The Glitch in the Kill

Glitch and her best friend Jinx run into a bit of trouble on the way home from school.

I sat at my desk watching the clock with my silver eyes. It was the last class of the day and I just wanted to get home. I counted the seconds down until, finally, the bell rang. I practically ran out of class, and when I got to my locker, I heard someone call my name. I turned around to look into the violet eyes of my best and only friend Jinx. Jinx had the same raven black hair as myself, except that Jinx had pink streaks. Our styles were different though. I was wearing my black converse with my smoky grey jeans and a black t-shirt with a white skull on it, and a black leather jacket. Jinx wore pink converse with a black skirt, pink leggings underneath. Her shirt was the same hot pink as the rest of her outfit, with a lovely design in black.

"Glitch, we're still walking home together, right?"

I simply nodded. I was known for my silence, never screaming or crying, even when I was young.

"Well we've got to take the back alley this time. My mom said I'm not allowed to wander today." Jinx moaned.

I shrugged, showing that it was okay with me.

"Let's head then!"

As we walked down the alley, Jinx went on about her mom nagging her and her brother being just as annoying, which kind of hurt me. I didn't have a family to nag or annoy me. I was given up when I was born, so I had never met my parents, and I never cared what the kids at the orphanage were doing.

It didn't matter though because I wasn't listening anyway. I was busy focusing on my surroundings. I felt as if we weren't alone, yet this alley was never used except by us. We were approaching a corner and I stopped just before it, grabbing Jinx by the arm to stop her too. Jinx looked at me confused.

"What's wrong?"

I put a finger to my lips. I had heard something, or more like someone, from around the corner and I had the feeling we didn't want to be seen by whoever it was. I heard the sound getting closer, and realized it was footsteps, of about three people.

At the same moment I caught on to this, a man fell in front of us with a loud thud. My eyes widened in fear as I saw the knife sticking out of the man's chest, right where his heart was, and I knew he was dead. Jinx screamed as she took in the scene before her.

Suddenly, two boys walked around the corner. I pulled my eyes away from the gore in front of me to study the two.

The first one I noticed had dark brown hair and pale blue eyes, with goggles sitting on top of his head as if he always kept them there. He was wearing navy blue jeans and a plain black t-shirt, with pure black runners. The boy looked at me with curiosity.

The second one had dark red hair and brownish red eyes that had a darker ring around the iris. He was wearing the same thing as the first. His expression sent chills down my spine. He looked satisfied with the dead body laying in front of us. They both looked about our age.

The red haired boy kneeled down and pulled the knife out of the man quickly.

He stood up. "Well, now what are we going to do about these two?" he said with an evil grin, still holding the bloody knife at his side.

Jinx grabbed my arm and held onto it tightly. I tried to swallow my fear.

"Stitch, put the knife away," the other boy said quietly. He appeared weary of his friend.

Stitch placed the knife in a holster that was strapped around his leg. "You're no fun Gadget. What are we going to do with them then?" I was in shock at the fact that he was actually thinking of killing us.

Gadget held Stitch's gaze for a moment in silence, then he tilted his head towards us and said, "Grab them."

At that moment, I jumped into action. I pulled Jinx along with me by her wrist as I ran through the alley. I could hear the sprinting footsteps of the boys behind us. Before I could take three more steps, I was tackled against the ground, causing my skin to be sliced by the rocks.

I looked up at Gadget, who had managed to catch me and was now sitting on top of me, a leg on both sides of my waist to hold my body down, and he was holding my wrists to the ground on either side of my head. He looked down at me in silence.

Stitch walked over carrying an unconscious Jinx. "So are you going to make this easy, or am I going to have to knock you out too?" he said to me.

I held his gaze without moving, so they took that as a sign that I would cooperate. Gadget got off of me and offered a hand. I took it and he pulled me up with ease. They walked me to a black van and jumped in the back.

The driver looked back and saw Jinx and I. "Who are these two and why are they here?" he exclaimed.

"Just send a cleanup crew to the alley and take us back to headquarters," Stitch hissed.

The driver just looked at him, then turned back around and sped away while talking to someone on a cell phone.

I looked at the boys, waiting for them to explain who in the world they were and what they were going to do to us. They looked back at me in silence. Just then, Jinx began to wake up, allowing me to release the breath I hadn't realized I was holding.

Jinx opened her eyes and looked around and her eyes fell on the boys. As she was about to scream, I covered her mouth with my hand, not in the mood to hear my ears ringing.

"Look. I know you girls think that we are going to hurt you, but I promise you we won't. We just couldn't let you go after what you had seen," Stitch said with a surprisingly gentle tone. "Now you girls might as well fall asleep as it's going to be a long drive."

Without even realizing it, I had dozed off. I woke up to the van stopping. I looked around and saw that the boys were on either side of me and that Jinx was leaning against the wall on the other side of Stitch.

I carefully moved away from the boys and sat in the middle of the van. Then the doors opened letting a ray of sunshine to the dark van, causing everyone else to moan as they awoke. As my eyes adjusted to the light, I saw the driver standing there looking in on us. Now I took in his details. He looked like he was in his late twenties. He had dirty blonde hair and green eyes. The only notable thing about him was the scar running down his left arm. As I got out I gaped at what was before me.

I looked up at building before me, and I felt like I had found my true home. It looked like a black version of Dracula's castle, with gargoyles perched on the ledges.

The man looked at me and smiled. "My name's Dean. Welcome to Ravenwood Academy."
