12. Chapter Twelve

“You’re going out?”

I glanced to my left to find Kel stood in the doorway, a DVD in her hand. Continuing to apply some eyeliner I said, “Yeah, it shouldn’t be for long though.”

“But I rented out The Holiday. I thought we were going to watch it together?” Kel pouted.

Brushing my hair, I said, “We can when I get back. I won’t be long, I promise.” I searched my makeup bag. “Do you know where my lip gloss is?”

Kel narrowed her brown eyes at me suspiciously. “Are you going out on a date?”

“No,” I answered quickly.

“Then why are you getting all slutted up?”

Flushing I laughed. “I am not getting ‘slutted up’.”

Kel arched an eyebrow. “You’re wearing the top that makes your boobs look twice as big and those are your best jeans.” She came over and rummaged around in the cabinet. “Here,” she said handing me my lip gloss.

“So what if I am?” I put some lip gloss on and smacked my lips together.

Crossing her arms, Kel gazed at me disapprovingly. “You’re meeting Seth, aren’t you?”

“Yes,” I said not meeting her eye.

“Nova!” she cried exasperated.

“I still care for him, Kel. I can’t help how I feel.”  Brushing passed her I picked my jacket and bag up. “I won’t be long.”

“I would say don’t do anything stupid, but you already are.”

I met Seth at the Slanted Oak again. He was already there and had claimed two stools at the bar. I sat down beside him and Seth’s hazel eyes drank in the sight of me.

“Nova, you look . . . you look beautiful.”

“Thanks,” I murmured ordering a beer. “Where’s Colt?”

“He’s at home watching TV.”

“What about Zane?”

“He’s at a club. Why didn’t you go back to his place?”

I frowned. “What?”

Seth suddenly seemed fascinated by his pint. “That time when Zane invited you back to his place, why did you say no?”

“I’m not the kind of girl that would sleep with someone just because they bought me a meal,” I replied, annoyed at Seth’s question. Drinking some beer, I said, “I thought you knew that.”

“I do know that.” Seth seemed alarmed to have offended me. “I didn’t mean . . . I’m sorry, I shouldn’t have asked.”

Neither of us spoke for a while and I listened to the music that was playing. It was the latest song from a boy-band that Kel liked. I hated it.

“So why are we here?” I asked after a while, wanting to speed things along so that I could get back to Kel.

Seth surprised me by resting a hand on my knee. “I want to know if there’s a chance that we can get back together. I still love you, Nova, and I know that you still feel something for me because that kiss that you keep calling a mistake showed that you do.”

Swallowing nervously I replied, “If I said yes, and we did get back together, I would need to be absolutely certain that you wouldn’t hit me again.”

“I never meant to hurt you, Nova. I’m so sorry for what happened. It will never happen again, I swear it.” Seth stroked my hair gently.

“I can’t be hurt like that again, Seth. It nearly destroyed me.” At the time I’d just been glad that Seth was taking his anger out on me and not Colt. I’d given him countless second chances only for Seth to make the same mistake over and over. It had been Kel that had made me realise that things had to change.

Tears welled in Seth’s eyes and he rested his forehead on mine. “I know and I will never forgive myself for what I did to you.” His voice was quiet and full of remorse. “Come back to me, Nova,” he said huskily.

Closing my eyes I felt my breathing hitch as Seth’s hand moved up my thigh. “Kiss me,” I whispered, suddenly full of longing.

Seth’s lips met mine and I drew him closer, pressing myself against his chest. The kiss was passionate and left me gasping for air. My heart was pounding in my chest. Seth pulled my stool nearer and slid a hand under my top. His touch was cold and I shuddered.

“Not here.” I was horribly aware of everyone else in the pub.

“Come back to mine,” Seth said cupping my cheek.

Hesitating I considered his offer but I didn’t get a chance to reply because Seth was staring into the distance looking extremely pissed off.

“Zane?” I asked.

Seth nodded. “I have to go. I’m sorry, Nova. Can I see you tomorrow?” He didn’t wait for me to speak. Kissing me quickly he said, “I love you” before leaving.

“Wow, I thought you were going to be longer than that,” said Kel upon my return to the flat.

Dropping down beside her on the sofa I replied, “Zane summoned Seth.”

Kel twisted some aqua hair around a finger. “So what happened?”

“We kissed.”

“You’re back together?”

“We haven’t defined our relationship, but yes.”

With a sigh, Kel got to her feet and put the DVD on. “I’ve only been looking out for you, Nova.”

“I’m beyond grateful for that but I know what I’m doing.”

At least I hoped I did.
