Friends With Benefits

39. Chapter 39

"Oh good, I was just about to go up and get you!" my mum said as Harry and I walked into the kitchen. Harry and I glanced at each other and smirked, knowing that my mum would have caught us getting a little too close if she had decided to go upstairs just a minute earlier.
"Dinner's ready!" she exclaimed.
We went and sat around the kitchen table as my mum served us our spaghetti with French bread.
"Mmm, this looks delicious, thank you!" Harry said as he flashed my mum a winning smile. I could tell he was turning on his charm even more, now that him and I were together, even if she didn't know it yet.
"Yes, thank you! My favorite!" I said excitedly. I was a bit on the fence about this meal though. My mum only ever made my favorite when she had bad news. It was her way of getting me in a good mood before telling me something that I wasn't going to like. We sat in silence as we all ate. I hadn't had a good meal in a while so I was savoring every bite.
"So how was your business trip?" I finally asked.
There was hesitation in her voice. "It was good..."
"Actually, that's what I wanted to talk to you about," she said nervously. I looked up at her with a questioning look. "My boss has offered me a promotion...and I've accepted...the pay is really great..."
"Well, that's great!" I said happily, a bit confused as to why she was acting weirdly about it.
"The thing is...the job requires me to take a lot more of these business trips..."
"Well that's okay, I can handle you being gone every now and then," I said, still a bit confused at her reluctance to tell me about her new job.
"Well...when I say a lot...I mean, that's the only thing I'll be doing from now on...I'd be gone for weeks at a time, year round..."
I now understood why she was acting the way she was. This new job meant she'd never be home. Or at least she'd rarely be home.
"Oh..." was all I managed to say. It's only ever been me and my mum. My father has never been around. So I didn't know exactly how to feel about her not being around all the time either.
"I was thinking that since you'd be going off to college soon anyway, it would be the perfect time for me to take this job..." she said.
"When do you start?" I asked quietly.
She hesitated for a moment.
"Tonight...I'm flying out to Japan..."
"Wow, so soon..." I said taken aback. I was upset; I'm not going to lie. But at the same time I was extremely happy for her. She's always wanted to travel around the world; it's been her dream. I certainly didn't want to be the reason she had to give up her dream. This was a once in a lifetime opportunity for her and I wasn't going to let her pass it up. I let out a sigh.
"Well I'm happy for you mum, and I support you in whatever you do," I said sweetly.
She gave me a warm smile. "Thank you, sweetie, I'm glad you're okay with this," she said relieved. We were silent for a moment.
"Oh and Harry," she began. Harry looked up from his plate with a mouthful of food, wide-eyed, as he hadn't expected to be brought into our personal conversation. A strand of spaghetti dangled from his mouth as he slurped it up quickly. "I want you to look after my girl while I'm away okay? She told me how you were here for her through everything, and I truly appreciate that," she said sincerely. "You can stay in the guest room whenever you'd like, I don't mind. It would make me feel better, knowing she had someone watching over her," she said.
He swallowed his food and smiled a big smile. "It'd be my pleasure," he said looking over to me. My mum didn't catch the cheekiness in his voice, but I did. I bit down on my bottom lip trying to suppress the large grin that was forming on my face. My mum was clueless. She had no idea what was going on between Harry and I. She simply thought I viewed Harry as only a best friend. I felt a bit guilty that she trusted me so much. "In fact, why don't you stay over tonight? You look so tired dear, I don't want you to fall asleep at the wheel when you drive home," she said.
"That would be lovely, thank you," he said with a charming smile. We finished our food and went to sit around the couch and chat for a while before my mum had to leave. I loved how having Harry over wasn't the least bit awkward and didn't once ruin the personal time my mum and I were having. She accepted him as part of the family and that meant so much to me. The way he easily held a conversation with her and how he was so respectful made my heart fill up with so much joy. He is absolutely perfect. I can't believe I have the honor of calling him mine.
