15. Chapter Fifteen

The hair on the back of my neck stood on end and I looked up to find a pretty blonde staring at me. Uncomfortable in her piercing gaze I concentrated on Slim and Mad Mel who were sat at a table together. Deciding to be overweight for the day, Slim was at least double the size of Mel who was hunched over the table. I thought briefly about Mel’s prophecy.  When the clock chimes ten the door will slam and the mirror will break, leaving pain and frustration in its wake. It hadn’t happened yet but it was possible that it might not.

“Are you ready to go?” asked Seth rousing me from my thoughts. He smiled at me eager to leave.

Noticing that the blonde had disappeared I said, “Sure, I’ll just tell Peter that I’m going.” I informed Peter that I was taking my break before grabbing my jacket and bag. Walking back into the shop I laced my fingers through Seth’s. “So where are we going?” I asked.

I blinked and we were suddenly in Seth’s flat.

“What not Italy or Spain?” I laughed.

Smiling Seth pressed his lips to mine and led me over to the table. “I thought it might be nice for me to cook you a meal.”

My eyes fell on the table which had steaming plates of food on it. There were also flowers and candles. “You did this? You actually cooked for me?”

Seth pulled a chair out for me and I sat down.

“You didn’t have to go to so much trouble.”

“I want to prove to you how much I’ve changed.”

Feeling impressed, I replied, “You don’t need to prove anything to me, Seth.”

We started eating and I was surprised at how tasty the food was.

“You did all this by yourself?” I asked when we had finished.

“I practised it a few times to make sure that I wouldn’t give you food poisoning.”

“Well it was delicious. Thank you, Seth.”

“Have you got time for dessert?”

I glanced at my watch. I had ten minutes. “It will have to be quick.”

Seth took my hand and the next thing I knew we were in his bedroom on the bed.

“Hey!” I cried when he yanked my top off. “When you said dessert I thought you meant ice cream or something.”

Kissing my neck, Seth said, “There’s ice cream in the freezer. We can use some if you want?”

“No, I don’t want to.” Pushing Seth off me I held him at arm’s length. “This should be special. We should take our time.”

He trailed a cool finger from the nape of my neck to my stomach. “If it’s with you then it will be special.”

I hesitated and Seth took the opportunity to kiss me again. Breathless I pulled away. “I have to go to work,” I said as Seth’s lips moved to my jaw.

“Stay.”

“I can’t.” It took a considerable amount of effort but I managed to get out from underneath Seth. Putting my top back on I said, “I want to stay, I really do, but I have to go. Thank you for lunch.”

Before Seth had a chance to protest I was gone.

The punching bag was taking a beating. I didn’t know why. I mean it wasn’t as if I was particularly angry about anything. Pausing to squirt some water into my mouth I gazed around the empty gym. It belonged to Richard. I had spent a lot of time here when I’d first broken up with Seth. Richard had taught me how to protect myself. I wondered where he was; Richard usually stayed in the gym until eight o’clock at night but tonight he was nowhere to be seen.  Sweat rolled down my temples and I returned to hitting the punching bag.

A few minutes later I heard a voice call, “Hello? Nova, are you here?” Dylan’s head popped around the door. I knew it was him because his voice was a lot friendlier than Jordan’s. “Found you.” He smiled.

Removing my boxing gloves I watched as Dylan walked up to me. “Is everything okay?” I asked, panting slightly.

Dylan’s grey eyes took in my crop top and tracksuit bottoms. His face flushed slightly when he caught sight of my bare stomach. “I went around to your flat but you weren’t there. Kel said that you might be here.”

Drinking some water I wiped my mouth with the back of my hand. “So what’s up?”

“You didn’t tell me that you box,” replied Dylan. “Boxing counts as a hobby, you know.”

I shrugged. “I must have forgotten. Why did you want to see me?” I asked wiping my sweaty skin with a towel.

“I was wondering if you wanted to have dinner at my house tonight.”

“Not tonight; I need to shower but how about tomorrow?”

Nodding enthusiastically, Dylan grinned. “That’s, I mean, that will be great. Shall I come to the comic shop at closing time?”

I was worried that he might get beaten up again so I said, “No, meet me at my flat.”

“Sure, that sounds good. Do you want me to fly you home?”

“No thanks I’m going to stay here for a while longer. Thanks for the offer though.”

“Okay I’ll see you tomorrow then. Goodnight, Nova.” Dylan smiled at me warmly before leaving.

Pulling my gloves back on, I threw some punches at the bag. I had mixed feelings about the dinner at Dylan’s house; Dylan was nice but Jordan hated me. It was going to be one interesting meal.

“Are you hiding from me?”

I whirled around to find Seth sat on the edge of the boxing ring.

“I hope you weren’t pretending that the punching bag is me,” he said with a smirk.

Moving over to Seth I took my gloves off saying, “Actually I was.”

Seth stood up and wrapped an arm around my waist, drawing me close. “Was my cooking that bad?”

“It was terrible,” I whispered gently biting his bottom lip. “You’ve put me off food for life.”

“That’s a shame because we never got around to having dessert.” Seth pulled my hair from its ponytail and nibbled my earlobe. “And I’m starving.”

“Not now, Seth. I’m all hot and sweaty”

Meeting my gaze, he said huskily, “That’s just how I like you.”
