2. The horror

Autumn walked the abandoned streets of Basha- the only time the streets were empty was at dawn. Autumn walked down the silent streets with only the sound of crickets to keep her company. She took her time walking down the road, looking at the red sky with a tint of purple peeking through from time to time. The sun was unseen due to the vast amount of trees covering the way.

A car drove up next to her. The car was black with tinted windows. The tinted, mysterious, window rolled down and a man with black soot eyes, that reminded Autumn of a wolf, poked his head out. She kept her distance but listened to what the man had to say. In the moment of silence she observed his features. His eyes were scary but narrow, his dark black hair was short but well kept, and his cheek bones were well defined.

Autumn snapped back to reality when the man asked for directions. She showed him the way and he thanked her for all her help. She walked away realizing the crickets were silent and the purple in the sky was no longer visible.

Before she could ponder the explanations why a hand wrapped around her mouth and body, tearing her to the ground. Her eyes widen in fear as the wolf-like eyes stared back at her. The eyes changed from innocent to deadly in a matter of seconds. The man tied up her arms and legs and threw her in the trunk of his jet black colored car. Autumn screamed and screamed but the fact of the matter is that no matter how loud she was screaming no one could help her as of now.

Autumn heard the click of the opening trunk and awaited her fate. Darkness consumed her as she was grabbed and thrown into a different room. When her vision came to focus she realized she wasn’t alone. There were other girls tied up as well. What kind of monster is this? Autumn dragged her body to a corner of the room and curled up in a fetal position. She felt the eyes of the other girls implanted on her but eye contact was never made.

Outside the room you could hear the sharpening of knives, the sounds of whips being tested, and the sound of an evil master mind laughing at his plot coming together. Once the laughter stopped the metal cellar door shot opened. One by one each girl was taken into separate rooms. Each girl got there turn being tortured- there screams sounded the same. Each girl cried for help but no help ever came. Once the monster was done he would throw the girl back into the same room where the nightmare began.

The man took Autumn by the hair and dragged her out of the room. “Stop it! Let me go! Please, don’t hurt me!” The man would snarl at her words. Autumn was chained up to a wooden board that looked like it was used in medieval times. It was at a 45 degree angle- a perfect position to torture her at all angles. Her arms laid out with her palms facing the ceiling. The first weapon of his choice was a whip. He took it implanting it into her body. Of course she would scream but nobody would come to her rescue. There was no escaping. This was a nightmare you wouldn’t awake from.  The whipping stopped. Autumn sighed in relief thinking it was over. She was wrong, so wrong.  He took his newly sharpened knife, holding it to her forehead.

“What are you thinking?” He said as he slide the knife down her face. The blood oozed down her face. “Are you thinking about your family? Your friends? How you will never see them again?” He took the knife and jabbed it into the poor girl’s stomach but missing the vital organs. She whimpered in pain. “Out of all the girl’s you’re my favorite.” He ran his fingers through her auburn colored hair.  He stared at her amber eyes but didn’t stop hurting her.

“T-then will you let me live?” He chuckled.

“No but maybe just maybe you will last longer than the others.”

He unchained her watching her wounds ooze blood to the ground. He dragged her body back into the room the same way she came in-by pulling her hair. Autumn curled up in a corner of the metal, hollow room. There was only one window in the cellar but it was to small and too high up to escape out of. She let out a sigh and listened to the sound of the rain. She didn’t know when it started raining but for the first time tonight it was silent enough to hear it pounding against the roof top. None of the girl’s said anything to each other. Perhaps because they were too scared to mention anything. Perhaps they didn’t know what to say. Or perhaps they didn’t want to know what happened to the other. They all drifted off into a light sleep that night.

Chase-Autumns boyfriend- sensed something was off that night. He called Autumn’s parents and when they have said they haven’t seen her he grew worried. Maybe she will show up tomorrow he told himself but he didn’t think that was the case.  He tried not to think about it as he fell asleep.

He dreamt of Autumn that night. “Chase.” She called out. “Chase, help me.” Her voice was low and timid. “I’m running out of time. I need you.”

“Where are you? Autumn are you okay?”

“Chase. Chase help me. I’m running out of time. I need you.” She repeated. He looked at her, confused. “He’s a bad man Chase. It’s not just me. Chase help me. I’m running out of time. I need you.”

“Baby it will be okay. I will find you. I will help you.”

“Don’t let me disappear. Please don’t let me disappear.” She said fading out of the dream.

“Wait! Autumn! Don’t go! I will save you!” He screamed as she disappeared from the dream.

Chase woke up with a fright. He was painting and immediately called the cops. He didn’t tell them about his dream of course because the cops would think him mad. The cops added her to the list of people on the missing person’s list. Of course Chase looked at all the girl’s who were missing. There were five of them including Autumn. A girl named Tracey had dark brown wavy hair that just surpassed her boob that matched the color of her eyes exactly. The second girl he saw on the missing persons list was a girl named Veronica. She had black shoulder length hair with green cat like eyes. Onto the third girl- Felicia who had green hair with indigo colored eyes.  The last girl on the list-besides Autumn- was Lucy. Lucy had strawberry blonde hair with violet colored eyes. He knew right away what they all had in common. They all knew each other.

Autumn woke up with the water seeping onto her skin. She looked up to see the water entering from the window that she lay under. She opened her mouth allowing the rain water to enter her mouth. Time for day two. The only fear that Autumn had at this very moment was not knowing who was going to survive or not.

The loud bang of the door told the girls they had company. The man looked at all the girl’s. Each one shaking- the fear of not knowing what the future holds was eating them alive. He walked over to Autumn. “Your turn to go first.” He lifted her off the ground and threw her over his shoulder. She didn’t bother to scream because that would only make matters worse than they already are.

He tossed her onto the ground watching her not even try to squirm away. “Giving up so easily?” He mocked. He knelt down in front of her uniting her legs and opening them. He un-zippered his pants and got closer to her.

“No!” She screamed and kicked him as if a reflex. His eyes narrowed in anger.  “Wait. No! I’m sorry!” She cried, tears escaping from her eyes. Crack, Crack, Crack.

“Maybe that will teach you who is in charge here.” He carried out his dreadful deed and zippered his pants and took a weapon that looked like something the devil would own. She tried to make out the shape. It was a pitch fork. It had to be. He jammed the weapon into her good leg. He ignored her screams as he tortured her little by little.

He finished torturing Autumn for the day and threw her back in the cellar and began his work on the other girls. One more girl for the day-Felicia. Felicia looked at Autumn before she existed giving her a slight nod. That nod held so many more meanings than any words could.

The screams of Autumn’s dear friend echoed throughout her body. Pierced her ears to the point where she thought they were bleeding. Felicia stayed in the torture chamber longer than any of the other girl’s this night. It was only when her screams silenced when everyone grew worried. The man threw Felicia back into the room and for the first time Autumn limped over to her friend witnessing the damage. Felicia was gasping for breath as her eyes told Autumn she wanted this horror to end. She looked at her face. If she hadn't seen Felicia transform she wouldn’t have recognized her. Felicia was missing some of her teeth, one of her eyes was bruising-probably will be a black eye- and her check was broken. Autumn moved her eyes from her friend’s face to the rest of her body. All her fingers were cut off on one hand but the other hand wasn’t even there, her clothes were ripped up-just like Autumn’s- and her skin on her legs wasn’t visible.

As Autumn was observing her disfigured friend she didn’t realize that Felicia had stop breathing. Autumn showed no emotions but closed her dead friend’s eyes.

“Is…Is she dead?” Veronica asked. Autumn just nodded and sat back in her corner. “Oh my god! No!” Veronica screamed bursting into tears. “What kind of mutiny is this? Why us? What did we ever do?”

“Veronica! Don’t you get it? There is no such thing as fate! The fact is that bad things happen to good people. It just took this to make us realize that!” Autumn snapped. Veronica stopped taking after that taking in Autumn’s words.

“Don’t let me disappear Chase.” Chase woke up suddenly to these words. He was more determined than ever to figure out where his beloved girlfriend is. He wondered if the cops had any leads. He also wondered if this man was someone they knew. It was clear that these kidnappings were planned and probably took a lot of time to configure.  He carefully went through what each girl was doing when they were kidnapped. He soon came to realize that they were all by themselves out for a walk, enjoying the atmosphere around them.

The man walked into the cellar looking at all the girl’s as he was holding two sharp daggers. “I have to be somewhere. When I come back I expect at least one of you to be dead.” He threw the daggers on the floor and walked out of the room. Lucy and Veronica were the first ones to grab the daggers.

“So quick to grab a dagger aren’t you Lucy?” Veronica screamed.

“I want to live just as badly as you do!” Lucy screamed back. Autumn and Tracey observed there unrecognizable friends slaughter each other.  When the two bodies fell to the floor with daggers in each other’s hearts Tracey stared at Autumn with fear.

“Three down…Two to go.” She said timidly. Tracey took the daggers out of her friends’ hearts and moved them next to the silver metal wall. “Are you happy now? They are dead! Dead! Can anyone hear me?” Tracey fell to the ground crying. Maybe just maybe she was mourning for her deceased friends or maybe she was broken to.

The man didn’t come back in that night. He let the girls lay with the decomposing corpses.  “I’m hungry Tracey. I don’t want to die here. I want to see my family again. At least one more time. I would be happy then. I could tell them how much I love them. Its weird how you can take things for granted. Everything was so…so perfect. Did you know that? We had it pretty good. Maybe things really do happen for a reason Tracey. Maybe this is just happening because we went through life thinking we had all these problems when in reality we really didn’t have any serious problems. Maybe just maybe. But if that were the case I bet everybody would get kidnapped and slaughtered. Too many people go on with their lives trying to be better than everyone else. If everyone was happy with what they were dealt maybe bad people wouldn’t exist.” Tracey looked at her friend with concern.

“Maybe.”  The only word that Tracey managed to get out. Autumn and Tracey hugged and slept with their dead friends but their friends didn’t seem dead, they seemed to be sleeping to.

The two friends survived three weeks in this nightmare. “I’m not feeling too well Autumn.” She coughed up blood and fell to her knees.

“It will be okay Tracey. Stick it out a little while longer. I’m sure someone will find us.” She coughed up some more blood. Tracey was so skinny now you could see every rib sticking out of her body. Autumn patted her friend on the back.

Autumn told her friend a story as Tracey lay on the floor. They talked about college and what they are going to do with their lives once they get out of here.

They heard sirens outside of the building. “Hey Tracey. You hear that? They found us.” Tracey didn’t reply. “Tracey?” Autumn looked at her friend who was looking back at her-lifeless. “No…No…No! Tracey! Tracey! Wake up Tracey.” She shook her friend but no words came out of Tracey’s mouth. “No!”

The cops barged into the cellar. Autumn could see the evil man in handcuffs being held down to the floor. “You are safe now.” Autumn shook her head backing away from the cops and her dead friends. “What’s your name?” Her eyes were filled with fear and she was too consumed with the fact that all her friends were dead that she couldn’t speak. The cop held out his hand for Autumn to take. “We won’t hurt you.” She reluctantly took the cops hand.

She stepped out into the rain. Into the darkness. The only light was the cops sirens surrounding the building. She sat at the edge of an ambulance with a blanket wrapped around her. The cops asked her questions but she never told what had happened to her and her friends. That Felicia was raped and tortured for screaming and resisting.  That Veronica and Lucy killed each other from fear. That Tracey died from disease or maybe it was starvation or both. That Autumn is traumatized from seeing her friends die right in front of her with nothing she could do. She would get over that she was raped and tortured but no she will never recover from the evil things she has witnessed.

Autumn lies in the hospital. The first people she sees is her family and the next is Chase. They all greet her and hug her and kiss her. “Where are Tracey, Lucy, Veronica, and Felicia? I have to tell them about this awful dream I had about them.” Her family stay silent staring at her. Chase holds her hand with one of his and pats it with his other. “What’s wrong?”

“Autumn.” Chase said as Autumn looked at him curiously. “They aren’t here anymore. They uhm…past on.”

“You mean it wasn’t a dream?” She cried out. Chase reluctantly nodded.  “No! No! It can’t be true! You’re lying to me! Stop it! Stop it!” Tears poured out of her eyes and the life monitor began to beep rapidly. Chase hugged Autumn tightly until the doctors ran in immediately and escorted Chase and Autumn’s family out.

She couldn’t talk to anyone without having a scene so the doctors, her family, and Chase had no choice to put her in an institution.

It is sad but true but the old Autumn has disappeared. “Autumn I’m sorry I couldn’t find you sooner. This is my entire fault.” She kissed his lips.

“You did all you could. I thank you for that.” She paused looking into his eyes. “Am I going to be okay Chase?” He held her in his arms. She jumped at the feeling of his arms, missing the feeling, how unfamiliar it was to her. “I’m screwed up Chase. I’m very screwed up. I want to go home. I want to go home with you. I want to lay under the stars with you. Will you take me home?” Chase had tears in his eyes but refused to let himself cry.

“You’ve been through a lot Autumn. I wish I could take you home. Oh I don’t want anything more than to take you home but sweetheart I can’t.”

“No, that’s not fair. Please!” She looked into his hazel eyes beginning to tear. “You can’t leave me here. You just can’t.” The doctors came in ready to escort Chase out of the building. “No! Don’t leave! Take me with you!” She screamed.  Chase got up but never took his eyes of the girl he loves.

“I love you Autumn. I’m so very sorry.”  She kneeled on the edge of her bed screaming for Chase to come back but he never did.

A week later Chase came back to visit Autumn. “Autumn.” Her named slipped out of his mouth slowly. She said nothing though, didn’t even glance at him. The doctors says she’s getting worse.

“I’m sorry. I’m sorry. I’ll stop. Don’t hurt me.” Chase and the doctors looked at her curiously keeping their distance. She was holding her knees now, rocking back and forth. “I didn’t mean to. I’ll be good. Will you let me live? I don’t want to die now.” Chase was about to speak but the doctors stopped him, telling him that she thinks she’s still being tortured. She has these moments often. She accidently tells the doctors what has happened to her that night. “Veronica! Lucy! Stop it! This is what he wants! Why won’t you listen? Oh, I’m so very sorry I couldn’t save you guys. I should have done something. Please forgive me.” One of the doctors patted Autumn on the back.

“We forgive you.” The doctor said calmly. Autumn looked at the man. Tears were rolling down her face, her eyes red and puffy, and her arms red for trying to scratch herself.

“Why?” The doctor didn’t answer but continued on patting her back.

“Autumn?” Chase called out.

“Chase? Oh no he got you to. Run. Run while you can. Get out of here.”

“The bad man is gone now. I promise. I’m not leaving you. I won’t let you disappear.” A smile went across her face.

“Were going to be okay right?” Chase nodded and kissed her forehead.

A month has passed and Autumn was still in the mental hospital. "They are all dead. Every single one of them. Why do I still have to suffer? No. I won't suffer anymore." Autumn looked around- seeing no doctors in sight. She grabbed the sheets from her bed and hung them from the doorway. She wrapped the sheets around her neck and hung herself.

Chase and her family found out and was destroyed. Chase went to the morgue to see the body which only angered him. His eyes were glassy but before anyone can say anything to him he stormed out of the morgue and went to his house.

"No Autumn. Why did yo do this?" He paced back in forth in the kitchen. He took his father's gun that lay in the draw and put the gun in his mouth. He pulled the trigger.

"I told you Autumn. I wouldn't let you disappear. We are okay now. We won't have any worries." Autumn smiled at him and hugged him. As he looked over her shoulder he saw Felicia, Veronica, Lucy, and Tracey looking at them smiling as if they approved.
