Friends With Benefits

17. Chapter 17

She sat there, with her arms hugging tightly around the gigantic stuffed penguin, as she stared out the car window deep in thought. I didn't want to say anything to interrupt her thoughts. I didn't even know what to say, really. "Would you mind taking me home?" she asked softly as she came back to the real world. I was a bit taken aback but I agreed. I figured she needed to have time to think about this guy or something, and probably didn't want to be around me as she did. I pulled up to her house shortly. We said our goodbyes, she thanked me for the penguin, and I waited till she safely went inside her house, to head back to mine.
Leslie P.O.V.
I was so confused. I couldn't believe Jake kissed me. He was a nice guy and everything and many girls would love a guy like him, but why couldn't I feel anything for him? My mind always wondered back to Harry. But Harry only saw me as a best friend. I went to take a shower and got ready for bed. My mind was wondering in all different directions, thinking about everything. After about an hour I finally fell asleep only to be awakened, terrified by a nightmare. I had forgotten all about the creepy ventriloquist dolls, but apparently my subconscious mind hadn't. I looked at the time. It was 3 a.m. I was terrified all alone in my house. My mind started playing tricks on me. Then I started thinking about how easily someone could break in to my house at any moment. Ugh. Why do I keep scaring myself? I looked over at my phone and debated whether or not to text Harry.
"Hey...are you up?" I texted. He probably wasn't up. About a minute later my phone rang, and it was Harry calling. I answered.
Harry P.O.V.
"Hello?" I heard her sweet voice say as she answered the phone.
"Hey, Love what's going on?"
"Oh, nothing. I just had a really bad dream is all...and then I just started scaring myself even more here all alone." *light bulb* I should go over and surprise her.
"I'm sorry," I said apologetically, as I put on a plain white t, some sweat pants, and a beanie.
"No, don't be," she said. "So, what were you doing up so late?"
I was thinking of you.
"Just couldn't sleep is all," I said instead. "I think I got quite used to having you sleep over, it feels so lonely here now," I said with a soft chuckle. "I know, same here," she said quietly. I grabbed my keys and headed out to my car. "Can you hold on a sec, Love?" I asked as I muted my end of the conversation. "Sure," she said simply. I turned on my car, turned off the radio, and went back to my phone. "Okay, I'm back." We talked for a while and then I finally reached her house. I silently made my way to her front door and knocked.
"Oh my god, someone's at the door, I'm going to die," she said nervously.
"I'm sure you won't die," I said with a laugh. "Just go see who it is."
"Okay, I'm going downstairs now," she whispered into the phone. She was silent for a moment. I could just picture her creeping down the stairs like a ninja, trying not to make a sound as she went to see who was at the door. I laughed to myself at the thought.
"...H-Harry?" she said relieved and confused at the same time.
"Well are you going to let me in?" I said smiling into the peephole where I knew she was looking through. She opened the door, and we hung up. "I thought you'd like some company, you know, to...make you feel safe tonight," I said. She paused for a moment and then wrapped her arms around me giving me a tight, warm hug. I wrapped my arms around her as well, hugging her back. "Thank you," she said softly. "That's so sweet of you."
"Okay, now let's get you back to sleep," I said as I put my hand on the small of her back, leading her up the stairs. We got under the covers. I was sitting up slightly and she snuggled up against me. I put my arm around her, holding her close. We stayed like this for a while, as I gently stroked her arm, soothing her. "So tell me what's on your mind," I said.
"Well...I had a dream that those dolls were coming to life and that they were going to kill me, it felt so real and it was terrifying. Then when I woke up, I started thinking about being here alone, and someone just breaking in, since I broke in so easily myself," she said. It was dark and I could barely see her face but I knew there was something else on her mind.
"You sure there isn't anything else?" I asked. She paused and I felt her let her guard down.
"And...well, honestly, I'm just thinking about the whole thing that happened with Jake. He's a great guy and everything, but I just don't have any feelings for him." I wanted to jump for joy when she said that, but I composed myself and listened to what else she had to say. "I don't know what to do, I'm just so confused. And I...never mind."
"No, tell me...what is it, Love?" She was silent for a moment, and then she looked up at me. Next thing I knew, she leaned in and kissed me.
