The Only Exception

It's Zayn Malik before One Direction. Zayn and Lucy develop a relationship despite their popularity statuses. They love each other, but is it worth losing friends and family? Will their struggle to cope with outside forces end up in vain or will they have the happily ever after?

10. The Only Exception

“What do you want to do when you grow up,” Lucy asked me.

“I’ve always wanted to be an English teacher,” I confessed.

“I thought you didn’t like school,” she said.

“I don’t, but I like English. It’s not that bad. My teacher always likes my poems and insightful thoughts.”

“So is that what you will strive for?”

“Not really,” I said. “I’ve always liked to sing.”

“Oh, so the mysterious Zayn is also a singer. Who would’ve known,” she chuckled. She slipped her hand into mine before continuing. “Could you please sing me something?” she asked.

I hesitated. “I don’t know if I should…”

“Oh, pretty please with a cherry on top,” she begged.

“Only one song,” I said.

“Or maybe two,” she smiled. I laughed and held her hand tighter.

When I was younger, I saw my daddy cry and curse at the wind, he broke his own heart and I watched, as he tried to reassemble it

And my momma swore that she would never let herself forget

And that was the day that I promised I’d never sing of love, if it does not exist

But darling, you are the only exception, you are the only exception, you are the only exception…”

Lucy suddenly stood up and then she held her hands out to help me up. “Continue singing,” she said, as she began to dance.

I chuckled, “I’m sorry, but I don’t dance.”

“Well, aren’t I the exception?” she asked. I smiled and began dancing with her; something I really didn’t like, but now seemed natural with Lucy.

Maybe I know somewhere deep in my soul that love never lasts

And we’ve got to find other ways to make it alone, and keep a straight face

And I’ve always lived like this, keeping a comfortable distance

And up until now I had sworn to myself that I’m content with loneliness because none of it was ever worth the risk

Well you are the only exception, you are the only exception, you are the only exception…” I stopped abruptly and Lucy jerked to a stop. “You are the only exception,” I whispered.

She smiled and then went on her tippy toes to reach my lips. She kissed me cautiously at first, as though she feared this was wrong, but I pulled her closer by the waist so she wouldn’t go. She pulled me closer by the head and our kiss grew more and more passionate. It was better than I ever imagined and I couldn’t believe my luck as we continued kissing. Lucy pulled herself away, breathless but still smiling.

“Zayn,” she gasped. I nodded, hoping she wasn’t regretting the kiss. “Zayn,” she said again, much calmer this time. “I think about you all the time. Is that wrong?” she giggled.

I grinned and picked her up by the waist, spinning her round and round as she laughed in delight. I set her down, then, and whispered, “I think about you all the time too,” and then kissed her again.

We pulled away, eventually, and then we looked into each other’s eyes. She burst into a fit of giggles and I couldn’t help but laugh as well.

We spent the rest of the day sitting and looking at the scenery and talking and laughing, and sometimes I’d manage to sneak in a kiss or two. But whenever I think about this day, I always remember her hand always begin in mine, as though she would never let go.
