A student's adventure

Uncertainty, and no idea what to expect. That's what runs through most fresh university student's minds whenever they go into their first year, and there's no way of predicting the inevitable whirlwind which is to come.

This is the very situation I find myself in now, and here is a diary about myself going through my very first stages of University, so any of you younger/older readers can get a glimpse of what it must be like. Each chapter will present a new event which I have been through, I hope you enjoy it!

1. Preview!

Ok, so I'm sat here on Friday the 21st of September, currently preparing myself to start my first week of University next week. I've got to admit, I'm feeling nervous. I know there will be many, many people who will be in the same situation as me, but...I'm still in it!

A quick background, I will be studying History in Sheffield, England, over a 3 year course. I'm 19, and after spending 3 years at college, I'm very glad to have made it. I am also the first person from my family to make it into University itself, so I have absolutely no idea what to expect, but from friends it sounds as though it's going to be a very fun roller-coaster ride.

Now, what am I actually nervous of? Well, I guess not knowing entirely where the university is, just where it's supposed to be, is quite nervy. (I know, Open days, but...they're ages ago!) It's actually rather embarrassing, as I've lived in Sheffield for my entire life and I still don't know where it is. Still, it should be fun finding out! I think I'm also nervous about meeting people. I should clarify I will be staying at home during Uni, and there will be people going to the same Uni who don't, who will be much more nervous than me. But for some reason, that makes me more nervous! Hey-ho, I guess I just need to stop worrying and start being excited.

One thing I do know, is that freshers week starts this week. There are a number of societies and groups that you can join, and I'm very excited about them. I've decided, somehow, that badminton is definitely the way to go in terms of Sports clubs. Maybe it's something to do with running around with a racket that's familiar to me. (Awful pun, I'm sorry people.) Something slightly amusing that took me by surprise was the universities dedication to Ultimate Frisbee. Since when was Frisbeeing a sport!? And how is it ultimate!? Is there spikes coming off it in all directions and do you have to catch it with your teeth? I have no idea. Maybe I should try it.

Either way, it all kicks off with an activities fair this Sunday. It's the first event of Freshers week and I've decided I have to go to it. It'll be a lot of fun, and I'm already looking forward to it, I'll be sure to let you all know how it goes!
