7. Chapter Seven

Something soft brushed my cheek and my eyes fluttered open.

“Sorry, did I wake you?” Seth was sat on the edge of the bed beside me.

Covering my mouth with a hand I yawned and said, “I was just resting my eyes. Have you slept?”

“No, it’s not even midnight yet.”

Colt muttered in his sleep. His arms were wrapped around me. I carefully slipped out of his grasp and sat up.

“Are you alright? Do you want something to eat or drink?” asked Seth.

“No, I’m fine thanks.” I rubbed my tired eyes.

Seth placed a hand on my arm. “Thank you so much for this. Colt’s been pretty down lately and I know it’s my fault. You’re so good to him and I’m really grateful.”

“Do you think he had a good day?”

Laughing Seth replied, “Nova, I’ve never seen him so happy. I can’t say that I’m looking forward to another day of being dragged around and forced to go on all the rides though.”

“Forced?” I smiled. “You were the one that insisted we go on It’s a Small World.”

“No, that was you.”

“I don’t think so,” I replied with a grin.

Seth gazed at me with his hazel eyes. “I want to take you somewhere.”

I was surprised. “What about Colt?”

It was too late. Seth had teleported us to a bridge. Shivering at the cold I raised my eyes to the sky. It was a cloudy night so I couldn’t see the moon or stars. Fortunately I was still in my clothes and not pyjamas.

“Where are we?”

“The Musée d’Orsay is just over there,” Seth told me pointing.

Reaching out a hand I brushed my fingertips over one of the many locks that adorned the rails of the bridge. “I remember,” I said.

The locks were put there by people in love. Some had initials on. Seth and I had added our own lock to the bridge.

“Here is ours.” Seth’s voice was quiet as he knelt down.

The golden lock was buried among a mass of other similar looking locks, but the writing on it was mine. I’d used a permanent marker to write our initials; N.C + S. E, Nova Caulfield and Seth Evershall.

“Why did you bring me here?” I whispered as the wind tugged at my hair.

Standing back up, Seth cupped my cheek with one hand and rested the other on my neck. “Do you really not know? My love for you is as strong today as it was the day we bought that lock, Nova.”

Tears filled my eyes. “Seth . . .”

“I was a jerk to you. I’m so sorry for what I did.” His voice broke and he stared into my eyes. “Please give me a second chance, Nova. I’m not asking you to forgive me, just to let us go back to how things were.”

Pulling away from Seth in annoyance I crossed my arms. “A jerk? You beat me, Seth. You made me think that I deserved it as well. I hated myself for making you so angry all the time. I nearly . . . I was going to cut myself but Kel walked in and stopped me.”

Gaping at me in shock Seth said, “I had no idea. Nova, I . . . I’m so sorry. I never meant to hurt you.”

“Can we go?” The words came out colder than I intended and Seth flinched.

He silently put a hand on my shoulder and teleported us back to the hotel. Ignoring him I picked up my pyjamas and went into the bathroom. As soon as the door closed I let the emotion I had been hiding surface. I sobbed quietly to myself and rested my forehead on the cool glass of the mirror. After I had calmed down I brushed my teeth and undressed. When I exited the bathroom it was to find that Seth had disappeared. I climbed into the bed and kissed Colt’s hair, drawing him close.

Seth hadn’t reappeared by the morning so I took Colt around the many rides and shops by myself. I was quiet and didn’t talk much. Seth’s words had affected me more than I had known because all I could think about were the fun things Seth and I had done when we’d been a couple. I knew I still cared for Seth but did I love him?

It was nearly evening by the time Colt and I left the park. Seth was waiting for us at the exit.

“Seth, where were you?” asked Colt.

His eyes not meeting mine, he replied, “There was something I had to do. I’m sorry, Colt.”

“We bought you this.” Colt rummaged around in one of the many carrier bags he was holding and withdrew a pair of Mickey Mouse ears.

Seth accepted them and smiled. “Thank you.” He glanced at me. “Are you ready to go?” I nodded and Seth teleported us to his flat.

“Thank you so much, Nova.” Colt hugged me tightly.

Squeezing him I replied, “You’re welcome, sweetie. It’s late. You should start getting ready for bed.”

“I’ll take Nova to her flat,” said Seth without even asking me if I wanted him to. “You’d better be in bed when I get back.”

Colt disappeared to his room and Seth placed a hand on my arm. In the blink of an eye we were in my and Kel’s flat.

“Thank you for looking after Colt today.” Seth put his hand in his pockets and lifted his gaze to meet mine. “I shouldn’t have taken you to the bridge. I’m sorry.”

My stomach went all wobbly, like it used to when I had started falling in love with Seth.

That was when I did something stupid.

Leaning forwards I kissed Seth. It was a kiss that might have turned into something more if Kel hadn’t entered the flat at that moment. Seth and I jumped apart, both of us breathless. My heart was pounding in my chest and my cheeks were bright red. Kel gaped at us, her mouth in a comical O shape. Seth glanced at me before vanishing.

Holding up a hand to stop Kel from ranting I snapped, “Just don’t, okay.” Picking up my bags I went into the bedroom where I buried myself under my duvet, wondering what the hell I had just done.
