Chapter 42: free

*Two days later*

‘Ah, ladies. You muz’ be Jenna and Alira.’ A bald head with tiny spikes of hair addressed us with a heavily accented voice.

‘Yes, I’m Alira and this is Jenna.’ I introduced the both of us to him.

‘Yez, yez. I’m Paolo. Yez, I am Italiano but perzonally, I prefer France.’ He shrugs his shoulders.

‘We’ve never been to Italy so we can’t really voice an opinion.’ Jenna laughs nervously and he just chuckled.

‘Okay, I know you guyz are new here. But there’s a band coming for a shoot and you two are my only photographer and stylist here today so you two are going to have to work on the shoot. Iz zat okay?’ He asked us, his eyes burning with desperation.

‘Yes, that’s fine.’ I smiled.

‘I’m cool with it.’ Jenna shrugged with a smile as well.

‘Okay, zat iz good.’ Paolo then snaps his fingers in the air. ‘Lana, go get a camera and teach Alira the basics. Kimmy, go teach Jenna what to do.’ The two girls walked up towards us.

‘Oh, and Jenna? This band has their own stylist sort of, she’ll be bale to help you with the boys.’ He called out.

We were both ushered away in different directions. Lana pulled me towards a studio sort of, with a white screen and camera to choose from. It was a basic magazine studio for people to take photos on.

‘Okay, Alira, right?’ Lana asked and i was surprised to hear an American accent but I nodded anyhow.

‘Alright, this camera is basically your everyday camera. We don’t really mind what kind of shots you do on the boys. You’re allowed to direct them on how to take their shots and all. But the shots need to be shot good, obviously, but by good I mean no red eyes, blurriness and stuff like that.’ She instructed.

‘Blurriness?’ I asked, confused. If a photographer was asked to take photos of course there won’t be anything blurry.

‘You’d be surprised of all the crap photographers we’ve got here.’ She laughed. ‘But i’ve seen some of your shots, I reckon you’d be the best here.’ She grinned at me.

‘Thank you.’ I smiled.

‘I’ll give you a few minutes to practice with that camera. The boys will be here in a few minutes. I think they’re with Jenna now.’ She said, walking away slightly.

‘Alright, thanks Lana.’ I nodded to her.

‘You’re welcome.’ She grinned and walked away.

I took the camera in my hands and smiled at how it felt familiar. I put it towards my eye and took a shot at the corner, having the shadows intricately detailed. I took another shot, just moving it around the room and all. The camera felt great in my hands and I grinned to myself. This will surely be the best job I’ve ever had.

‘Excuse me, are you the photographer?’ A husky british accent asked from behind me. I turned to face the voice and my eyes widened at the person in front of me.

‘Yes, I am.’ I said quietly. Harry’s eyebrows shot up when recognition filled his eyes. He bit his lip nervously as he soon realised what it meant.

‘Ali? You’re our photographer?’ He questioned.

‘Yeah.’ I laughed nervously.

‘This is downright awkward.’ He said, his eyes darting around the room.

‘You got that right.’ I agreed.

‘Hey, Harry. Did you see that stylist? It looked like Jen- oh.’ Louis stopped in his tracks when he saw who he was talking to.

‘It was Jenna, Lou.’ Harry answered him. I looked away from him and turned away.

‘Ali! I didn’t know you worked here.’ I looked up to the voice and everything turned 1000 times more awkwarder.

‘Hey, El.’ I smiled.

I have nothing against Eleanor. She’s a sweetie. We’ve been texting for the past two days and we’ve gotten closer. She still doesn’t know I’m Louis’ ex-girlfriend. I turned to face the other two boys. Harry had shock and surprise written all over his face. Louis looked like he saw Dumbledore and Voldemort laughing together.

‘You work here? I thought you said you just got to Paris when I met you?’ Eleanor asked.

‘I moved to Paris because of this job. I thought I told you that yesterday.’ I told her.

‘You probably did. I can’t seem to remember anything these days.’ She laughed lightly. ‘Did I ever introduce you to my boyfriend?’ She asked, completely oblivious to the fact that I already knew him. I decided to play it fresh, like I’ve never met him before.

‘No, you haven’t.’ I answered.

‘Oh, well then. Ali, this is Louis and Louis this Ali.’ She gestured back and forth.

‘Nice to meet you, Louis.’ I smiled towards him and held out my hand.

‘N-nice to meet you too, Ali.’ He smiled nervously and shook my hand.

‘And who might you be?’ I turned to Harry, acting like I never knew him. I hope he could see in my face to play along.

‘I’m Harry.’ He grinned, showing off his dimples.

‘Nice to meet you, Harry. I’m Ali.’ I smiled.

‘I’m Liam.’ Liam announced as he walked into the room. He did a double take when he saw me but went back to normal once he saw my expression. He smiled at me.

‘I’m Zayn.’ Zayn introduced himself and acted casually as if he never met him.

‘Hi, boys. I’m Ali.’ I smiled.

‘I’m hungry, is there any foo-Ali!’ Niall shouted and I groaned internally. Great, trust Niall to stuff everything up.

‘Hey, Niall.’ I said, deciding to show that I knew him.

‘You’ve met Niall and none of the other boys?’ Eleanor asked, looking between the two of us.

‘I bumped into him at the airport when I first got here.’ I answered quickly before Niall could say anything.

Niall’s eyebrows knitted together in confusion. I bet his mind is going wild because he has no clue what was going on. He looked at me and I silently sent him a message that said play along.

‘Yeah, we just sort of talked at the airport.’ Niall finally agreed with a shrug of his shoulders but I could still see he was confused as hell.

‘Oh, okay.’ Eleanor said. ‘Guys, I gotta go. I’m meeting a friend. Have fun at this shoot.’ She waved goodbye to the boys and walked out.

‘So, can someone tell me why we’re lying to Eleanor about not knowing Ali?’ Niall announced.

‘Isn’t it obvious?’ I pointed out.

‘No?’ He countered.

‘Someone explain to the blond while I set up.’ I sighed as I walked over to set the place up.

‘Niall, she’s obviously lying to her because of dumbass Louis here.’ Zayn explained.

‘Oooooh, i understand now.’ Niall exclaimed. I rolled my eyes at him even though he cant see me.

‘Let’s just get this over and done with.’ Louis grumbled from behind me.

‘Okay, boys. Stand over there and just pose. Act serious.’ I instructed and they did as I told them to. I snapped the picture.

‘Now, smile and act as though you love everything you see.’ They all started to grin, except for Louis who’s smile looked fake.

‘Louis, can you smile for real please?’ I asked him, putting the camera close to my face.

‘I am smiling for real.’ He disclosed.

‘No, you’re not and we all know it. Just be happy, think of something happy.’ I said. He finally did what was told and I smiled happily at how he listened.

‘Now, laugh. You’re all happy and stuff. Laugh.’ I shrugged my shoulders, camera at the ready. Their harmonic laughs rang through out the whole studio and I took a couple of shots, each showing how happy they all looked.

‘Now, rearrange your positions.’ I told them and they did exactly that.

It felt weird to have all this authority but then it felt, i don’t know, right. It was even weirder feeling all their eyes on me. I haven’t talked to the boys in about a month and whilst me and Niall are normal, me and the rest of the boys don’t have the same relationship we did as last time. It went on and on until it came to the individual shots.

‘Alright, who’s individual am I doing first?’ I announced all the boys.

‘Do Louis’ first, just to get that part over and done with.’ Liam suggested and I just nodded, not really paying attention as I fixed the settings on the camera.

Louis stood in the middle and I looked at him, trying to figure out how I’m going to fix his position.

‘Lou, grab that chair and sit on it backwardly.’ I ordered him and he did just that. I went up close and took a photo of him. ‘Smile for this one.’ I said and he smiled, looking right into the camera.

I stepped closer to him, I wasn’t too close but I was close enough to get only his face in the picture. His sky blue eyes looked right into the camera and it was a little mesmerising. I moved all around him, telling him to change positions and emotions and such.

‘Okay, Louis. You’re done. Um, Harry. You’re next.’ I called. Louis stood frozen in front of me and I looked at him a little confused.

‘Louis? I said you’re done?’ I told him and he sort of snapped out of his trance.

‘Oh, I’m sorry.’ He apologised. But his sorry had some sort of double meaning in it. The way his eyes held guilt and sorrow made me think if he meant sorry for what he did to me. His eyes paralysed me, keeping me in the same spot, waiting for an answer.

‘It’s okay.’ I replied and I knew that my words certainly had a double meaning and I hoped he caught on. He smiled at me. His face relaxing and his eyes losing some of the guilt it held, his smile was genuine. I couldn’t help but smile back.

‘Alright, where do I stand?’ Harry asked, ending our little exchange. I turned to Harry.

‘Stand where Louis was.’ I ordered and he did so.

I put the camera to my face ready to take Harry’s shot. I was suddenly completely content. I felt... free. Now, that I know Louis was sorry and now that I know I have forgiven him. I’ve never been so happy. Also, now I know that I have no feelings for him. When he looked at me, I didn’t feel the familiar butterflies in my stomach. I’ve moved on from Louis and so has he. We’re both... free.
