The Only Exception

It's Zayn Malik before One Direction. Zayn and Lucy develop a relationship despite their popularity statuses. They love each other, but is it worth losing friends and family? Will their struggle to cope with outside forces end up in vain or will they have the happily ever after?

21. Just a Small Surprise

Lucy's P.O.V.

I followed Mike as we walked down the stairs. Mom said that Dad had some important news. I didn’t think much of it since I was pretty pissed yet confused at Zayn’s behavior today. I couldn’t text him or talk to him even if I wanted to because my phone was acting weird. I glanced over at Mike, who was also getting frustrated with his phone.

“Great news,” my dad exclaimed. Me and Mike eyed him cautiously. ‘Great news’ from dad never meant actual great news. I glimpsed at mom, who was also smiling.

“What?” Mike asked, already bored with the conversation.

“We’re going on vacation tomorrow!” he beamed.

I lifted my eyebrows in surprise. “Vacation?” I repeated. “Dad, it’s the middle of the semester. Who goes on vacation at this time of year?”

“We do. I got a raise, so I figured why not take a surprise vacation with my family?” he grinned. I liked the idea of going on a vacation. I so desperately wanted to get away from here, especially from my ex-friends.

“Where to?” Mike asked, suddenly paying attention.

“Los Angeles, California,” my mom answered for him. I smiled. I had always dreamed of going to LA.

“Are you serious?” Mike exclaimed. “That’s so cool.”

“Yeah, I knew you guys would love it,” my dad continued. “I know it’s a little, well a lot, shocking that we’re going tomorrow, but I wanted it to be more spontaneous than planned. I don’t like to think myself that old, you know,” he joked and we all laughed. I liked this. After the big fight, our family was full of tension, and now these plans were bringing us back together.

“I’ve already began packing up some of your things,” my mom said, standing up. “But I assume you guys will think I picked out the wrong clothes or whatever. The luggage bags are in the hallway closet,” she said, getting us off of the couch. “Hurry, we only have a few hours to get ready.”

“Oh, and one more thing,” my dad said before we reached the steps. “I want this to be a family trip, so I would like the two of you guys to turn in your cell phones.”

“Are you kidding?” I asked incredulous.

“I’m serious. If you guys behave well, I might give them back to you in LA,” he said with a hand outstretched.

Mike and me looked at each other confused, and then Mike shrugged. He gave dad his phone. “It seems to have stopped working anyways,” he declared.

“Oh, we’ll get that fixed, don’t worry,” he said calmly as I handed him my phone as well. I followed Mom and Mike as we climbed back up the stairs. I grabbed a luggage bag from the closet and then went into my room. I began pulling out all my swimsuits while I thought about the beaches and the cute guys I would see…and then I thought about Zayn. I picked out all my shorts while I thought about all the rays I would catch… and then I thought about Zayn. I packed some sunglasses, thinking about the possible celebrities I might see… and then I thought about Zayn.

I sighed and then sat on my bed. I wanted to see Zayn. I knew it was just about impossible to see him now before I left for this ‘spontaneous’ vacation. I didn’t have a phone, I didn’t remember his number, I couldn’t contact him on the internet, and I was still grounded, so there was no way I could leave the house.

My mom came in then with some cookies. “Would you like some?” she asked. I nodded and took one. “So, are you excited?”

“Oh yeah,” I said, taking a bite of the cookie. “I’m going to be the only tanned chick at school in the middle of winter when I come back,” I joked.

“Mhm,” my mom agreed.

“I can’t believe it though. I didn’t think you had it in you to be this random,” I said.

“Oh Lucy, this trip has always been planned,” she smiled. “We just needed to find the time to take it.”

“Yeah,” I agreed.

“Ok,” she said, standing up. “I guess I’ll leave you to finish packing then.” I nodded and she walked out of the room. I filled the suitcase to the brim and then I went to grab another one. As I was almost finished with that one, I found even more things to pack up. I was running out of room and was about to grab another case when my dad spotted me.

“Hey sport,” he smiled. “Don’t worry if you can’t fit everything in. You can always get it later, right,” he said.

I nodded and he patted my shoulder.

I really want to see Zayn, I thought to myself.
