49. Another Tragedy

"Alyssa! Get up!" 3 male voices exclaimed. I opened my eyes and saw the 3 boys I missed.

"Harry! Liam! Zayn! When did you get here? Where's Meg and Nikki?" I asked.

"They didn't want to come. They wanted to let us be with you through this and they send their prayers," Zayn said.

"Oh... is Danni here?" I asked.

"She's actually in the kitchen right now," Liam laughed and when he said that I bolted out of the door, down the stairs, and into the kitchen where I saw brown, noodley hair.

"DANNI!!!" I exclaimed. She turned around and her eyes got so wide.

"Alyssa!! Oh my goodness I'm so sorry about everything and I've been praying and I can't believe something so terrible could happen to such nice people," she said whilst hugging me with a few tears escaping.

"Don't cry! You're going to make me cry!" I laughed with a few tears also escaping. We pulled away and then I noticed that no one was home.

"Where is everyone?" I asked.

"They're all out in the barn. Alyssa... I think you should go out there," Louis spoke from the stairs. I was worried right when he said I had to be out there.

When I entered the barn, everyone was out there. When I mean everybody, I mean my parents, my siblings, Julia, Niall, and Julia's family. My mother had tear-stained cheeks; something was wrong.

"Mom? What's  going on?" I asked.

"Alyssa... we have to put Chip down," she said. Chip was our 32 year old Quarter Horse and he was my mom's horse. She had him since he was born- she owned his dam (mother) and sire (father) and was there for both of them at the end. I also learned how to ride on him, my mom rode him while she was pregnant with me and my siblings, he was in my parents' wedding pictures, and was there for everything.

"W-why?" I asked.

"He has a tumor in his nose and it's blocking his air passages. I don't want him to suffer. I know it's going to be hard," she started to cry and then so did I.

"When is the vet coming?" I asked.

"In about 20 minutes so we should start saying good-bye. How about we get all of the horses to say good-bye too? Chip is in the field under his tree so we can bring them all there; there's enough of us to hold two or three," my mom said.

"That's a good idea," I spoke through the tears. We all went to the fields and grabbed lead ropes (all of the horses had their halters on). Louis, Harry, Zayn, Liam, and Danni we were walking with us and Louis was on one side and my mother was on the other. I grabbed Tundra, Lottie, Rosie our Clydesdale, and Legend while my mother grabbed Bongo, Dreamer, and Scout. My dad caught Keeper, Bonnie and Clyde our two other Clydesdales, and Lady. Danni caught our little ponies Sabrina, Rudy, and Guinness while Liam grabbed Missy and Cody, Julia grabbed Sweet Pea, Kylee grabbed her horse Bullet, Greg grabbed my old western pleasure horse Grammy, Niall grabbed Dolly, Harry grabbed Katie, and Zayn grabbed Doux.

We all lead them to the back field with the older horses that included Celeste, Bear, Dude, Zeus, and Chip who was laying under his tree. I saw the tumor coming out of his nose and I started to cry. Tundra, Rosie, and Lottie nudged my nose while Legend was carrying his head low in sorrow. We all lead the horses to Chip who was laying down and they all sniffed him, nudged him, and groomed him. When all of the horses were done saying good-bye, they stepped back and laid down near the people who brought them to say good-bye to their friend.

I let my mother walk up to Chip and to say good-bye, then I went to him and whispered into his ear.

"I'll miss you sweet boy. I can't believe you and I knew each other since I was born! I remember all of our adventures and our runs through the field while mom was doing chores. I can't believe you're going to be gone and I don't want you to leave buddy. I wanted you to be there for my wedding and to see my kids grow up but I guess it was time. I know you're 32 and you lived a long life, thanks for being there for Mommy and I hope you have all of your family up there in heaven," I said into his ear. He looked at me and nudged me. I got up and let my father say good-bye then, Kylee and Greg, then Julia, and then her family because they knew him too. (Our mom's grew up together.)

When the vet came, my mother walked up to Chip but before anything could happen, she motioned me to come forward.

"Alyssa, I want you here with me," she whispered. I nodded and the vet, my mother, and knelled down next to Chip. The vet administered the first needle. The first one is just a sedative to calm the body and ease the pain. After about five minutes, he administered the second one and second by second, Chip's breath went down and I felt his heartbeat slow down too. My mom and I had tears streaming down our faces along with everyone else; the horses' heads were lowered in sorrow and then a second later, his breathing stopped along with his heartbeat. Our Chip-A-Roo was gone and not forgotten.

"He's gone and he's no longer suffering," the vet said.

"Thank you Dr. Oliver," my mom said.

"Would you like to cremate him?" The vet asked.

"Yes please," my mother replied with a nod. Her and the vet walked away while all of us were standing there. I pulled my pocket knife out and walked to his mane, cut 3 locks from it, walked to his tail, cut 3 locks from it, then walked to his face. I bent down and gave the lifeless Chip one final kiss on the nose and walked away.

One of my best friends was gone forever.

When you loose a horse, a piece of you goes with them. When they cross 'The Rainbow Bridge' they come back as they were in their prime years. They have green pastures and bubbling creeks and a nice stable to rest in.

When my mom came back, a truck and trailer was here to take away Chip's lifeless body away. I had to walk away, I couldn't see him being taken away. I ran away to my house and I heard Louis yelling my name. I ran as fast as I could up into the house, up the stairs, and into my room where I locked myself in there for who knows how long. Louis knocked on my door for a few minutes until I heard Julia say that I would come out when I was ready.

**Author's Note About the Chapter**

I completely bawled my eyes out writing this chapter! If you don't cry while reading this, you need Jesus. I wrote this chapter because before Christmas, my friend had to put her chestnut Appendix (1/2 Quarter Horse, 1/2 Thoroughbred) down. His name was Chip and he was 32 years old like it said in the chapter. He was old and a tumor was coming out of his nose. I don't really know what happened but he was my favorite horse on her property. She didn't cremate him like they did in the story so she watched him being taken away. I wasn't there when it all happened but I miss him a lot. I still think about him from time to time  and smile about all of the good times I had with him.
