let him get away with that kind of disrespect and when he had the nerve to grab you. I snapped. It probably wasn‘t the smartest move to do it with an audience but I won‘t stand by and let any boy grab a girl. Especially if that girl is you.”

I heard the emphasis in his voice when he mentioned me, the way he said it brought me back to that day in my kitchen when I knew he would never let anything bad happen to me. There was more I could’ve said, or should’ve said but I didn’t. Instead, I went over to Christian and hugged him, I knew I startled him because he froze in my arms. I didn’t release him and after an awkward second he carefully placed his arms around my waist, embracing me. We remained entwined in each other’s arms. I noticed how cold Christian’s body was but it was amazing that despite his lack of warmth, the sheer feel of him made my body temperature soar.

I squeezed tighter and as I did, Christian did the same. The hug would seem longer than necessary to an observer but to us, it didn’t last long enough. With an expression I couldn’t describe besides a look of regret, Christian let me go. I smiled meekly and because I didn’t want to ruin the moment I remained silent as I watched him walk away from me. As I was left alone in the hallway I couldn’t help but wonder if staying away from each other was emotionally taking it’s toll on Christian than he led on.
