The Only Exception

It's Zayn Malik before One Direction. Zayn and Lucy develop a relationship despite their popularity statuses. They love each other, but is it worth losing friends and family? Will their struggle to cope with outside forces end up in vain or will they have the happily ever after?

I looked at Mike for a long time after he explained what happened between Lucy and her parents. Inside, I was boiling. My one chance at happiness and I just had to kiss it goodbye.

“I don’t want her to go through all that for me,” I said, desperately wishing I didn’t have to say the following words. “So I guess that it’s over,” I whispered, trying hard to hold back the tears.

“Wow, Lucy knows you better than me,” Mike said. I glanced at him curiously. “She wanted me to tell you that she doesn’t want you to give up. That she wanted this just as much as you did, and she really hopes you won’t give up.”

I shook my head. “But it’s not worth it if she’s fighting with her parents and being insulted by her own friends,” I said. “I don’t want to give up, but it’s the only sensible thing to do.”

“Hey, remember you promised that you wouldn’t hurt her,” Mike said seriously.

“But I’m going to hurt her either way,” I retaliated. “I know what I promised, and I don’t want to break it, but I think it’s too late for that.”

“No, our parents and her friends are hurting her right now, but she needs you now more than ever. What would really hurt her is if you backed out now,” Mike declared, and with that, he stormed out of the house.

After thinking about it for ages, I finally decided to text Lucy. I had to get to the bottom of this and had to talk to her as soon as possible. Mike mentioned that she was grounded, so it couldn’t happen tonight.

I’m really sorry about the mess I’ve put you in, I texted. A few moments later, she replied.

No Zayn, it’s not your fault that everyone else doesn’t understand.

But I don’t want you to get hurt.

I won’t as long as you’re beside me.

I promise.

I want to tell everyone that you’re mine tomorrow.

I froze as I read her last text. As far as everyone else knew, we were only friends, and that was more than enough for people to go against her.

No, you don’t have to Lucy. I’m in no rush for people to ruin what we have.

Zayn, I’m tired of caring what other people have to say.

I know, but please think about it Lucy.

I did, and I’m doing it. I’ll talk to you tomorrow.

I fell back onto my bed. I was suddenly exhausted, but at the same time, I only wanted Lucy to be right beside me. I sighed and then heard the front door of the house open.

“Zayn?” I heard my mum call out. I got off of my bed and walked down the stairs to where my mom was.

“Hey mum,” I said, coming over to give her a hug.

“What’s the matter?” she asked as she began taking out the groceries.

“I don’t know how to explain it,” I mumbled, combing back my hair. I grabbed the raspberries and began eating them.

“Does it have to do with Lucy?” she asked. I nodded. “Have you talked to her?”

“Yeah, and it only seemed to make things worse.”

“Make what worse?” she asked.

“Us, I guess,” I said.

“Does she still make you happy?” she asked.

“That’s not the type of problem we’re having. It’s just that nobody seems to like the fact that we’re friends. I mean, that’s all they think we are, and then Lucy wants to share with everyone that we’re a couple, and I’m just worried that that’s going to affect us horribly,” I stated, shoving a whole bunch of raspberries into my mouth.

“Since when do you care about what others think?” she wondered, taking the berries out of my hand.

“I don’t, and it doesn’t bother me much, but I know it’s hurting Lucy a lot more than she’ll show.” I thought about how she no longer sat next to her friends or hardly even talked to them.

“Hey,” my mum said. “I’m glad you really care for Lucy. If you really want this to work, you need to stand beside her no matter what gets thrown your way.”

I nodded and she patted my shoulder. I helped her put the groceries away and then went back to the living room. I tried paying attention to the TV, but I kept wandering back to how Lucy’s decision might change everything.
