15. just you and your parents

There was nothing you could do, so you went to sleep. You wished that Louis was in bed next to you so that he could hold you close and tell you that he would never leave you. You wanted him to tell you that everything was going to be okay

and that things would get better from here. But still, you weren’t so sure if they would. After you fell asleep, you woke up about an hour later, and you could tell that you weren’t going to get much sleep tonight. You laid in bed, trying to push everything out of your head, but nothing was working. So you got up, there was no sense in waiting for sleep to come when you knew it never would. You crept down the stairs and walked through the house, not wanting to wake Lou. You saw him on the couch asleep, and slowly approached him. You sat down near him, and put your hand to his face. His hand moved to rest on top of yours, but you were sure that he was still asleep. You thought that watching someone sleep would be boring, but it was so interesting!! You never knew that staring at someone not moving could fascinate you this much, but it did.All of a sudden Louis started to thrash around in his sleep, as if he was having a bad dream. He tossed and turned back and forth, and you pulled your hand away from him. He mumbled something that you couldn’t understand, turned over once more, then settled down. You surely weren’t going to wake him up, and you couldn’t do anything in the house since you didn’t want to make any noise, but you had to find something to do.You pulled on a light jacket, and left the house, not knowing where you were going. You just started to walk. It was still dark out, and it was very silent and peaceful. Doing something out of the ordinary didn’t seem boring, and you had a feeling of importance about you as you meandered down the sidewalk. Finally, after a lot of walking, you ended up at a cemetery. The cemetery where your parents were buried.Immediately, your heart started to beat quickly. You were in a cemetery in the middle of the night, no one was around, and you were visiting your parents’ graves. You repeated over and over in your head “there are no such things as ghosts, there are no such things as ghosts, there are no such things as ghosts.”You tried to convince yourself, but you found that you were checking over your shoulder every few steps out of paranoia. After walking for a while, the wind started to pick up, and the sky opened. Rain was down pouring on you, but you didn’t even feel it. You continued to walk as the ground turned to mud beneath you.You finally reached your parents graves. The sound of the rain hitting the ground and the tombstones blurred from individual splashes, to an ongoing roar in your head. For a while, you just looked down at the tombstones as the tears welled up in your eyes. Then you dropped to your knees in front of them, not caring about the mud that was now all over your pants. You stayed there for a long time, just talking to your parents. You asked them how they were doing now, and if they were watching over you now. You told them that you missed them, and hoped that they were proud of you. After you said everything you had too, you just stayed there. You weren’t ready to leave yet. You stayed, sitting on the ground in the mud in the pouring rain. You heard someone walk up behind you, and you didn’t even bother to look. You really didn’t care who it was right now.But then they spoke to you

???: You okay? You turned around and saw Louis standing there with an umbrella. You could barely see his face through the rain. You stood up and ran into his outstretched arms.Louis just stood there hugging you. Finally, he spoke again:

Louis: I’m sorry I wasn’t home for you when you needed me You didn’t answer, you just stood there holding on to Louis. You were sad about everything, especially your parents and Louis, but standing there in the rain, you felt an inner peace that you hadn’t felt in a while. You hoped that your parents could see you and Louis now.You hoped they were happy.
