I felt the stares of my friends as I tried to eat my berry salad. I took one bite, and then gave up. “What, guys?” I asked exasperated.

“What happened during history?” Barbara was the first to ask.

“Yeah, why were you talking with that freak show?” demanded Sally.

“And then you went up to him to be partners,” exclaimed Robert.

“We know Sheila wasn’t here, but that didn’t mean you had to stoop down to his level. Any one of us would have been happy to have been your partner,” claimed Francis.

“You guys know what,” I said, standing up. “I’m so sick of your judging and questioning what every student body does,” I said as I started walking away. Then I came up to Sally. “And you know what else; he is not a freak show. You guys should be ashamed of yourselves for bashing really nice people.”

“Lucy,” Robert said. “Wow, he’s already managed to change you.”

I laughed and then started to walk away. I could hardly believe it. They thought Zayn was changing me, but no, as a matter of fact, he was opening my eyes.

I wasn’t considering thinking about hanging out with Zayn for lunch today, but right now, that seemed like the only thing that made sense. I walked towards the exit which would lead outside to Zayn’s oak tree. I climbed the steep hills, happy again that I wore sneakers.

But I was extremely thrilled when Zayn smiled when he saw me coming.
