Friends With Benefits

43. Chapter 43

"Oh my gosh, I'm breaking the law, I'm sorry mum," Liam said nervously to himself as he sped up to get closer to Harry. As soon as we arrived at Johnny's house, I jumped out of the car and ran over to Harry who was just stepping out of his car. I put my hands on his chest and tried holding him back with all my might. It wasn't working. He was too riled up. He had a look of anger and determination on his face. "Harry, please don't do this!" I said as he broke away from my hold; pushing me aside as he marched up to Johnny's house enraged, not even making eye contact with me. He was too focused on the task at hand; there was nothing I could say that would stop him.
Liam stepped in and stopped Harry instantly as he placed a hand against his chest. "Mate, don't do this," Liam said.
"Liam get out of my way," Harry said angrily as Liam blocked his path. They both stood there in the middle of the street just mere inches from each other.
"It's not worth it, Harry," Liam said sternly. Harry tried to push past Liam, but Liam was much stronger than Harry when he needed to be. He didn't budge as he gripped on to Harry's shoulders, restricting him from going any further. Harry was absolutely furious.
"Liam do you know what he's fucking put her through!? Do you know what he's done!? How much pain he's caused her!?" Harry said fuming. "I'm not going to let him get away with this!" he yelled as he struggled to get past Liam.
"No. Harry, I'm not going to let you do this! You need to stop this right now!" Liam said in an authoritative tone, as he stood even closer to Harry, indicating that he wasn't going to back down. Harry glared into Liam's eyes, his breathing ragged.
"There's no reason for you to get involved and to get yourself into trouble, when the police can take care of it themselves. If you fight him right now and the police show up then you're just going to end up in jail right beside this Johnny fellow. Do you want that? Do you want to put Leslie through that? Do you want to be like her ex, Harry? A criminal? No, you don't. So we're going to go home, we're going to call the police, and that's the end of that," Liam said firmly.Harry's attempts to get past Liam became weaker and weaker. If there was anyone capable of talking sense into Harry, it was Liam. I could tell he was slowly getting through to him. I decided now would be a good time to try to get through to him as well.
Harry P.O.V
"Harry..." I heard Leslie's delicate voice say. I turned around; jaw clenched, and eyes piercing. The moon had hidden behind the clouds so I couldn't see her face. I let out a frustrated sigh and glared at the ground, not wanting to make eye contact with her. My breathing was still a bit heavy as I attempted to calm myself down. She walked over and gently grabbed my wrists that stuck out just above my pockets where I had my hands placed as she moved in close to me. I still hadn't made eye contact with her. "He's not worth it. He's garbage. You're better than him. You're better than he'll ever be. Please don't do this. Can we please just go home?" she asked. I didn't say anything.
She gently lifted up my chin. As soon as I looked up at her, I instantly became weak as I saw her big brown eyes staring back at me, glistening from her tears, worried for my safety; scared for what was about to happen as she eyed me cautiously. My jaw began to unclench as I continued to get lost in her eyes. What was I doing? I, of all people, should know that Leslie hates violence. She's been through enough of that in her life. Why was I putting her through this again? Liam was right. I would be no better than Johnny if I fought him tonight.
She didn't speak for a few moments until finally I broke the silence.
"I'm sorry," I said. "I shouldn't have gotten riled up like that."
"Harry...the fact that you are so protective and care so much, means the world to me," she said in a serious tone. "I mean, don't get me wrong, I would love for you to beat the crap out of Johnny," she said with a little smile, "but I just don't want anything bad to happen to you," she said, turning serious again as she grabbed my face gently with her hands so we could maintain eye contact. I gave her an understanding look as I could feel myself becoming calmer. She gently kissed me on my lips as I felt my self instantly become more at ease.
"Um guys...sorry to interrupt, but maybe we should get out of the street...and away from this guy's house..." Liam said apprehensively.
"Right." Leslie said in agreement. Leslie let go of me and walked over to Liam.
"Thank you so much for being here for me--for us, tonight," she said as she gave him a tight hug. "I don't know what I'd do without you."
"It's no problem," he said kindly. They let go and made their way back over to me. I looked at Liam sheepishly. "Thanks, mate."
He gave me a knowing look and nodded his head; forgiving me for my actions.
"Don't worry about it. That's what best friends are for."
