5. Job Hunting

Chapter 5:

~Nikki's Point of View~

"Hello, I am here to apply for the job opening," I say handing my résumé to the older, petite women behind the counter.

"Thank you darling, could you wait about 20 minutes? The boss is in a meeting." I nod and sit down in a very comfortable wooden chair, eh, maybe not. Maybe I am just tired and need to sit.

This is my third job interview today. First, I went to the Starbucks across the street from the hotel, no luck. Then I went to the Jack Wills store in the shopping mall, most likely not getting that job. Now I am here at Nando’s. It isn’t the best paying job but who knows who will show up.

I pull out my phone and send a group message to Riley and Kaulena:

Wanna meet at the shopping mall across from the hotel at 1:30? I am almost done

Kaulena: yep sounds good!

Riley: sure see you guys soon

“Miss Thompson, would you follow me, please?” The petite lady who’s name according to the tag on her shirt is Martha. I stand up and follow behind her to the back of the restaurant. She leads me to a booth where a man is sitting who seems to be about 20-25 years old.

“Hello, what is your name?” The man stands up and shaking my hand.

“Nicole Thompson, but I prefer to go by Nikki.” I smile and we both sit down in the booth.

“Hello Nikki, I am Peter. Nice to meet you,” He fixes his shirt and puts my résumé in front of him, “Wow, your résumé is wonderful and just what we need. Wow.”

I put on a fake smile, all the other interviews I was in they said the same thing, then eventually added, ‘but we already have our jobs filled,’ blah, blah, blah.

“Thank you,” I say to him as he looks enamored by the piece of paper with black letters all over it.

“What time and days are you able to work?” He says finally looking up from the paper with a huge smile on his face. I kind of wish he would close his mouth because his teeth were unbearable too look at. He should consider braces.

“I can work whenever you need me!” I start to fidget with my bracelets but force to stop myself.

“Are you from here? You seem to have an American accent.” He puts the résumé aside after he writes something down on his notepad.

“Nope, I just moved here from the United States.” We both stand up and start walking from the back room to the exit.

“Oh how fun! Did just you move or did your family move too?” He asks me as he stands a little too close.

“I moved with two of my close friends.”

Peter opens the door for me, “I will call you later on today to figure out what times and days for you to work,” he stops and waits for me to be completely outside and continues, “I like to go to dinner with the new employees to get to know them, maybe tonight we could go? Only if you’re available.”

I nod my head, “Tonight is good. Call me when and where.”

He smiles, “See you then,” I smile back at him and turn to my car.

Did my soon to be boss just ask me out on a date?

~Kaulena’s Point of View~

“Where are they?” I mumble to myself sitting alone, awkwardly at a table that seats four people.

The waiter comes back and places my drink on the table, “Anything else I can get you right now?”

“No thanks I am just waiting for my friends.” He smiles and walks back to the kitchen.

I look down at my phone and go on Twitter. I go to One Direction’s page and they haven’t tweeted anything since Thursday, the day we met them. Their last tweet was, “@onedirection: Wonderful day! Thank you Australia! We always enjoy the visits! 1DHQ x”

I exit the app and look up to see Riley walking through the door and looking for me. I wave and she sees me and walks over to the table.

“Hey sorry, I couldn’t grab a cab.” She says sitting down looking apologetic.

“No, its fine, I was just sitting here awkwardly that’s all.” We giggle and see Nikki finally get here.

“Whoa, crazy day wouldn’t you say?” Nikki says with a huge smile on her face. I look at Riley and she smirks at me.

“What happened? Why are you so happy?” I ask her trying to hold in my laughter. She freezes and her smile disappears and she starts to stutter as she answers the question.

“W-what? I am j-just,” she breaks out in laughter and so do Riley and I, “I got a job, that’s all,” she finally say.

I shake my head, “Yeah okay, I am not that happy and I got a job. Something else is going on.”

“Fine, my boss just said he wants us to have dinner together so we could get to know each other better, no big deal.” Nikki’s phone starts to ring and she stands up, “One second that’s him.”

I look over to Riley and she rolls her eyes, “Well isn’t this magical, she already has a date and we’ve been here for what, three days?” I nod my head in agreement.

“Well, at least if Louis and Eleanor never break up she will have a backup plan.” We chuckle and stop once Nikki comes back.

            “Well what happened?” Riley asks.

“Pssh, nothing he just told me when and where we were going. Could you guys please go and like keep an eye on me. I am just a little worried.” She says and her smile becomes a frown.

I look at Riley and we both nod. “Why not? I mean we got nothing better to do.” I reply.

“Hello, I am Brad, can I get you two ladies something to drink?” The waiter says handing them menus.

“I will just have water.” Riley says.

“Sparkling or regular?”

Riley looks at me and a shrugs, “Uh, regular, please.”

“I will have the same please.” Nikki adds in.

The waiter nods and walks to get their water.

“Wow, fancy place we got here.” Nikki says, looking at the menu and her jaw drops.

“What?” I ask her.

“Look at the prices!” She says.

I shake my head, “Remember we have jobs now!”

“Mine isn’t the best paying job though!” Nikki says freaking out at this point.
“Maybe, you’ll get a raise if you’re nice to your new hubby, I mean boss.” I say to Nikki and Riley starts to laugh so hard that she starts to cry.

“Shut up, nothing is going to happen between me and him.” Nikki finally spits out after glaring at us trying to have a straight face. “What jobs did you guys get anyways?”

I answer first, “I think my job will help us in the long run.”

“What is it?” They ask me urgently.

“I got a job as an assistant to a party planner at the Funky Buddha!”

“What!? You mean the place where Andy goes and parties?” Nikki almost shouts.

I nod. “Kaulena, that’s amazing!”

“I know, I know. What about you Nikki? Where did you meet this boss of yours?” I ask smiling.

“Nando’s,” I say smiling.

“Oh. My. God. What if-?”

“That’s what I was thinking.” Nikki says, “What about you Riley?”

“Oh, I didn’t really get a job that would help us meet One Direction. I wasn't thinking of that.” Riley says apologetically.

“That’s okay. What did you get?” I ask.

“I got a job at Top Shop.”

“That’s awesome! We could get clothes with discounts!” I say.

“That’s true. At least I did one helpful thing today.”

We talked after we ordered our food and ate for about an hour after. Finally once I finish my last bite, we get up and walk toward the door.

“Shopping time? I think yes!” Riley says excitedly pulling out her wallet full of cash.

“Have fun spending your money! I am saving mine for a rainy day!” I say shaking from the cool breeze.

“You have so many clothes you don’t need any more!” Nikki says pushing me. I stumble around catching myself from falling, which would’ve been bad. It is pretty packed.

We walk into our first store and Riley already has three shirts in her hand. This is going to be a very long night.

Nikkis Point of View

After our shopping, I ended up with two news shirts, a new pair of jeans, and a wool coat. It only cost me £59 ($95), but Riley. Oh my god. She ended up with 11 new shirts, two pairs of jeans, new wedge boots, two winter jackets and a pair of shorts, who knows how much she spent. Kaulena only got a winter coat and put some Ugg boots on hold.

“What a wonderful, successful day of shopping.” Riley says putting her bags on the bed in the hotel room.

“Yeah well I just can’t wait until we move into our flat, and we can actually unpack.” Kaulena says plopping onto the bed.

“Hey, get off of my bed!” I push Kaulena off my bed to the ground and continue, “But don’t worry we’re going to move in tomorrow. I call dibs on the blue room! I have it all planned out on what it’s going to look like!” I say imagining the most awesome room I will ever have.

“That’s alright with me! I want the lavender one!” Riley chimes in.

“Whoa, wait what! What if I wanted the lavender one?” Kaulena says butting in.

“Kaulena, it’s okay, it’s okay, you can paint it whatever you want later on.” I say patting her back.

“Fine, it is just a little bigger anyways.”

I laugh and walk to the bathroom and take a nice hot shower. Kaulena goes right to bed and Riley sits on her computer checking Twitter.

Living here might be a little bit of a struggle, but I think we can tough through it. Let’s hope.
