10. Chapter Ten

I was sat cross-legged on the floor, like everyone else. We were in a small hall which had definitely seen better days; the ceiling was cracked and the wallpaper was peeling away from the walls. It also smelled of damp and the floorboards groaned worryingly whenever someone moved. I think the hall used to be one of those youth places. Kel and a very smiley Dylan were sat on either side of me.

“You seem happy,” I said.

Dylan grinned. “I got an A on my coursework.”

“Congratulations.”

“Thanks, you know I was thinking of maybe going out to celebrate . . .”

Dylan was cut off when Colt suddenly appeared.

“Nova!” he cried, jumping up and down excitedly. “Seth said I could sit with you!”

Raising my eyebrows in surprise, I glanced at the front of the room where Seth was stood in Zane’s shadow. He was concentrating on Zane and seemed oblivious to everything else.

“Well come sit down then.”

Colt hesitated and Kel and Dylan shuffled away from me to give Colt some space. However, Zane was about to start the meeting so I pulled Colt down onto my lap. After planting a wet kiss on his cheek, I rested my chin on Colt’s shoulder and wrapped my arms around him.

“You know,” Colt was whispering because Zane was talking. “Seth asked me to ask you to have dinner with us tonight. He wants to thank you for taking me to Disneyland.”

I was so shocked that it took a moment for words to sprout from my mouth. “Are you sure your brother hasn’t been replaced with a robot?”

“I’m sure. So what do you think? Please say yes, Nova. It would mean so much to us.”

Thinking, I let my gaze drift from Zane to Seth. His expression was blank.

“Nova said yes.” Colt beamed when Seth approached us at the end of the meeting.

Zane hadn’t said anything of interest so there was nothing for us to worry about.

Raising an eyebrow in surprise, Seth said, “That’s fantastic. Are you ready to go?”

Everyone else was leaving and Kel gave me a look as if to say ‘I hope you know what you’re doing’. Dylan wished me a good weekend before filing out of the doors with everyone else.

Nodding I replied, “Sure, let’s go.”

Seth reached out a hand to touch my shoulder but then stopped. His expression, which had been full of joy, dropped like a stone.

“What is it?” I asked, stroking Colt’s hair absently.

Seth’s scowl was one that would have made Jordan proud. “Zane,” he growled furiously. “I’m sorry but I’ll have to meet you there.”

Seth strode over to where Zane was waiting impatiently and then they both disappeared.

“So,” I said dipping my spoon into my ice cream. “Are there any girls you like?”

Colt looked like a deer caught in headlights. “What? No . . . No there aren’t.”

Smiling I took his hand in mine and squeezed it. “I was just teasing.” I retracted my hand and ate more ice cream, savouring the taste. “Is Seth better now? Does he still get angry?”

“He’s not as bad as he used to be. He changed when you left.” Colt glanced up at me full of optimism. “Are the two of you getting back together?”

I stared at the remains of my dessert. When I had been with Seth it had been as if Colt, Seth and I were one big happy family, and Colt missed that.

“Sorry I’m late.” Seth was stood beside the table, annoyance sketched onto his face.

Wiping my mouth with a napkin I replied, “You’re just in time to pay for the bill.”

Much to my surprise, Seth went and paid for the meals. I arched an eyebrow at Colt who smiled. Standing up, I jumped when Seth’s fingertips touched my skin. He helped me put my jacket on.

“Thank you for paying,” I said as we all made our way outside.

The night sky was clear so I gazed up at the stars. A wild wind was blowing and it sent my hair across my face. Seth gently brushed the hair behind my ears.

“Nova, come back to ours. Please, Nova. We could watch a movie.” Colt transformed into a puppy and gazed at me longingly.

Refraining from sighing I rubbed my temple. “I don’t know. I’ve got work tomorrow.” Colt continued to give me puppy dog eyes and eventually I gave in. “Fine, but I can’t stay too late.”

Something soft stroked my arm and I slowly opened my eyes. I could hear a beating noise coming from nearby but it was muffled. Someone was lying on top of me. Looking down I found Colt’s head resting on a cushion on my stomach. Someone shifted beneath me and I turned my gaze upwards. Seth was smiling down at me, his hazel eyes warm.

“Hey,” he said.

Staring at Seth in confusion I asked, “What time is it?”

“Nearly quarter to nine.”

Swearing, I untangled myself from the mass of bodies. “I’m going to be late.” I rushed around gathering my handbag and jacket together.

“Wait,” said Seth standing up. “We need to talk.”

“Not now,” I replied distractedly, running towards the door.

“Nova . . .”

Bolting down the corridor I sprinted as quickly as I could to the flat I shared with Kel. She was still in bed when I burst into the bedroom. Grabbing fresh clothes from the wardrobe I got changed and washed before brushing my teeth and taking a breakfast bar from the kitchen. I ended up getting to the comic book shop just as the Wonder Woman clock struck nine. Peter glanced up at me and scowled.

“You’re cutting it a bit fine, aren’t you?”

Apologising, I dumped my bag in the staff room. Taking my place behind the counter I exhaled slowly. I didn’t know how I’d ended up staying at Seth’s overnight. The last thing I remembered was sitting on the sofa watching a film with Seth and Colt.

“I’ll be in the back,” Peter told me grumpily.

My phone started vibrating in my pocket and I withdrew it. Seth was telephoning me. I ended the call and sighed. I had the feeling that it was going to be a very long day.
