9. Chapter Nine

Excusing myself, I went to the bathroom before dessert was served. Kel’s father had joined us for the meal and, as usual, he had made me laugh. He was a kind man, as was his wife. I opened the bathroom door to find Seth blocking my way.

“We need to talk.”

“No we don’t,” I said, trying to get passed him.

Seth grabbed my arms and pinned me to the wall. “Yes we do,” he growled.

“Let go of me.”

Seth’s hazel eyes bore into mine. “Nova, we need to talk about the kiss.”

“You mean the time when you forced yourself on me?”

“No, the time when you forced yourself on me,” he replied amused.

Blushing furiously I said, “That was a mistake.”

Seth’s expression dropped. “How can you say that? Didn’t you feel something when we kissed? Don’t you feel something now?” He pressed his chest against mine and leaned forwards until his mouth was nearly touching my own.

I considered using my second power to free myself but decided against it. No one could know I had two powers, no one. My heart was pounding in my chest and it was hard to breathe. Finding my gaze drawn to Seth’s lips I whispered. “Seth, I . . .”

“Nova!” called Kel from downstairs. “You’re going to miss the cake!”

“I have to go.”

Seth stepped backwards and let me walk around him. I hesitated at the top of the stairs.

“Are you coming?”

Seth nodded. “I’ll be down in a moment.”

Going down the staircase I released a shaky breath and resisted the urge to glance back.

“Are you ready?”

Pulling my jacket on I said, “Where are we going?”

“To a meeting,” replied Seth straightening my collar.

“What is the meeting for?”

Colt grinned. “It’s for people like us, Nova.”

“Take my hand,” said Seth, who was carrying a backpack.

Warily I did as he asked. Colt grabbed my other hand and suddenly we were in a park. Birds were singing and I could hear laughter coming from nearby. We were amongst some trees but I could see a lake in the distance. A jogger ran by engrossed in her music.

“You can teleport?” I gasped in amazement.

Seth smiled. “Come on, we’re going to be late.”

We headed towards the lakeside where a group of people had gathered. There weren’t many of them, only eight or so.

“Hi everyone,” Seth said. “This is Nova.”

They all turned to face me and I waved shyly. Colt, Seth and I sat down.

“We’re having a picnic?” I asked Seth as he started withdrawing food and drink from his bag.

Nodding he replied, “We don’t usually, but seeing as it is Colt and Kel’s birthdays soon we thought we would do something different for a change.”

I focused on the girl Seth had indicated. Kel appeared to be around the same age as me and was slightly overweight but pretty. She was wearing a floral dress and a crochet bobble hat. Kel’s brown eyes met mine and she grinned.

“Hey, Nova, come sit next to me,” said Kel patting the grass beside her.

Seth’s gaze stalked me as I walked over to Kel.

“Hi,” I said timidly. “Happy birthday!”

“It’s not my birthday yet but thanks.” Kel handed me a plastic cup full of lemonade. “Are you staying at Seth’s?”

Sipping at my drink I replied, “Yeah, he found me. He’s been really kind.”

“He’s hot don’t you think?” asked Kel cheekily.

I felt my cheeks redden. “Umm, I suppose so.”

Kel giggled and surprised me by pulling me into a hug. “I’ve got the feeling that we’re going to be best friends.”

“It’s your fault, you know.”

Glancing up from the crossword I’d been doing I found Jordan stood by the counter glaring at me. It was only the second time he had spoken to me. Dylan must have gone to the toilet because he wasn’t in the room.

I blinked in surprise. “What’s my fault?”

“He got beaten up because he was coming to see you.” Jordan’s voice was deeper and more menacing than Dylan’s.

“I’m sorry but it’s not my fault. Blame the thugs that did it to him.”

Narrowing his grey eyes at me, Jordan opened his mouth to no doubt say something insulting, but Dylan appeared so Jordan went over to the comics, and returned to ignoring me.

“Hey, Dylan, how are you?” Kel had healed him but I was still worried.

Grinning, Dylan rested his hands on the counter. “I’m fine. How are you, Nova? I had fun at Kel’s party. It was kind of her mum to have me for dinner.”

“Kel’s parents are great.”

“Do you see your parents a lot?” asked Dylan.

Tears filled my eyes and I looked away, not wanting him to see. “No, no I don’t.”

Dylan must have sensed how upset I was because he placed his hand on mine. Meeting his eyes I gave him a small smile.

The door opened and Dylan jumped away from me as if he’s been stung. Maybe he’d been worried that it was Seth but it wasn’t. It was Peter. Refraining from sighing I got back to work.
