8. Chapter Eight

The next evening I rushed home from work. I had a quick shower and gathered Kel’s presents together. It was Kel’s nineteenth birthday and it had become tradition for me to go over to her parents for dinner to celebrate. I was just about to leave when there was a knock on the door. I opened it to find a bloodied and battered Dylan. At least I assumed it was Dylan. He was barely able to stand.

“Oh my God,” I gasped, covering my mouth with my hand. “Dylan, what happened?” Rushing to his side I helped him into the flat.

With a groan Dylan fell onto the couch. Blood was streaming into his right eye. I handed Dylan some tissue and sat down beside him. Touching his face I gently examined the damage. His left eye was swollen shut, his nose looked like it was broken and there were numerous cuts on his face. Dylan winced in pain.

“Sorry,” I said brushing his hair from his face. “Who did this to you?”

Clutching at his chest, Dylan gasped. “I didn’t see. I was on my way to the comic book shop when someone jumped me. I was hoping to catch you before you left.”

“How did you know where I live?”

Dylan gave a groan. “Kel said that she’s a healer and that if I ever need help I should come here.”

“She’s not here at the moment. I was just on my way to her parents’ house. I can take you.”

Dylan nodded before wincing. “Yeah, that would be great.”

“Okay, do you think you can stand up?” I asked, getting to my feet. “If you can I’ll run us there otherwise I’ll . . . I’ll ask Seth to teleport us.”

Crying out in pain Dylan struggled to stand up. Reaching out I grabbed his hands. Dylan fell on me making me stumble. His face was barely inches from mine. Blood dribbled from the side of his mouth.

“Well that was embarrassing.” He coughed into his hand, painting it red.

I wrapped an arm around his waist. “Hang on, where’s Jordan?” I’d only just realised that he wasn’t there.

“He didn’t want to go to the shop.”

“Do you want me to call him?”

Dylan shook his head then cursed. “No, I’ll do it.”

“Okay, I’ll call Seth then.” Resisting the urge to pull out my hair and scream, I withdrew my phone from my pocket. Talking to Seth was the last thing I wanted to do right then but I had no choice; Dylan would definitely pass out if I ran us to Kel’s parents’ house. Dylan perched himself on the arm of the sofa and searched for his phone.

“I’ll call Seth from my room,” I told him giving him some privacy.

It took me a moment to work up the nerve to dial Seth’s number. He answered on the first ring.

“Before you say anything,” I cried, my words coming out so quickly that they hardly made sense. “I’m not ringing about what happened. I’m calling because I need you to teleport Dylan and me to Kel’s parents’ house.”

“I’ll be there soon.”

Hanging up I slid my phone back into my pocket. Running my hand through my hair I caught sight of myself in the mirror and was horrified to find that my clothes and face were covered in Dylan’s blood.

“Oh crap,” I said yanking off my top. I searched for a clean one in the wardrobe and jumped when someone wrapped their arms around me from behind.

“I thought you called because you wanted a lift?” Seth chuckled nuzzling my neck.

Struggling out of his grasp I hissed. “Get off!” I elbowed Seth and he released me. I hurriedly pulled on a t-shirt before turning to face him. “How dare you.”

“What’s that on your face? Is it blood?” Seth’s hazel eyes widened in alarm and he cupped my cheeks. “Nova, what happened?”

I slapped his hand away. “It’s not my blood. It’s Dylan’s. Hey!” I’d shouted because Seth had smothered my mouth with his.

“Nova? What’s-” Dylan had appeared in the doorway and he blanched.

Shoving Seth away I wiped my mouth before slapping him. He clenched his fists angrily.

“Dylan, I’m sure you know Seth from the meetings. Seth, Dylan.” I retrieved my bag from the other room. “Can we go now?” I asked Seth.

Grabbing my hand, Seth waited for Dylan to touch my shoulder. In the blink of an eye we were stood in front of a two storey brick house. Dylan slumped against the wall. I knocked on the door aware that Seth’s eyes were following me.

“Hey, Nova,” said Kel opening the door. “You’re late.”

Gesturing for her to come outside I whispered, “We have a problem.”

“Oh my God,” she said upon seeing Dylan’s beaten form. “Take him upstairs.”

Seth teleported Dylan inside the house and Kel grabbed my wrist.

“What is Seth doing here?” she hissed.

Groaning I rubbed my temple. “I called him because Dylan was hurt too much for me to run us both here.”

“He’s making lusty eyes at you.”

“Lusty eyes?”

Kel gave me a look as if to say ‘you know what I mean’.

“Let’s go upstairs.” I sighed.

Kel healed Dylan who washed his face in the bathroom.

“Thanks,” he said when he returned to Kel’s bedroom. “I should probably go.”

A knock on the door made us all jump but it was only Kel’s mum, Mrs Hall.

“Kelly-Anne, aren’t you going to introduce me to your friends? I didn’t hear you all come in.” She smiled at us all.

“Oh right, well you know Nova. This is Dylan and that’s Seth.”

Mrs Hall nodded to us all. “Are you going to be staying for dinner?” she asked the guys.

“Seth has to go,” said Kel narrowing her eyes at him.

He smirked. “No I don’t.”

“I’m sure that Zane or Colt need you,” I said crossing my arms to show that I was still pissed off at him for kissing me.

“No they don’t.”

“Excellent,” replied Mrs Hall. “The more the merrier.”

Kel and I exchanged a glance, thinking that in this case the more was definitely not the merrier.
