16. Chapter Sixteen

Seth had wanted me to go back to his place but I didn’t. I hadn’t seen Kel properly for ages and I didn’t want her to feel neglected. She was lying on the living room floor surrounded by textbooks when I got to the flat.

“Been boxing?” she asked taking in my wet hair.

Blushing slightly I replied, “Yeah. Dylan found me there.” I had showered and changed out of my gym clothes. I’d also had to lock up the gym. Fortunately I knew where Richard kept the keys.

“What did he want?” Kel chewed on the end of her pen absently.

“To invite me to dinner at his house,” I said walking into the kitchen. “Do you want tea?”

“Yes please. He fancies you.”

Blinking, I thought that I must have misheard Kel. “What did you say?”

Lifting her gaze, she said, “Dylan fancies you.”

“No he doesn’t,” I replied as I filled the kettle with water.

“Fine, don’t believe me. It’s not like anything can happen between the two of you anyway now that you’re back with Seth.”

“Seth cooked me lunch,” I told her, grabbing two mugs from the cupboard. “It was actually really nice.”

Not at all impressed, Kel sat up and brushed a lock of aqua hair from her face. “Big whoop.”

“Oh come on, don’t be like that, Kel.”

Glaring at me she demanded, “What do you want me to say? He beat you, Nova.”

“I haven’t forgotten,” I said. I got the milk from the fridge. “Why can’t you just be happy for me?”

Kel cried out in frustration and gathered all her books together. A piece of paper drifted over to me. I picked it up. It was a cinema receipt for the day before.

“Who’d you go to the cinema with?” I asked handing Kel the paper.

Snatching it from my grasp she stood up. “I went with Mark. It was a date.”

“Kel he’s too old for you.”

Her brown eyes were full of hate. “Well maybe if the people that are our age weren’t all in love with you, I wouldn’t be dating a forty year old!”

Shocked I watched as she stormed into the bedroom, slamming the door shut behind her.

“Back for more are you?” asked Seth with a grin when he opened the front door of his apartment to find me waiting outside.

Throwing myself into his arms I started crying.

“Hey, what’s wrong?” Seth closed the front door and took me over to the sofa.

“Kel and I had a fight,” I said.

Seth sat me down and stroked my hair. “You two never fight.”

“I know that’s what makes this so bad.”

“What was it about?” he asked, gently rubbing my back.

Closing my eyes I replied, “Something stupid.”

“Do you want to stay here tonight?”

“Yes please.”

I lay awake in Seth’s arms for hours. I felt awful about the fight. The fact that Kel was dating a forty year old made me uncomfortable but maybe I should have just been happy that she’d found someone that cared about her. Mark was a good guy. He would look after her.

Rolling onto my side I gazed at Seth. I wished that Kel could see that he had changed. Seth was a better person now. I touched the stubble that was growing on his chin, wondering what would have happened if Seth hadn’t found me.

Kel had to be wrong about Dylan. True he flushed red and seemed slightly nervous around me sometimes but I’d assumed that was because he wasn’t completely comfortable around girls.

Pushing all thoughts from my head I tried to fall asleep.

Kel wasn’t at the flat when Seth teleported me there in the morning. She wasn’t there either when I got back from work. I had just enough time to write Kel a note apologising before Dylan arrived.

“Hi, are you ready to go?” he asked. He was dressed in jeans and a striped shirt.

“Yes, let’s go.”

I locked the front door and we went outside.

“Shall I fly us?” Dylan’s grey eyes were bright.

Laughing nervously I said, “Okay but don’t you dare drop me.”

Dylan held out a hand. “I promise I won’t.”

Taking his hand I grasped it tightly, though it was slightly sweaty.

Seconds later we were flying through the air.
