1. Wearing a Mask

I’m hiding.  I’m hiding behind a mask.

It’s a mask of damask silk lace and glitter,

with its glued on smile that never moves.

It is adorned with frippery of every kind.

It is the mask the world sees as me.

I step out the door mask firmly in place,

with my war paint on underneath.

Every day the plastered smile stares at me.

It stares back at me from every mirror,

I hate the mask so much but I can’t escape it.

It sits there glued to my face no one sees it

and no one can see the cracks in the mask.

They don’t want to see behind the mask,

the mask isn’t theirs and trouble lies behind.

No one wants trouble best to leave the mask.

The mask is me. It is the me I want people to see.

It is the me I want people to believe I am,

but the mask isn’t me it is what I feel or hope.

It is an illusion. It is the way I act with people,

it is a cover that I use to hide the truth.

I’m wearing a mask and I hide behind it.

It’s a mask of damask silk lace and glitter,

with its glued on smile that never moves.

It is adorned with frippery of every kind.

It is the mask the world sees as me.
