The Only Exception

It's Zayn Malik before One Direction. Zayn and Lucy develop a relationship despite their popularity statuses. They love each other, but is it worth losing friends and family? Will their struggle to cope with outside forces end up in vain or will they have the happily ever after?

11. Best Friends For Never

Lucy's P.O.V.

It had been one week since I’d first kissed Zayn. All I could think about was kissing him. It was all I could do not to jump up in the middle of history and make out with him on the spot. But I couldn’t. I sighed as I began eating my slice of pizza. I looked around to see my friends goofing off at our local pizza restaurant. Sheila and Sally and the other girls were busy gossiping to each other, as usual, and the guys were just being foolish. I missed Zayn’s maturity and how he made me feel special. I couldn’t stand the fact that I had to hide our relationship from my friends, but they were still being jerks about my friendship with Zayn in the first place. I was about to take another bite of pizza when Sheila motioned me to follow. I glanced down at the other girls, who nodded their heads. I followed Sheila to the park across the restaurant and towards an empty bench.

“Lucy,” she began. She looked deep into my eyes. I was confused about where this was going to lead. “You know I’m your friend, right?” I nodded my head. “And you can tell me anything, right?” she asked. I nodded my head again. Oh God, I hated where this was starting to lead. “Good, so tell me why you are friends with that freak show,” she demanded.

“What freak show?” I asked, even though I knew exactly who she meant.

“You know exactly who I’m talking about,” she retaliated.

“Zayn is not a freak show!” I yelled at her, standing up. “He’s an insanely sweet guy and he’s actually a decent person, unlike all of you guys combined!”

Sheila gasped. “Oh my God, you’re going against your friends for some guy you hardly know.”

“No Sheila, you don’t know him, and you especially don’t know me!”

“What are you talking about? I’ve known you since elementary school, and I know you’re not the kind to befriend losers,” she said, the hurt obvious in her eyes.

“Sheila,” I sighed. “You’re right, I don’t befriend losers,” I said as I saw her smile. “So, I guess we’re not friends anymore,” I said and began walking away.

“Lucy!” she screamed, but I didn’t turn back. “Lucy! You’re going to regret this!” she said. I continued walking. I only wanted to be with Zayn, but I didn’t know what he would be doing right now. I took out my cell and dialed his number.

“Hello?” I heard Zayn’s smooth voice answer.

“Zayn!” I said.

“Hey, Lucy, what’s up?” he asked.

“Uhm, that’s what I was going to ask you,” I said.

“Uhm…I’m just hanging out at home, and not doing much, really. Why?”

“Could I come over?” I asked. I gripped the phone, hoping he wouldn’t deny.

He hesitated before saying, “Yeah, sure.”

“I don’t mean to interrupt or anything, I just wanted to see you.”

“No, no, it’s cool,” he said.

“Ok, I’ll see you in ten minutes,” I said and then hung up. I skipped towards his house, wondering if Zayn had told Mike about us. I still hadn’t because I didn’t want to rush us, and I also hoped that Mike wouldn’t be mad.
