Pitch Slapped

Delany was a freshman in high school and orientation was where clubs recruited the 'freshies'. Many clubs asked for her to come join but they all seemed to dorky like the chess club or book club. She didn't want to be a nerd like in middle school. She wanted to stand out, shine. That's when one specific club caught her eye, not just because of the guy recruiting with his brunette curls. Just the idea of it all. Being noticed.

19. They Don't Know About Us

"Who's next?" Cowell asked as Niall left the stage. Nobody rose their hand. I wouldn't raise mine either after hearing all this positive feedback. No one wants to be the first person to get negative feedback I mean-

"Delany, how about you?" Cowell asked.

I smiled and walked on to the stage everyone was sitting in their seats with all of their eyes on me waiting for my performance.

"I'll be singing Begin Again by Delany Jones." I smiled.

"Took a deep breath in the mirror.  He didn't like it when I wore high heels, but I do." I began the song. Everyone was on the edge of their seat. I know what they were all thinking lets see if the new girl can actually sing with her own song and on stage alone. I was thinking the same thing. Stop Delany you've got this. The chorus is coming up and you nail every time. Let's go.

"And you throw your head back laughing like a little kid. I think it's strange that you think I'm funny cause he never did and I've been spending the last eight months thinking all love ever does is break and burn and end, but on a Wednesday in a cafe I watched it begin again." I nailed it. I finished the rest of the song and everyone stood up and clapped some even cheered. The only person who wasn't standing was Cher and Harry. What was wrong with Harry?

"Genius." Cowell said once everyone quieted down. "I loved it. Every teenager now a days is going through heartbreak and thinks they will never find love again. I loved the song. Since today is Thursday  who was the boy in the cafe?" Cowell asked a big smile on his face.

"No one." I smiled.

"If you say so." He laughed.

I walked back and Harry didn't even look at me. What's his problem?

"Harry you're up." Cowell called.

Harry stood and walked on stage. He didn't go directly to the mic. He walked back stage and came out with a stool. He set it down and grabbed the mic.

"I will be singing They Don't Know About Us by Harry Styles."

"People say we shouldn't be together. We're too young to know about forever, but I say they don't know what they're talk-talk-talking about." He started off. I glanced at Cher and she couldn't stop smiling. Was this song about her?

"Cause this love is only getting stronger, so I don't want to wait any longer. I just wanna tell that world that you're mine, girl." He belted out the lyrics.

"Oh, they don't know about the things we do, the don't know about the 'I love you's', but I bet you if the only knew they would be jealous of us. They don't know about the up all night's, they don't know I've waited all my life just to fall in love it feels so right. Baby, they don't know about, they don't know about us." He sang looking at me. The song was beautiful. The lyrics were perfect. And he sang it all with perfection.

"They don't know about us." He finished the song his eyes still locked with mine. Everyone stood and clapped. Perrie was crying. Cher was smiling with joy.

"Harry Styles, may I just say that's your best performance yet." Cowell said and everyone nodded in agreement. "I want you to sing that song for sectionals. It was beautiful. The lyrics were perfect. Maybe we could make it a duet. That's it we'll make it a duet!" Cowell smiled at his brilliant idea.

Cher smiled. She knew she was getting the duet with Harry, Just like everyone said they get all the due-

"Delany, I want you to sing this with Harry. I loved both of your songs so why not put you guys in a song together. Tonight practice the song and then come back tomorrow with the duet and if it's good enough we will sing it for sectionals on Wednesday. Everyone else during the song will be giving the beats." Cowell said in excitement.

"Harry was this song about anybody?" Cowell asked as he always did after everybody's song.

"Yes." Harry looked at me again.
