Pitch Slapped

Delany was a freshman in high school and orientation was where clubs recruited the 'freshies'. Many clubs asked for her to come join but they all seemed to dorky like the chess club or book club. She didn't want to be a nerd like in middle school. She wanted to stand out, shine. That's when one specific club caught her eye, not just because of the guy recruiting with his brunette curls. Just the idea of it all. Being noticed.

12. Cooler Than Me

"Who's got some song selections for me?" Mr. Cowell said as we all took a seat. Nobody rose there hand, I'm guessing afraid of what he would think. Then, of course, Cher rose her hand.

"Cowell, I have a perfect song for sectionals. Do you mind if I go up and sing it?" Cher smiled cheerfully.

"Sure, why not." He smiled.

"Sarah, James, and Frank, I'm going to need you guys to help out with the beat." She said heading toward the stage and our three beat boxers followed behind her. She grabbed a mic as the other three did too. She whispered to them and they started.

"If I could write you a song to make you fall in love, I would already have you up under my arm, I used up all of my tricks, I hope that you like this." She sang and started walking around the stage. She was good.

"But you probably won't, you think you're cooler than me," She stared directly at Harry and I. Was this song about us? Was she jealous of us? "You've got designer shades just to hide your face in, you wear them around like you're cooler than me. You never say hey or remember my name and it's probably cause you think you're cooler than me." She sang the whole song and nailed every line. When she finished she bowed and everyone clapped.

"Cher, I thought you did good, but I don't think it's good enough for sectionals." Cowell told her.

"Cowell, you've got to be kidding me. That's a great song." Cher told him.

"It is indeed, but I feel like it's been done before. We need something new, something that's never been done. Something the judges won't forget." Cowell told her.

I had a good idea. I rose my hand. "Delany, do you have something to say?" Cowell said to me.

"What are you doing?" Harry whispered.

"Yes, I do. Cher sang great, but like you said you want something new, something to remember. Why don't we just write our own song for sectionals?" I told him.

He stood their for awhile silently thinking about my idea, "Tomorrow report back here with a song you wrote. I want to hear each and everyone's song so be ready." He dismissed us.

"Brilliant idea," Harry smiled. I looked over at Cher as she glared at me. I quickly looked away.
